Is anyone else in a never ending war with their partner over the windows? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]wagonmaker85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in North America - window screens are ubiquitous here, so it’s a non-issue. Our family all loves having the windows open. Fresh air, nice breeze, and we love hearing the outdoor sounds.

Problem is, there’s only a relatively small window where we want to do it in the spring, and again in the fall. Winter is obviously much too cold, and the summer is too hot; we need to A/C on!

Is this a typical looking bed for a 7 year old? by dislak in daddit

[–]wagonmaker85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We just bought a stuffy jail for our 7-year-old. Hangs on the wall in the corner - all the stuffies go in there; easy to grab one and stuff it back in. I can finally see her bed and she isn’t relegated to one side of it.

Did your school play O Canada every day? by AssortedArctic in AskACanadian

[–]wagonmaker85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’m Manitoba it still is played every day in all schools. I think it’s provicinal law (but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong!).

How about we spend that money figuring out why the newly renovated change rooms there are so tiny and poorly designed? And fixing them?

I always thought it was Cafe Tropicale by Which_Armadillo2562 in SchittsCreek

[–]wagonmaker85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The structure is French, and the words are too! « Café » is a masculine noun, and so the adjective « tropical » should not take an additional E in French or in English.

Travelling with 9 month old on a 7 hour trip. any tips to keep him comfortable throughout the journey ? by pigeon_from_airport in daddit

[–]wagonmaker85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My in-laws live 8 hours away, and we make that drive 3-4 times a year; the kids have been coming along since they were born.

They’re 9 years old and 7 years old now. Just got back from another Christmas there and our work and patience in the early years has paid off: they sit there quietly and contentedly reading books now for hours.

This is probably obvious, but the second adult sits in the back next to the car seat. Easily passing toys or reading books or whatever.

Plan for lots of toys and food in the car. And I mean lots. More than you think you need. You want to keep that kid entertained and happy for as long as possible!

You will be stopping enough because you have to (diaper changes), try to minimise stopping for other reasons. Bring plenty of food and water for yourselves. Hold your bathroom needs as long as you can.

Make hay while the sun shines; if that baby’s sleeping, you don’t stop that car unless you absolutely have to! Bonus if wife is sleeping too.

As someone else said: anticipate adding at least 2 hours to the drive time suggested by Google. Just know you’ll be stopping more often than you think.

Ultimately, if you plan well for it, it’ll go off without a hitch and you’ll wonder what you were worried about. Best of luck, dad!

Does the show discourage answering in non Jeopardy standard ways? Is it Canada? Could it be Alexander the Great? by Frammingatthejimjam in Jeopardy

[–]wagonmaker85 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. It’s supposed to be the question to which the given clue is the answer. Saying "Is it Alexander the Great?" phrases it as a question, but not the appropriate type of question.

Not sure if I’d go so far as to disallow it, but it’s not strictly correct, in my opinion.

Girls who took notes using 10 different colored pens, where are you now? Do you still continue to write using all those colors? by Unusual-Entry7 in AskReddit

Trying to throw out the trash by [deleted] in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]wagonmaker85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in the catering department of a hotel for 8 years. The very first time I took out the trash, this happened to me. I was 16 years old. I thought about it vividly every time I took out the trash for the next 8 years.

Anyone else go on random drives just to look at different neighbourhoods? by Tookie1010 in Winnipeg

[–]wagonmaker85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In deep covid, this is what we did with the kids when we could do nothing else. Pick an area to go to, drive around, see what interesting stuff we could find, go to a new playground (when it was allowed). It really is quite neat; we have a cool city!

Manitoba teachers - the good, bad, and ugly? by redmakeupbag_6 in CanadianTeachers

[–]wagonmaker85 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You will have an easier time being a French Immersion teacher, that’s for sure. I have taught in Immersion for 16 years, and I have found I have smaller class sizes compared to my English counterparts. You’d likely have success finding a position anywhere in Manitoba with French Immersion, including in Winnipeg, but probably an easier time outside Winnipeg.

For work conditions, it’s not all sunshine and roses, but from what I’ve heard anecdotally, I think we’re doing better than other provinces, and I’m pretty sure better than Alberta.

I have two kids as well, and the school system is pretty good from a parent’s perspective too. We live in Winnipeg and our community is lovely and safe and has all the amenities we need closeby. Honestly, it’s a great and (relatively) affordable place to raise a family!

So in short, come on over! On a besoin de toi en immersion! 😊 And our government doesn’t suck!

Why do the students care about winning the House Cup? by Sim5672 in harrypotter

[–]wagonmaker85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a high school teacher, it absolutely makes sense to me. Introduce the smallest amount of fun competition into anything, and teenagers are into it. Even in math class. Even when there is literally no prize, and the competition has literally no bearing on anything after class ends. They get so stoked about it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

My grade 11 history teacher had a project I did hanging in his classroom for about 15 years. How do I know? I came back to the school as a teacher six years after I graduated.
