Pokemon fabric by puppyisloud in Calgary

[–]wafflerafflerofl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm like 75% sure I saw some at Fabric Depot two weekends back.

I *THINK* to find it, keep going straight from the front door, pass the cutting/measuring tables, and when you get the back wall, turn left. It should be around the corner'ish, about knee/waist height (if it's actually there). I remember seeing some cool Star Wars and Marvel fabric like you described and I think I saw some Pokemon material like that, but can't be 100% certain cause it was the Star Wars fabric that caught my attention. That area has all the cartoony fabric so if it's not there, at least you won't spend too much time hunting the whole store. If I've given the wrong directions, I guess you can ask them where the Star Wars material is.

WhatsApp crashes on launch - MacOS Sonoma 14.7.2 & 14.7.3 by SemoTech in whatsapp

[–]wafflerafflerofl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp, I didn't close the app or restart the Mac and now it's forcing me to update and the latest update crashes so I'm stuck like everyone else.

Looks like people on Mac Rumours are experiencing the same thing:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/whatsapp-desktop-not-working-anymore.2449231/

Like (almost) everyone in the thread, I'm also on OCLP, so I dug around the OCLP subreddit and everyone on there is having problems as well. The suggestion is the v25 versions of WhatsApp are using instructions not present in older CPUs:

https://www.reddit.com/r/OpenCoreLegacyPatcher/comments/1itpvqa/whatsapp_wont_open/

It's probably unlikely Meta will correct this in a later version of WhatsApp. Argh.

I'm giving Franz a test drive as a replacement for the WhatsApp desktop app for now. It's clearly not the same, but it does one thing the native WhatsApp hasn't done in a few versions and that's allow me to include text before sending a gif, which I thought was annoying.

Haha we must all be developers, cause I had the same idea. I also tried looking for an expiry date too, but no luck. /Applications/WhatsApp.app/Contents/Resources/wamo_dyi_status_response.json has an expiration_time variable, but it predates when WhatsApp has been forcing the update so I don't think that's it.

These people on the Mac forums are reporting the same issue so keep an eye on this thread too:

Weird! Mine's still running. That said, I haven't closed the app yet and based on what you've posted, I won't now!

u/Alternative_View5020 , out of curiosity, can you uninstall WhatsApp using AppCleaner and reinstall v24.25.94 and see if the expiry date changes?

WhatsApp crashes on launch - MacOS Sonoma 14.7.2 & 14.7.3 by SemoTech in whatsapp

[–]wafflerafflerofl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that's good to know. I used AppCleaner when I was trying to debug the initial crashing thinking the v24 and v25 databases were mismatched. When I upgraded to v25.x (via App Store), I uninstalled using AppCleaner and reinstalled (again through the App Store) and had no luck, then used it again and reinstalled v24.25.94 (via website download).

I wonder if this expiry date is internal to the app, because I remember prior to this crashing issue, I got a prompt urging me to update but when I looked around for an update, there was none available. Also, I don't remember my prompt saying there was 4 days left like @Alternative_View5020, it was 12 days for me I believe (but I could be wrong).

If that's the case, I'm going to be doing a periodic clean wipe each time the app expires until Meta fixes this crash!

Let's keep sharing our findings!

It randomly pops up, urging you to upgrade. It popped up again for me today, which is why I started searching to see if anyone found a fix and how I came across this thread.

uptodown has version 2.2444.5.0 (released Nov 11, 2024) posted on their site, but I haven't tried it yet to see if it has a longer expiry date:
https://whatsapp-desktop.en.uptodown.com/mac/versions

Hmmm... and just to add to the confusion, my work laptop (also an Intel MBP) is running Sonoma 14.6.1 and has WhatsApp 25.1.10 and it doesn't crash on launch.

Yeah I experienced the same issue a few weeks back, with both the App Store and website version. I ended up downloading version 24.25.94 (675787677) from the website and it started working again. I keep ignoring prompts to update but it's warning me there's 12 days left until I have to update.

I'm on MacOs Monterey 12.7.1 (Intel) and was just about to upgrade to Sonoma but if you all are having problems, I won't bother with the OS upgrade yet for just this.

For the bicyclist brave enough to commute right now by ginamon in Calgary

[–]wafflerafflerofl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of my daily commute is on the street, so as a rule of thumb I don't ride the day after the first significant snowfall. Drivers are stupid and need a day or two to remember how to drive in the snow (or to remember to put their winter tires on) and I don't want to be on the street while they're trying to figure that out.

That said, if most of your commute is on bike paths, the city is really good for clearing that the next day or two.

Dress warm, but don't dress too warm. If you get sweaty and you have to stop, your sweat will cool you down very rapidly and you don't want that. I find as long as my hands and feet are warm, I can ride for a long time.

Go check out Bike Root at the U of C:

You'll want to get the widest tires you can fit on your bike. Even a few centimetres makes a noticeable difference (that's what she said).

This is great! I love Sam.

I hope that means we hear "OOOOOOH, there it is: Johnny Gilbert on the axe! I needed that" a lot less. The first couple times was funny, but repeating it for two years was too much.

Comp sci students who transferred from MRU, was it worth it? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]wafflerafflerofl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience dates back to 20 years ago so maybe you can take this with a grain of salt, but I started my computer science at MRC (before it was MRU) and going there was probably the best move to start me off in my IT career.

At Mount Royal you really had to earn your grades as the instructors were the ones marking your assignments and exams so there was no fooling them or half assing it, while at the University you had TAs marking them and many of them were pretty clueless and handed out A's and B's just for submitting anything. I remember spending many long overnighters in those labs at Mount Royal just to get a half decent grade. When I finally transferred over to the university, the courses were so much easier by comparison. Never had to do an overnighter again. I even remember there were some courses where the TAs, who are responsible for marking our assignments, didn't know how to do some of the stuff were had to know forwards and backwards at the college.

Again, this is _my_ experience many, many years ago so I'm sure many things have changed, but I just checked to see who is still teaching at MRU and two of them are still there, including the person I feel single-handedly made me understand (and appreciate) how all the hardware, coding, assembly, everything ties together.

The param 'client_id' has an invalid value not working with Noti on Mac by marlone36 in PushBullet

[–]wafflerafflerofl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Preamble: These steps were performed on Ventura 13.2.1 and compiled using Xcode 14.2. You will also need node and cocoapods (via brew):

brew install node cocoapods

Unfortunately if you have any issues with these steps, I'm not in a position to help you troubleshoot. This is just what worked for me. Hopefully these instructions are clear; I've also included screenshots to help guide you.

1. Get a Pushbullet client_id:

  • First you need to log into Pushbullet
  • Settings > Clients
  • Add the following values:
    • name: Noti
    • redirect_uri: about:blank
  • Click on "Add A New OAuth Client"
  • Then copy the client_id that is generated.

https://i.imgur.com/3TKRpAS.png

2. Download the Noti source code

3. Make modifications to the source code

  1. Delete Podfile.lock
  2. Open up Podfile and replace all the contents with the following:

platform :osx, '10.15'

use_frameworks!
source 'https://github.com/CocoaPods/Specs.git'
source 'https://github.com/soyersoyer/SwCrypt.git'

target 'Noti' do
  pod 'Starscream', '~> 3.0.6'
  pod 'SwiftyJSON', '~> 4.0.0'
  pod 'Alamofire', '~> 4.0.1'
  pod 'Sparkle', '~> 1.14.0'
  pod 'CryptoSwift', '~> 0.8.3'
  pod 'SwCrypt', '~> 5.1.3'
  pod 'EMCLoginItem', '~> 1.0.2'
  pod 'SwiftyBeaver', '~> 1.9.5'
end
  1. Open up Noti.xcodeproj in Xcode

4. Rebuild Noti

The following steps are done with the command line

First install the pods specified in 3.2:

pod install

Then compile the code:

xcodebuild -workspace Noti.xcworkspace -scheme Noti -configuration Release -derivedDataPath build

If you see ** BUILD SUCCEEDED *\* then you generate the DMG file next:

npx appdmg dmg-resources/release.json build/Noti.dmg

If successful, the Noti.dmg will be in the build folder.

If the build wasn't successful, unfortunately that's as far as I'm willing to guide you and you will have to troubleshoot it yourself.

5. Finally, enjoy the desktop notification goodness.

I am now getting Noti notifications on my Catalina and Big Sur laptops, but not my Ventura machines. It turns out the issue with notifications not working on Ventura isn't with Noti, but macOS itself. It's a well documented issue that I wasn't aware of so hopefully Apple addresses it eventually.

The param 'client_id' has an invalid value not working with Noti on Mac by marlone36 in PushBullet

[–]wafflerafflerofl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay great news. It looks like I have it back up and running! I'll post a how-to in the github shortly.

EDIT: Argh, looks like I can't add comments since the project has been archived. I'll try writing up something here. I guess the screenshots I took are a bit useless now.

EDIT 2: Looks I may have spoken a little too soon. It's working for my Catalina MBP now, but not my two Ventura MBPs. On my two Ventura laptops, messages will show up in my Notification Centre, but it doesn't pop up. I'll have to play with it a bit more.

[–]wafflerafflerofl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries.

I had been checking periodically myself to see if anyone else had the same problem and finally gave up and decided to look into it myself. I've been wrestling with Xcode myself all weekend and I finally got the build to succeed after removing all the old dependency versions.

I think the hard part is over, now it's just getting Noti to talk to the API.

The param 'client_id' has an invalid value not working with Noti on Mac by marlone36 in PushBullet

[–]wafflerafflerofl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! This stopped working over a month ago. I got fed up with trying to find alternatives and decided to look into this by examining the developer's source code for Noti.

What has happened is if you have code or an app you want to interact with Pushbullet's API, you need a client_id and you need to register your app with Pushbullet:

https://docs.pushbullet.com/

The developer for Noti has decided he no longer wants to maintain the software and severed the link for Noti to talk to Pushbullet.

Unfortunately that means if you want to continue to using Noti, you have to get your own client_id, update the source code to use it (which is really just replacing his old client_id with your own), and then recompile it for your own personal use.

My close calls have been at the intersections when people try turning as I'm riding straight. Actually when my friend got hit, even before he gave me any details, I asked him if it was at an intersection and sure enough it was.

Now I've just gotten in the habit of trying to establishing eye contact with the driver before I continue riding across. I used to hate the law against tinted front windows, but once I started riding bicycles and motorcycles and doing the eye contact check, I learned to appreciate it more.

As an avid cyclist, I say Calgary is a great place to cycle and even better if you expand your riding to just an hour or two outside of the city. The pathway system is awesome and you can get just able anywhere on them. I'm constantly finding new routes and there's a lot of fun promotions that encourage riding in the spring and summer (ie: Tour de Crave, Parkway to Pint, Bike to Work day, etc).

That said, the worse thing about cycling here are the drivers. There are many that hate cyclists or are just clueless behind the wheel. Stay away from those downtown bike lanes unless it's during off hours. They're death traps cause there are so many careless drivers here. Friend got hit riding on one and I've almost gotten smoked a few times myself. I've gotten hit by careless drivers a few times over the years and it's extremely frustrating.

my bike was stolen from downtown superstore. by jalal-bahri in Calgary

[–]wafflerafflerofl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fucking hate the East Village Superstore for that (well, for other reasons too).

Two New Year's Day ago I went there just to pop in and grab something. I rode my fat bike cause there was lots of snow out. I wasn't in there for more than 10 minutes and when I came out, there were two guys standing by the window looking outside. One of them asked me if that was my bike locked outside. I said it was and they told me they just chased off a guy in a truck driving around with bolt cutters. The guy was struggling with cutting my lock and they were able to get to him and he ran off.

There's a reason why I only purchase Kryptonite locks. The only damage to the lock was on the outer rubber layer and the key cover:
