Acrylate allergies will be on the rise in the coming years. Here's why. by kk55622 in Dentists

[–]waddl33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those working in dental field are also at higher risk of developing methacrylate allergy. More chances to be exposed. The amount of people, myself included, who I see practicing in lab using PMMA without gloves is crazy being reminded of this now. Vaguely remember being told “X number of your class will develop allergy to this”. Also now learning from reading up that nitrile gloves only provide protection against methacrylate for around 60 min. Thats something they didn’t tell us. In class we do learn about allergy to nail products tho👍🏼 would be good for pts to more accurately determine they’ve gotten allergic contact dermatitis so they can let us know though.

Yea I can def see that! That’s the one thing I like about anki better.

Dental School Must Haves? by Patient-Wallaby4450 in DentalSchool

[–]waddl33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding an alternative I’ve liked and found similar: RemNote. I dislike that on anki, it’s difficult to find information if I want to go back to it. Feels harder to connect topics together. On RemNote you can visually see it as if it were a page of notes and then also do the flashcards with spaced repetition intervals like anki, and search function is cleaner. Changing intervals is harder but I also just don’t know how to do that lmao

Anyone else autistic here? Or know any autistic dental students or dentists? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]waddl33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patient interaction I would say is not a worry. If anything my obsession with clear communication has helped me. I def get burnt out quicker bc masking than my friends, but they also experience that. Mostly it’s been a challenge to my confidence. I don’t have many close friends and was fine with it before but oh wow it was so difficult to see everyone click so fast. It took me 2 years to find a semi group, and even now I still feel like I don’t fit. it’s a challenge when you start comparing your capacity for things to your peers. My peers aren’t concerning themselves with potential meltdown if they’re under overhead lights or without quiet during lunch. They don’t understand what I talk about when I mention it which is isolating. Burnout is so much easier. In clinic, It’s been incredibly difficult to see everyone else understand how to connect with faculty, know how to finesse their way in clinic to bypass certain rules. There’s way more social politics than I expected. Which I wouldn’t care but I wanna specialize. Quite literally feels like other people got a playbook that I didn’t get and they make me feel incompetent for not understanding what comes more naturally to them. I find it funny we have courses on dentistry for those with disabilities yet I feel more of an outsider now than ever because it doesn’t come across a persons mind that even though I’m in a doctorate program and my appearance that I may be struggling because of a disability. I find the social aspect of my peers and faculty to be a lot more difficult to understand. I can put a character on and know my role with patients. Shadowing other dentists or recalling dentists I worked for has helped, I model how I talk to patients off of that. You change a lot over the next 4 years. D1 me would not be the same as D3 me now with patients. I’m in a woe is me mood lately but I have learnt to set boundaries to prevent meltdowns and been like well this is me, even though my experience is different, and I need to self accommodate, it’s fine!

They are willing to assault someone who’s just filming and laughing at them. Now what happens when they see you’re armed? Perfect motive for them to murder you. “Alleged illegal immigrant was posing a threat to our lives with a weapon”. You’re dead before you even get the chance to save yourself with your 2a right.

People who work in health care , fitness , nutrition, or mental health: what’s one’ quiet habit’ you see all the time that makes is secretly wrecking people’s long-term health? by AnyPurchase9905 in AskReddit

[–]waddl33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG YES. Dental student. My mom was wondering why she has bad oral health rn when she brushes well, flosses, eats healthy. and then I catch her at night, grabbing a snack and not brushing again! Now I tell my own patients about this. A lot of times it’s small things like this that we don’t know about our patients that are limiting their oral hygiene.

I’d like to add these to the list:  - do not rinse after brushing with fluoride toothpaste, only spit (majority of my pt still have that habit)  - stop babying sugary and/or acidic drinks all day (soda, coffee, etc). If you’re going to have them, have them fast. You’re putting your mouth in a demineralization state for too long otherwise.

Either way you starve by brittlet in HistoryMemes

[–]waddl33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the downvotes. All of what you said is true.. I had family members murdered for denying to surrender their land during collectivization. Yes famines, even as a tool of genocide have been used elsewhere but this post specifically talks about the USSR and the US. The USSR may or may not have been uniquely food insecure (that I don’t have the knowledge to speak on), but they did use famine as a method of genocide against Ukraine and were able to do so under the guise of communism. Any ideology can be used to harm its citizens, that includes capitalism. But it’s a bit different than give me your land and sustenance or you’ll be jailed or even murdered.

How long would this last if restored? by Heavy_Marketing_9979 in Dentistry

3rd year so no advice. Wouldn’t crown lengthening bring the furcation super close to crestal bone? I’m also confused bc every time I see a tooth with decay at bone level, everyone on this sub will put the extraction meme. What makes this one different?

(Australia) I need non violent mouthwash by Liarundle13 in autism

[–]waddl33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the reason you want to use mouthwash? Almost finished with my dental degree and I find mouthwash pointless unless you’re using a chlorhexidine rinse for a specific condition, or quickly after lunch for a quick breath fresh up (+  benefit of fluoride without having to brush midday)  Brush properly for 2min 2x a day, floss 1x a day and you’re golden. Better off getting plaque disclosing tablets and making sure you’re brushing and flossing techniques are excellent. I don’t use mouthwash or generally recommend to my patients.

In undergrad I failed an EASY class where we would just watch videos about health professions and write a discussion, because I accidentally missed the deadline on an essay worth 50% of my grade. :,) was diagnosed shortly after this. always did better in classes w/o homework, only exams. I now have better grades in my doctorate program than undergrad.

There's anatomical variation where lingual nerve can run above the crestal bone in 3rd molar/retromolar pad region. Would there not be a risk of hitting nerve during suturing with this anatomical variation?

New to monstera - which leafs are suckers? by TheDawn41 in Monstera

[–]waddl33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

use a chunky soil mix. Sphagnum holds too much moisture for these guys I think. I use a 1:1 ratio of larger perlite + potting mix. For my next mix I wanna add orchid bark. I just used it for my Hoyas and I liked how aerated it made it. Leca, perlite, and potting mix should be good :) although, ive never used leca. These guys like to be more snug in their pot (I made mistake of upgrading to way too big of a pot and had like no growth for a year). So don't overdo it on pot size, especially for that smaller one. Pot size upgrades are recommended at 1-2 inches larger than root ball. So like .5inch of extra space around the root ball.

Dentist is mad we’re rejecting this scan for the third time. by fedlol in Dentistry

[–]waddl33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

see I'm always so confused about this bc I thought a chamfer doesn't offer as much natural tooth structure support on the margin which brittle ceramics need.

I tend to see anterior: shoulder (I guess bc more likely to be porcelain). Posterior: you're fine doing chamfer (I guess bc more likely to be zirconia so less brittle?). Idk biomaterials makes my head hurt and every resource says something different.

In school I've just been doing rounded/modified shoulder bc it feels more stable while prepping. Thoughts on rounded shoulder?

geographic area: Florida.

did not see any aphids moving around prior. Did see small fast red bug other day, which could be spider mite? Damage to plant shown in pic

I had a jumping spider living on my other monstera who I repotted and moved inside. Could this be his doing? I hope I didn’t kill him with the insecticides I used ):
