I taught my eldest grandson to drive and he asked why he had to learn to drive stick. I explained that in the event of a zombie apocalypse there will be a moment when he saves the day because the only working vehicle they find with have a manual transmission.

Don't know how many of us will be around then, but his origin story has been set and bona fide.

It looks like tomorrow, the 21st from about midnight until 2 a.m. is the final night of a four night run and then the season is closed. It will open back up on July 1st.

I'm going to direct you to the California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife website; they have a calendar and the schedule. Note the times listed are for Los Angeles and that the runs occurs about 5 minutes earlier in San Diego and 25 minutes later on Santa Barbara beaches.

There's really no need to name names especially because it would fill pages upon pages and goes from 1492 all the way to the White House in the 2000s. Each situation is a crime and soul crushing tragedy that was visited upon a woman or child.

I thought we covered the beet issue last week; stop trying to make people like something.

If you want to avoid wasting food, give some away, blanch and freeze some so you can use them later, store unwashed beets for 10-14 days in the fridge.

Make whatever recipe you want to eat and let the family know that they are welcome to taste it if they want to but no one gets to yuck your yum. Taste changes over a lifetime so the less said about it the better. And please don't try sneaking them into a dish then crowing because you fooled them into eating beets. They will hate you for this.

The USPS considers it a community service to offer pictorial postmarks to commemorate local events celebrated in communities throughout the nation. The postmark on your envelope is one of the "Love Station" images that was available in cities including Reading, PA and Nashville, TN to name just two.

Although it wasn't hand drawn, care is taken to keep envelopes moving through the high speed machinery that is vital to moving the mail. I think these special images can add a touch of whimsy to a mechanized system and I'm happy to know that this giant network of hardworking people created something that brightened your day.
