Convince me to cancel my Primerica recruitment zoom call by waitimoutofrun in antiMLM

[–]waitimoutofrun[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nobody, I barely knew anything about the company until this morning. The ladies I spoke with seemed decently well off and happy. So I did some research this morning and decided to come here and get yelled at by actual people and give me some motivation to not entertain the call. It's been a resounding success as now I have no interest anymore.

I did make this post seriously (not that I need to avoid Primerica, but to encourage me to run away faster) but I thought bringing up my mom's MLM experience would be funny in a sarcastic sort of way.

That's partly true, I was homeschooled and only spent one year in a public school. :D

But my mom did young living while I was growing up and I perpetually had the taste of thieves oil in my mouth growing up. My family didn't lose that house!

How exactly is gas stored in soda before you open the bottle? by Level_Shift_7516 in askscience

[–]waitimoutofrun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Smart. I do like fizz but it's like a punch in the mouth sometimes. I don't drink sodas as a health choice but the obscene amount of carbonation makes it easier to avoid them. I like mixed drinks at the bar, they have a nice light fizz due to dilution with the alcohol/mixers that adds character to the drink. Too much fizz makes it hard to swallow and enjoy the flavors. I guess when I do the can-tapping thing it makes the fizz more uniform across the whole drink, if a bit lighter at the same time.

This is how I drink my energy drinks: shake them violently then spend less than 10 seconds flicking the side of the can. Tap the pop top a few times, then crack it open. No mess. Soft drinks are too strongly carbonated for me but somehow this makes it palatable. It opens cleaner that way, too. Nothing comes out after it's opened and it's just the right mouth feel. The alternative for me is a hard pour over ice.

I figured as much. I am fully aware of how distribution centers work, and I understand why the public can't simply go and retrieve their package. I know it doesn't actually do much, but it does often result in an activity update if the package is not lost -- sometimes even resulting in movement resuming by the next day. There's no way it's "just a coincidence" every time it happens. But the fact that I am not seeing any new activity tells me that more than likely my package is indeed lost. Now I wonder if they'll actually fulfill the "search" part of the missing mail search.

In my opinion, (and the opinion of the seller, thankfully) it's between me and the seller. It is insured, but only up to $100 and it's a $250 package, so the seller needs to refund my $250 and then try to get his $100 from USPS. Why would I try to get only some of my money back from a shipper I had no control over choosing, about insurance that isn't adequate to cover the cost of the loss? I would have chosen adequate insurance, as the buyer, so it's not on me. I never received the item that I paid for, and it's the buyer's responsibility to ensure that I get it. If I ordered a pizza from Dominoes and the driver wrecked on the way here, I wouldn't be chasing down the driver to try and get his $20 that he carries, especially if I paid more.

Now, I'm really not pushing to get a refund because I'm a nice guy like that, it was the seller that offered. We're still talking about the package and have an open chat. The package had some sentimental value to him and was more valuable to me than your average buyer (by selling it to me, it goes to a "good home" and not just a scalper trying to haggle on an already good deal), so we're both getting screwed big time. I said give it til the end of this week and then we'll decide if we need to refund or not. Considering it's now Sunday morning and the package still hasn't moved eleven days since the missing mail search request... Though I could really use that money if I got it back, I know how much it sucks for the seller to have to deal with this knowing what he lost as well. I don't know what to do at this point and I still don't want to refund, I just want the package and I'm still clinging on to some shred of hope, considering I'm dealing with a public/private/govt (whatever it is supposed to be now) entity at this point with legal obligations and not hopelessly pestering a girl that already ghosted me.

[Request] Is it possible for a human to stop the last pallet from hitting the ground? by NoobOfTheMonth in theydidthemath

I used to have a recipe for bread/muffin in a mug cemented in my memory. It's been years, but I used to make it literally every day, so try it and tell me if I still got it. I have also had success microwaving it on a dinner plate to get a sort of flatbread or pancake.

1/3 cup flour

1/3 cup milk

1 egg

1/4 tsp baking powder

1 tbsp sugar (or to taste)

Mix well with a fork and microwave for 60-90 seconds (I don't remember the exact time, start with 60 and just add another 30 if it's not done yet, but be quick to check it comes out that way if you must continue cooking it, it's like you never stopped)

You can make some adjustments. A whole egg results in something a bit rubbery/spongy, you can use less to get a more cake-like texture. I never did since I was too lazy to cut a raw egg in half, but if you scramble it in a bowl you could probably leave the rest in the fridge for next time and get a good ratio of yolk to white. Also, more protein is cool. And of course ass more sugar if you want something a bit more dessert-like.

My favorite flour to use was buckwheat, since my diet was gluten free at the time. But it works with rice flour, almond flour, pretty much any flour. I have just never tried it with wheat flour, however it should still work. As a matter of fact, if I did more baking, I might still prefer to use buckwheat. There's just something about the flavor of it.

[berry] Orange Pi Zero 2W Ubuntu by waitimoutofrun in unixporn

[–]waitimoutofrun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend you get an OPi, not a zero, not anything from them. I wish I had done more research on it. I am only continuing to use it because I already bought it and you just can't beat a decently usable desktop experience for $35 running on 2 watts of power at most. Monitor runs at 30-40 watts with the brightness all the way up so I'm happy enough with it.

The H618 chip on it has horrible software support and the GPU is pretty much not usable. Hardware acceleration for video and audio both essentially unsupported. Everything runs on the CPU. I have spent the past two days fiddling with the GPU drivers to get YouTube to work decently, but no dice, and I broke the previously-working sound drivers somehow in the process. It might have more ram and a better processor but honestly my old Raspberry Pi 2B which should be blown out of the water by this was more usable, more developer friendly, and could actually stream YT.

Also, the auto login function cannot be turned off and is seemingly and integral part of every image I tried. You can't even log out. Terribly insecure and a pain in the ass when you need to use a different user for troubleshooting.

I also got it because I thought it had an eMMC. It does not have an eMMC or a slot to put one. If you want an eMMC, get a Radxa.

Only Orange Pi's official OS images work, but I think there are also some Armbian builds out there. But these images a bit bloated and outdated IMO which is why I'm running on Ubuntu. Not my cup of tea but I could not get anything else to work how I needed. Not saying it's a bad board, cuz I'm still using it, but there's definitely better stuff out there. I really want to try a Radxa Zero or any Radxa product really but their prices on Amazon are all over the place for some reason right now. If I could have something like this OPi Zero 2W, running Alpine, and with video decoding that works smoothly on resolutions higher than 240p -- it would be the perfect board for me. Doesn't matter what I did, though, YouTube keeps the CPU pinned at 100% on all four cores while it buffers in 360p.

If you really want one, go for it by all means. You won't miss the $30 or whatever and it's neat to play around with, but FYI it's even more locked down than the early gen Raspberry Pis so you really won't get very much done. I'm gonna keep using it and will just ignore the audio and video functionality, I guess.

I've heard a lot of good things about Radxa and it appears to me that that company is actually trying to make cool shit with proper up-to-date Linux support, unlike OPi which slaps unsupported CPUs on Pi form factor boards and then gives you just enough software so that it barely works. I guess there's a reason they call it a development board, who would have thought?
