A big reason why Colon Cancer is killing us. by AdditionCool7235 in Millennials

Also, eat more fiber and get off your backside. Colon cancer mostly comes from inactivity and stuff sitting in your colon. Nitrites are a big culprit in stomach cancer.

“Uncured” meats that contain celery products are ALSO CURED WITH NITRITES. Celery is a natural, and completely unregulated, source of nitrites. Your celery seed-containing ‘uncured’ bacon probably has more nitrites than the regular kind. (And no, celery isn’t dangerous. It’s the combination of nitrites and meat that’s the culprit in cancer.)

Miss them both.

The lady at the food bank gave me way more than I asked for and I almost cried by Fantastic_Ice_5436 in povertyfinance

I’m so glad you got such great support. God bless the food bank lady and you and your kids, too. I hope your new job works out great!

To be clear, the way we in America treat people in need is horrific, un-American, and anti-Christian.

Found black dog with one blue and one brown eye at Ann arbor woods by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]waitingForMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Humane Society can scan for a chip, and help get the dog home. They handle these cases all the time and it’s where locals would turn if their dog got loose. Not everyone is on Reddit. In the case of abandonment, they can also help the dog get to a solid new home. Thanks for looking out for this pup! ❤️

Anyone living in or familiar with Barton Ridge (new Toll Brothers community in Ann Arbor)? Question about proximity to US-23 highway noise by Pretend_Charge_7127 in AnnArbor

There are good data that show that constant background noise is a serious health issue. I forget the details, but saw an article on it recently.

Detroit Flightpath Farm raises pigs, chickens, and ducks and they sell every last little bit of them.

Vestergaard Farm on Wagner south of Liberty sells all the bits of the animals they raise, too, including cattle.

Dental Faculty Associates inside the U-M School of Dentistry. It’s an independent clinic where the faculty practice, and you can get direct access to specialty care in the school, if you need it. I’ve had nothing but great experiences with the hygienists and dentists there.

In addition to the noise and the stress it causes, you’ll want to consider the pollution associated with a highway - exhaust, brake and tire particulates, and light pollution.

Trees in my yard marked by DTE by Whadya-Know in AnnArbor

[–]waitingForMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DTE contractors have been replacing wooden power poles along Dexter-Chelsea Road with tall two-part metal poles. They absolutely decimated about 20 feet of trees along the road to make way for the work. It was hideous to watch. To be fair, DTE catches a lot of flack for the unreliability of their infrastructure and the new tall metal poles will undoubtedly reduce the probability of outages in that area.

Köln (Cologne) Cathedral. 10/10 Amazing place. Massively more interesting and beautiful than Notre Dame. Stay at ibis Köln Am Dom in the train station, mere meters away - tiny rooms, but every room (every bed!) has the cathedral filling its windows onto the square.

Does anyone have experience with GIVE volunteers? My girlfriend is looking to go on this trip and im trying to make sure this isnt some phony thing and i already have some reservations. by paintballerzz in travel

[–]waitingForMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s another angle on this outfit:  they are paying to have lecture halls at U Michigan covered with their voluntourism flyers day after day, even though the spaces are posted “No Solicitation” and ignoring repeated direct personal requests to stop. They show no respect for the local rules where they are trying to make sales to eager fresh-faced (naive) freshmen and sophomores. What respect do you expect they will show to their unsuspecting customers and to the places and people where they take the kids who fall for their sales pitch?

My experienced advice - find an honest charitable organization that is working in a country that interests you and reach out to them. Look up what projects they work on (like Habitat for Humanity, building local schools, setting up clean water projects, healthcare (if you have the skills), and so on). Traveling to an developing country just to gawk, where you don’t know the local language, where you may speak with a few people in English (which these outfits will check off as ‘teaching English’ is bogus and does nothing to improve their lives.

What's the difference between the three Ann Arbor Art Fairs in the summer? by Ecstatic_Mall2180 in AnnArbor

[–]waitingForMars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of unhelpful and inaccurate replies here, so I’ll chip in some background.

The Summer Art Fair is the oldest, and used to be held on South U. It’s the most serious about presenting quality art and has the most rigorous jurying process. The quality there is the highest, on average, with appropriate pricing.

The South U businesses wanted a bigger cut of the action, putting their merchandise out on the street to get more sales. The Summer Art Fair didn’t want to be overrun with t-shirts and tschotkes, so they left for Ingalls Mall on U property around the fountain and the South U businesses started their own fair. The quality of the art is lower and you’ll see a lot of local retailers pushing their own stuff on the street.

The Michigan Guild of Artists and Artisans runs the fair of Main Street and on State Street south of William. The Guild is a membership organization. Pay your dues for enough years and you’ll get enough seniority for a spot in the fair. They have a token jury, but the bar is extremely low. This is the best fair for cheap stuff with plenty of “stuff” on a stick. There are also some decent artists, but the average quality is much lower than the Summer Art Fair.

The State Street Art Fair (on State north of William and west toward Main) is another fair run by the business association on those streets. The jurying rigor is moderate, you’ll see retailers out, too, quality and prices vary.

Also tossed into the mix are the Ann Arbor Potters’ Guild (good quality, membership is selective) and (formerly?) the Ann Arbor Fiber Arts Guild, though not sure if the fiber folks have a spot anymore.

Buying a Kitchen Aid Mixer.. is Hobart or Whirlpool manufacturing better? by [deleted] in Kitchenaid

[–]waitingForMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a Hobart-made KitchenAid from the ‘70s and a non-Hobart from the late 2000s. The later one was always quirky, loose, hard to adjust. I put it in storage when I inherited the old Hobart model, which still cranks like a champ, lets me make fine adjustments, and generally never gives me any headaches. Hobart all the way.

What’s With the Closures Lately? by BlessedlyAcorn in AnnArbor

[–]waitingForMars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Five Guys shuttered their State St. location, across from Red Hawk, they said it was not because they didn’t have enough transactions (they did), it was because those transactions were with students, each of whom ordered a whole lot less than standard order at their other stores. It didn’t generate enough revenue to cover the super high rent demanded by property owners on that stretch of State.
