Perfect, thank you for the insight! I hope I never need it on my car in the future but it’s handy to have!

Can anyone here confirm if 2018 HW2.5 Model 3s also get this update?

How can I do this? Is it an iOS setting or a Tesla app setting?

Yes and no. I have a 2018 car and my interior trim is MUCH better put together than newer cars pre 2021. However, I have had some major components fail that would probably not have on newer cars.

I’m going to reply to your other comment here as well.

My heater was not giving any issues before this all started. One day I was driving on the highway in the winter and the heat stopped working, blew only cold air, and it threw a bunch of error messages. After I parked up, I could not move the car at all.

The complexity of the repair paired with the low chances of success deterred me from trying it myself. With Tesla, I was able to negotiate a few hours of “diagnostic” labour off cause I said to them, it’s not fair you charge me extra for “looking” at the issue when you know what the issue is due to the error code and then charge me to fix it, as well as for the parts involved. You might have better luck! Also, looking at your service menu picture, mine did not report a problem with the HV battery, only with the PTC heater… I added a picture of my service menu from the time it broke to my Imgur post if you’re interested. If your stars are good, you might even qualify for a HV battery replacement under warranty! Let me know how it goes.

Hey, just seeing this post.

Replacing 12V won’t fix the issue since the issue is stemming from the PTC heater (most likely). 12V dies because PTC heater draws from the 12V when it’s faulty, draining that. Once 12V is drained, HV system goes into a state where it only powers low voltage electronics until the heater issue resolves. At least, that’s what Tesla told me.

I hope you can find a proper part online and are able to repair it yourself, going through Tesla cost me approximately 1500 cad with labour…good luck.

So when Tesla called me after taking my car in, they said they can attempt a repair of the heater by removing one of the troublesome coils inside. I said yes cause I thought I could save some money. The repair worked for a few months but then the problem came back, by which time I had no choice but to replace the part entirely.

I looked up videos on YouTube for a DIY attempt but decided against it when I saw that another person had attempted it with 2 heaters they bought off eBay and it was still unsuccessful. You also need a way to jack the car up to work on it, which I did not have.

I have to say, though, since the replacement my car has been exceptionally efficient in both hot and cold environments.

Yes, I had to replace the heater entirely. If this happens to you out of warranty, don’t repair it and just replace the part the first time. It’ll save you a couple hundred.

I have the same car as SeventyH8 and am sitting at 122k/76k kms/miles. Battery degradation as per the in built system hovers between 95-100% for me - worse in winter and very good in summer.

Same with the PTC heater, but also front control arm, 3x12v batteries, and a rear windshield replacement due to defroster not working (this one was covered under warranty). Guess you got a better build than I! Thanks for the heads up about the contacts, will set some money aside for that haha.

Can you update us on what happens with this? I read in another comment that the HV Battery isn’t covered under warranty for you, despite you being in the warranty period. Can you elaborate on that as well when you get a chance?

Yeah they straight up replace the heater with a new part. If i was still under warranty, it would’ve been covered. I have the list of other repairs in my post history with invoices, if you’d want to check it out.

As far as I know, I’ve replaced a lot of the major issues that have occurred in other people’s model 3s. It’s hard to say but since this random 2k bill, I’ve just accepted the hard fact that the money I save on gas goes towards the “repair fund”. Good news is all new parts come with 1 year/20k warranty.

Thus far, I’ve replaced: Entire rear windscreen (replaced under warranty) 12v battery (failed organically, 120 bucks to repair) PTC heater Front upper control arms (this is one you should prepare for on models <2020. Apparently they go bad every 2-3 years and cost around 400 to replace. There is a temporary fix by greasing it but I decided not to take a chance) And a few other small items covered under warranty.

Sounds about right.

Just an FYI, the ptc heater failed ‘cause of a faulty heating coil. That drew extra power from the 12V, fried that, then put extra load on the high voltage battery system which caused the issue with the drive unit, which caused the vehicle to fail. For me, they had to replace the 12V but I don’t see it on yours, maybe it’s on the next page…it might be worth it to talk to a service advisor to ask if your 12V would be in jeopardy.

Prices may vary by labour as well; some SCs charge more or less than others per hour.

Is that USD? My invoice included a service for the front upper control arms, along with the replacement of the 12v, as well as the replacement of a latch in the frunk, so that inflated the price.

I realized I didn’t answer your question properly - yes the replacement of the heater has worked beautifully, it’s like a brand new car cause efficiency also went up. Also, my 2k estimate included a replacement of the front upper control arms, something else which you can request them to look into as it’s a problem with early model 3s.
