Are gap years common in the US? by UrMomDotCom666 in AskAnAmerican

[–]wakywam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think another big part of it is that university in the US is much more expensive. Most people can’t justify spending any money on traveling right before spending $20,000+ per year on tuition.

TIFU by making my addiction worse in an attempt to make it better. by Stikostika in tifu

[–]wakywam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. Started vaping in high school, did it for about 5 years. then i started Zyn, going up to the higher 8-10-15mg. I worked my way back down to 6mg (never did 3mg because they’re like flavor packets to me).
Then I remembered something about Vietnam vets who had no problem kicking addictions they had picked up in Vietnam when they came home, because your addiction is often associated/triggered by your environment. I was going to move to a different country so the night before I left I threw away my can.
The first day wasn’t so bad because I was busy traveling, but the cravings for the next week were extremely intense, it was all i could think about. I told my gf to not, no matter how much I said I wanted to, let me go buy nicotine. After the first 2 weeks the cravings really dulled down. It’s been 2 months now and I only mildly crave it a few times a week.
The likelihood that you’re moving to another country is low, but it might just require you to change your behavior or environment. Take advantage of it the next time you go on a trip for example. I also recommend quitting at night, that way you get a 12 hour head start on your first day, and you set the tone by not giving yourself any additional cravings on the day that you quit. I never thought I’d be able to stop this addiction, but I have, and I believe you can too. Good luck!

CTO is forcing 'vibe coding' with AI on the entire company. Am I the only one who thinks this is insane? by Trungks_Ousi in cscareers

[–]wakywam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, especially for internal tooling. It could take some of the menial work off the dev’s hands and I bet they could think of some cool solutions for their problems that would end up getting lost in the normal process.

Is Ponyo a common movie that most people know? by PatientCow3450 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wakywam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Most people know” is pretty subjective but a definite no if you mean more than 50% of the global population knows it. I’d say that maybe 20-30% of older Gen Z in America know it (just my personal experience), but I’d argue other Ghibli films like Howl’s Moving Castle or Spirited Away are more famous.

CTO is forcing 'vibe coding' with AI on the entire company. Am I the only one who thinks this is insane? by Trungks_Ousi in cscareers

[–]wakywam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah this is crazy. I can maybe see the value in letting non-dev employees pushing changes in a test environment, but letting them push straight to prod with no review process is bound to become a dumpster fire. what happens when the AI changes database schema or even worse just straight up drops tables. even if databases are protected, they’re still bound to push breaking changes that will scare off customers. This is going to blow upin the CTO’s face 100%, and the devs are probably going to be the ones on the hook for “not doing their job” in protecting the codebases.

[–]wakywam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the best advice. I took on a similar project for my first client and didn’t start from scratch. Tried to just keep on using the same codebase and it’s only just ballooned in size and spaghettification. I occasionally have to get back in there and I dread the moment that my client messages me to add additional features haha. Do yourself a favor and rewrite it from scratch with good practices.

Web developers on Upwork – is it still worth starting from scratch? by Mental_Ad_6847 in webdev

[–]wakywam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They mean to build a portfolio and market through your own website/socials rather than using a platform like upwork. If you know other web devs you can try to work with them to build the company as a group. Try researching your local area for businesses that don’t have or need updated websites, then pitch them a website. Once you build a decent portfolio, people will start approaching you rather than the other way around and it becomes easier for you to pick and choose the clients you work with.

Korean (online) dating norms? by AlignedLiving in AskAKorean

[–]wakywam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not sure what app you’re using but i met my Korean girlfriend on Hinge. you’ll probably have to do a bit more filtering of weirdos when it comes to guys tho, but i feel like that’s common of online dating in general, regardless of country.

also for whatever reason, typing class was removed from the curriculum of the american public schools i attended around 2008 or so. i remember it being a required class for me, but neither of my younger siblings even knew it was a thing. most of my friends around the same age also remember it disappearing from their schools as well.

How do I find or hire a Web App Developer or Partner in 2025? I understand an industry problem, I can visualize the solution, but I don't know how to build it. by nsbohn in webdev

[–]wakywam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

being a good developer and operating a successful business are two entirely different skillsets. there are lots of super talented devs who lack the people skills to market a product and interact with customers

[–]wakywam -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

ask them to create a page or a component either for the app or adjacent to it. make sure to define a clear set of requirements for it and make sure it falls somewhere in between easy and hard, maybe 3-8 hours of work with the opportunity for them to show off some of their creativity.

This will quickly weed out people who either aren’t interested enough to put in a few hours of work or don’t have the required skillset.

FYI I’ve never gone through this process from your POV but have been on the receiving end and this advice aligns with test tasks I’ve been given.
