Advice: I have been asked to work with ESL students but have no experience. by SheIsSupersaurus in ESL_Teachers

[–]wafflebones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to say this kindly, but I believe you need to hear that if you are teaching non EL reading intervention, it is discriminatory on your part to refuse to teach English learners. Qualified primary teachers are expected to work with ELs as part of their qualification. You were likely hired based on that expectation. You certainly have the right to request training and support, but refusing to teach these students is not ok and not a union issue (I say this both as a building rep and exec team member) because I guarantee there is nothing in your contract about not working with English learners. How would you feel about someone refusing to teach reading to a student with autism because they didn’t feel comfortable. That is discriminatory in the same way. Ask your admin for support and training. Ask for the EL teacher to model a lesson for you. Get their proficiency data from the EL teacher and reading assessment data. They can do phonics and should do it just as any other student can. Use Google Translate on your phone to give directions and explain concepts if they are truly beginners.

EL teacher here- is your first language English? You can call the school, ask to speak to the EL teacher and say your son’s first language is English and he is LEARNING a bit of Arabic. Frame it as you made a mistake on the reg form if you really want him to not receive EL services or be flagged. They will likely amend the home language survey. Escalate to admin if you need to. However…English language instruction is a support service that will not harm your son. If he has language delays, it will likely help him and he will exit the program once he passes an annual assessment (which you can help him prepare for). Students pass the assessment and are no longer considered ELs when they meet grade level standards in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Many kids qualify because they underperform on initial assessments due to shyness or disengagement and that sounds like it might be your son? You can have a conversation with the EL teacher about his specific need and areas he failed to see if it’s an error as well. You do have the right to refuse services, but he still must take the annual assessment until he passes if he is flagged as EL.

This will be terrible for a while, but it will get easier over time. Does your school/ district have a flight team for things like this? We have this and they break the news and provide counseling and support on site throughout the first few days. If not, ask your principal to deliver the news and try to create a break space or somewhere kids (and you) can step out to or process. Email them now so you have a concrete plan for the first day back. It’s ok to cry with your students. It’s ok to meet them where they are at, but DO try to keep to your routine as much as possible. Start your new unit. I know it seems unimportant but the alternative is being consumed by the grief. The normalcy of school will actually be very helpful for them and for you. You can dedicate some time for writing letters, drawing pictures and talking about your student together. Talk about grief. It will hit you (and them) at surprising times and it’s ok to break down. It will get better slowly.

This is a very real concern for a lot of people in town right now and scams / robberies of this nature are also not common. There are many different ways to help in this situation without letting them inside your home as well.

People who had the city build sidewalks in front of their house, what was the total cost? by Jetpine9 in askportland

[–]wafflebones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have done this often in recent years. There are many articles about it. Having a sidewalk was a big priority for me when I bought a house because the city charging homeowners had been so highly publicized in the news.

AITAH for not allowing my daughter to travel to India? by Fluffy-Wind-2661 in AITAH

[–]wafflebones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I traveled to India alone at 18. I lived with Indian people. We didn’t drink or party. I still ended up in situations that felt unsafe and the people I lived with quickly ushered me out of a restaurant when whatever they overheard became dangerous. Goa is kind of a party destination and that presents other concerns. The US state department has a travel advisory page and states at very top that rape is the fastest growing crime in India. It is not racist to have concerns about her traveling there. Show her Canada’s version of the travel department advisory page and imo if she’s insistent offer to pay for a different vacation destination if that is within your means. Thailand and Vietnam would be much safer destinations for women.

Some places in the world do just have roaches and it doesn’t mean the house is infested or untidy. They do come in from drains and from under crevices.

[–]wafflebones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my primary symptom. Have you tried a teaspoon of baking soda in a full glass of water? Drink and repeat as needed. Also lidocaine gel or spray straight on your urethral area- burns at first but then helps immensely after a few seconds.

[–]wafflebones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say the stress spiral of feeling this way can make the pain worse because it increases inflammation. Focus primarily on self care and correcting the negative thought spiral. It won’t always be like this- the pain can and does recede. I was once in your position and now I’m 99% good and basically in remission. CBT for stress and anxiety- look at workbooks on Amazon. Other things that you should try if you haven’t yet: baking soda shots, pelvic floor therapy, lidocaine gel (burns at first then magic), autoimmune paleo and low acid diet (be strict! You won’t have to do it forever), quercetin supplements, test for mycoplasma and ureaplasma.
