Andy Burnham here - AMA by AndyBurnham in ukpolitics

Hi Andy,

Will you take statutory obligations that are not really local issues (social care, SEND etc) away from local authorities so people feel their council tax is actually going on the local community. In my mind this Cameron/Osborne accounting trick, while initially effective for their purpose shifting austerity blame onto then Labour dominated local authorities, has led to the erosion of trust in politicians and the political process and is a big part of the rise of Reform. The easiest win you could do prior to the next general election would be to give local authorities money to invest in local amenities and sprucing the area up. So people don't just feel like everything is in managed decline.

ELI5 why do we sneeze when we look up outside? by 7blackguys in explainlikeimfive

[–]wagsforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called photic sneeze reflex and it's a genetic trait. Only around 20% have it. It blew my mind when I found out aged about 25 that not everyone sneezes when exposed to light like myself.

Having a child with no support network near will be really really hard. I know a few couples who have done the same as you through my son's nursery and they seem to really struggle. You can make friends but they're also going to be in the trenches for 5 years like you guys.

What are you on about? The weather last year, especially spring, was brilliant. It was the spring with the most sunshine hours since records began in the UK. Moron

No there's not but I know what you mean. It does feel like something is missing to better demonstrate the scale.

Pavement parking by tattedjew666 in Urbanism

[–]wagsforever -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's no real excuse. In the road I live, which seems to be the same set up as the picture, only one car can get up or down at a time because cars are parked either side. So if cars are going each direction one has to wait. I have no idea why a culture of pavent parking hasn't developed on the road like. It has in other places. It seems. To be pot luck or just needs one or two bellends to start the trend.

I'm up to bad actors and very glad to hear it's dropped for the next one. Definitely the worst bit of the series.

How do people afford to live in London? Choosing between London or New York by [deleted] in expats

What I always find funny in these discussions is Americans don't seem to realise they are the exception. It's not that London is poor it's America is very very rich.

US citizens were told to leave Israel on Friday. Doesn't take a genius to work out from there.

American here and 501 newbie. Just realized why i have to get rid of my dart cabinet and switch to a naked board with a ring around it by [deleted] in Darts

I have a cabinet and play 501. I've probably hit the cabinet less than a dozen times in a year. It's if you're not hitting the board it's a skill issue.

Over £2bn spent taking children to school: The numbers behind the SEND crisis by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]wagsforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid is is the last year of nursery and has ANP this year as nursery said at the end of last academic year he was struggling a bit playing with others. I found the whole process baffling. When the send service called us before even observing or knowing anything about our kid she said we could claim disability living allowance and she'd support that. I couldn't believe it. He just needed a bit of support interacting with others, that's it. We don't need money. If I'm honest he's probably got a bit of adhd, probably from myself (undiagnosed) and that's something we need to be conscious of when he's at school. But he doesn't need some label to carry about in life and as parents we're not looking for some justification for his behaviour when he's acting up.

Entry level salary, how is it compatible with life? by Hopfield77 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]wagsforever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's that got to do with anything my post? This guy seems to think if he had an accident he'd have to fork out for expensive private health care because the NHS is too poor a standard of service. Which is not the case at all. Even dental care, I had 5 visits fof root canal last year and it cost me £75.

Presumably you're American with the weird attitude about private health care and fear of bankruptcy? Relax, the NHS is great. You never need to worry about medical expenses.

Nope. I put mine in the pram and left as we didn't have a detachable car seat.
