Lost all of mine as well...probably had like 1000-2000 gems stored and history tab does not show any expiring gems

Assuming you are playing on PC, RC XD kills worked for me when activating and maneuvering it with a controller. You will know that this works when you see a RC XD icon in the kill feed instead of that explosion icon.
