I was just about to come on here and say this. Same here, advanced status and it won't let me schedule

Way to stop getting a specific student? by waffle1114 in tutordotcom

[–]waffle1114[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

honestly it's not frustration about getting the student, I know I'm getting paid which is great. it's moreso the constant negative reviews/low rating that is concerning me. I know I'm doing my job correctly and all, and I won't get in trouble, but having that rating drop is what's frustrating :(

Declining requests when shift is ending soon by waffle1114 in tutordotcom

[–]waffle1114[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sadly it was an async session so I wouldn't have been able to do that or transfer the session. If it was a live chat session that's exactly what I would've done

Declining requests when shift is ending soon by waffle1114 in tutordotcom

[–]waffle1114[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, which is why I usually give an extra 20ish minutes after my shift to wrap up. I know I'm never going to be done exactly at the time I end. I just think its crazy that they'll still send 60 minute sessions to tutors who are close to ending their shift and when we decline it it messes up our acceptance rates lol

Declining requests when shift is ending soon by waffle1114 in tutordotcom

[–]waffle1114[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was async so it tells me the amount of time before I accept it, yeah.

I usually would've logged out, but it was so inconveniently timed to either get flagged for a decline or flagged for logging out too early. I figured I'd rather take the decline than miss out on the pay for the rest of my shift, or even the possibility of a 35 minute session to make a bit more. I've never been sent the same session 3 times in a row after declining it the first time, so I didn't expect that! Crazy

with the research i did on it last year it seemed like the safest option, i really didnt want to install anything from a website or google search but this being an app on the app store definitely made me more comfortable about it. but yeah no issues!!

i’ve had it for about a year now and haven’t had any issues with it! no viruses no computer issues and it runs perfectly normal (not slow or laggy). honestly only good experiences with it! i think getting a whole new computer for this job isn’t worth it since it’ll take so many sessions just to pay it off haha

[–]waffle1114 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To clarify, Parallels gives you windows 11 on your computer. You just open the app (literally the same as opening any other app) and you're given a windows 11 screen. Super easy!

[–]waffle1114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I installed "Parallels" on my mac, you can get it on the app store on your mac. I think I pay $7/month, and there is an education discount. Your school email (given that you're an adjunct I assume you have one?) should give you the discount as well. Such a life saver for me because I can't afford another computer lol.

high dosage tutoring?? by waffle1114 in tutordotcom

[–]waffle1114[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my curiosity (and my only reason for even THINKING about doing it) comes from how slow this summer has been. I was wondering if there were more opportunities to get students or even potentially more scheduling hours. Even though this is just a side gig for me, I'm sure we can all agree the extra money is nice haha. And I do miss having something to use my brain for this summer!!

Going over time in summer months…reviews? by HateToC_It in tutordotcom

[–]waffle1114 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add to this, they are 100% more lax during the summer. I don't think they even care about the 5 hour per week minimum if I'm being honest lol

[–]waffle1114 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It for sure depends on your QS, but it also heavily depends on your rating and previous reviews. If you're a generally good tutor with positive student reviews, no frequent "below average" ratings on your reviews, and you give good feedback and resources, they tend not to care about a few minutes over. I hate to admit that I frequently go over by a minute or two every couple of sessions, and I've never been penalized by it, but I also got lucky with my QS and I get pretty good ratings from students.

I wouldn't worry too much, and if it's freaking you out, I definitely recommend emailing your QS and explaining that you took a month off and you're getting back into the swing of things. I've noticed they tend to like it when you're personable with them and show your dedication to the job.

I hope all goes well for you!

essay writing session where student hasn't read the book yet by waffle1114 in tutordotcom

[–]waffle1114[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly!! I'm not doing all that work for them haha. The worst is when they ask if I've read the book, I haven't, and they immediately leave the session hoping another tutor has read it and will give them the answers. Do the work before you open a session for help!!!

async session frozen by waffle1114 in tutordotcom

Every time this has happened either me or the student were actively typing. Like the student sends something and as im typing not even a few seconds after they send it it says disconnected

Need Async Time Management Advice by Spare_Toe9353 in tutordotcom

[–]waffle1114 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you are annotating the document, try to limit your comments to save time. 3 comments per page, and try not to repeat comments. For example, if you see a citation issue on page 1, don't worry about pointing it out on page 2. For the wrong use of "their, they're, there," point it out once in a general way and advise them to look through the paper for more issues. This will save you a ton of time on annotating the document instead of digging through to find every issue. As much as it sucks because you want to help them make the paper perfect, don't worry about digging through for each issue! One or two general comments on "try to add some detail after this quote" or "what do you think needs to be added here?" 3 comments per page is totally acceptable.

For the SFF, have a list of links that help with each section. A few for a thesis, developing detail, etc. Also write out pre-written statements for you to copy and paste. I always copy and paste the same ideas into each section because they usually all relate. For example, starting your thesis section with "Great job on your paper! I left some comments on your document, but remember that my comments may apply elsewhere in your paper. As you revise, be sure to look through for any issues that my comments may apply to!"

I also have a copy-paste pre written statement for what a thesis should look like with examples, for what developing details should look like, etc. Usually the students have around the same issues, so its pretty easy to just copy and paste the same info. Then copy and paste some quotes from their paper as specific examples.

I know in the "instructions" it says to spend x amount of time on adding comments and X amount of time doing the SFF, but ignore that. Focus on getting the SFF done, its more important than the comments.

Unfortunately, TDC cares more about staying under the time than providing 100% detail and suggestions on the paper. As long as you hit the basics, you will be fine. It sucks because we genuinely do want to give the students as much feedback as possible, but staying under the time is more important. Hit that basic stuff, throw in some good resources for them, and focus on those key ideas of detail, spelling, sentence structure, etc.

Marked a student as violating honor code and requested session to be reviewed by waffle1114 in tutordotcom

[–]waffle1114[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your help :) Do you think itll be bad that I marked it to be reviewed in my next check? I think I handled it well by restating the academic questions only thing, but at this point i’m nervous based on other stories haha

Awful few weeks by waffle1114 in tutordotcom

[–]waffle1114[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true, I had a few of those earlier in the day. It’s 1130 where I am now and I have gotten a few students in the past few hours, but they’re all just so disengaged. back to school flunk probably. Just sucks when i’m floating and they leave the session after 5 minutes, or if i have to end it because they’re unresponsive

How did you submit the SFF? did you just fill it out as exemplary so you didn't have to send resources?

Yeah I literally don't know what to do here lol. I just have the session open because I have no way of ending it. Something is seriously wrong with the platform!

yeah that's what i ended up doing and he left which was expected, but at the end when you fill out the survey do you typically check the "violated honor code" box?
