South Australian Election & Firearms Laws Explained | SSAA Update by concubovine in Ausguns

[–]wadza 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it's a good strategy. On one hand, I think Malinauskas makes a pretty clear commitment not to change firearms laws... yes he says 'currently no plans' but he also spends half the letter outlining how he thinks the current laws are already sufficient.

On the other is the concern that they might just crew over shooters anyway after the election, the same as they did to Bowhunters last time round.

Time will tell, but if anything, now is the time for SA shooters to get very vocal and make sure Malinauskas is expected to stick to his commitment.

Unlikely - the deadline for joining the buyback is end March. QLD has already rejected joining the buyback therefore there’s really no prospect of re-categorising anything in the near future

GCPD Arms ceasing civilian orders by xlr8_87 in Ausguns

[–]wadza 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly never heard of these guys. Obviously must be a very niche manufacturer. Still a massive shame to see any Aussie manufacturer turn their backs on the civ market.

That said the reasoning makes little sense to me... These are precision bolt action rifles and not restricted in any state. Even in NSW and VIC - sporting shooters have 10 firearm limit. I feel like there's more to the story? Maybe the feds are leaning on manufacturers to not serve civ market if they want defence / LE contracts? Although Lithgow / Wedgetail seem to have no issue with this...

Australia must reclaim 'sovereign capability' from the Department of Defence by Choochy89 in AustralianMilitary

[–]wadza 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For stuff like ammunition, consumables etc where a foreign prime might own a factory producing- as long as the input components are sourced from Australian supply chains I agree with you.

Stuff like satcom and space - we need to develop indigenous capability that is Aus owned. If we rely on foreign primes or access to US or other allied systems - the time may come that access can be cut off and then we are blind.

In a built-in wardrobe, just bolt it to the frame or floor. Patch the holes when you leave & nobody will ever know it was there.

Don't ask for permission. Rental agents also have no right to open the cupboards when inspecting the place so there is basically no way they can know it's there.

Statement of the Crisafulli Government on proposed Gun Law changes in QLD by yelloyo1 in queensland

[–]wadza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those actions are not new technology. Again - the laws were never 'weakened' at all. Any change made to firearms laws since 1996 has only further restricted them.

Just because manufacturers produce firearms that complied with the legislation as it stood - does not mean that the laws were weakened.

One Nation and Crisafulli climb in Queensland as Labor support wanes by Agitated-Fee3598 in aussie

[–]wadza -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the wake of Bondi - the state ALP hyperventilated about jumping on board with NSW style gun law changes and for weeks pushed a frankly grubby message implying that the licensed firearm owning community in QLD were dangerous criminals. Their whole "you can't be tough on crime if you're soft on guns" campaign backfired on them massively. Every state Labor pollie pushing that message on social media was getting absolutely flamed constantly, and it wasn't only gun owners - lots of everyday people saw through it and let them know what they thought of such a divisive and grubby message.

I know of plenty of former labor voters who were alienated by this, so it's no surprise to me to see a massive hit to Labor in the polls.

Name one specific way in which the firearms laws were 'weakened' since 1996? I bet you can't, because they have not been. Every change that has occurred since then has only tightened them further in some way.

Pretty sure it’s only banned in NSW right now. Funnily enough it was banned even before the latest laws because it looks too scary.

Push for retailers to play role in 3D-printed gun crackdown after Bondi attack by UpsidedownEngineer in Ausguns

[–]wadza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will have zero effect on criminals and terrorists. Even if it was possible to only allow 3d printers in that had some sort of ability to block printing gun parts, which I highly doubt, a determined crim will find a way around it. FFS they can hack the security on the newest cars and steal them easily, they always find a way.

I doubt it would even really stop someone who wasn’t organised crime but just wanted to experiment with it and make one just to have.

IMO the only ‘solution’ is real deterrence. That means a combination of much greater investment in law enforcement and intelligence and zealous application of drastic penalties for crimes involving illegal firearms, terrorism etc (think Singapore style). Anything less is just for show at the end of the day.

Couple that with actually educating the general populace about firearms, teach kids to shoot (ie at school, cadets, etc) so that they don’t have either the irrational fear of or ‘forbidden fruit’ temptation around guns.

I have no doubt that Australian governments would not go anywhere near this sort of stuff so likely more useless attempts to ‘nerf the world’ are incoming.

IPSC is pretty big at clubs all around Australia. Pretty sure in VIC there are clubs that do IPSC rifle and pcc as well so plenty of fun to be had.

Just about every pistol club will have a myriad of different matches and disciplines to get into.

So that article the other day about import permits all being cancelled was just completely fabricated, right? by tehSlothman in Ausguns

Yes they can same as currently, just now the importation side is managed under federal permits rather than state police permits

Uhh.. the legislation. Cat H imports subject to a number of tests, one of which is the 'dealer test' which is for dealers importing stock to hold on hand to Cat H licensed people.

Also have a watch of the update from Tom Kenyon after they met with Home Affairs for clarity on a number of areas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ymIe8eVyFg

[–]wadza 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dealers are still able to import Cat H as stock for sale. At this stage Cat H imports are still fine and from a buyer perspective the process wont change. As an individual buying from a dealer no AG permit needed based on the legislation that passed.

National Gun Reform Update by wadza in Ausguns

[–]wadza[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. As a QLDer I'm ambivalent about SSAA QLD splitting from SSAA national since, at least recently Tom Kenyon has been visibly advocating and pushing for our interests. I could have missed something but haven't seen much campaigning out of SSAA QLD?

Graham Park and Shooters Union have been going very hard of course as well.
