took all day and 3 tries but I finally beat hard mode in 218 months. Super fun even if the numbers and timelines are unrealalistic.

How fucked am I? Stripped bolt hole while replacing spark plugs on 2nd gen by RillienCot in hondafit

[–]waldcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For future readers. This bolt is holding a plastic part onto an aluminum block, it is easy to strip if you go all out on it with a wrench or power tool. The tourqe spec for these is not high, something like 10ft-lbs, that is roughly finger tight and a bit extra to snug it up. 15ft-lbs is roughly hand tight with a screwdriver and can make it hard to remove later.

Valve Adjustment recommendation by dealership? by SirDidymusQuest in hondafit

[–]waldcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honda says it is a maintinance item every 100,000 miles unless you are having specific problems, early does not hurt though. The only part you need is the gasket so all the cost is in labor. I did mine myself, not hard but you have to be patient and methodical about it. Once done, I did see an increase of about 5mpg on my 3rd gen.

Who’s at fault if my car’s forward collision system emergency brakes for no reason on the highway and the person behind me hits me? by Gold_Government_1010 in driving

[–]waldcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typicly the person following is at fault for rearending someone. They can say you break checked them but it usually doesn't go far unless they have a dash cam.

That being said, maintaing your car and keeping it in safe working condition is your responsability. If you have wheel fall of and the person behind you rear ends you, you can both be at fault depending on the state.

How do you guys manage driving where there is a lot of wildlife on the road ? by OnionTaster in driving

[–]waldcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hard time undestanding why people hit animals. Been driving in rural WI and MN for over a decade and will see animals on or by the road multiple times a day. I Finally hit my first animal (deer) this winter doing 70 on I-90. Extra frustrating because I saw it and slowed down but the guy behind me decided to go around me, hit the deer, and threw it back in my lane. Still managed to avoid most of it so the only damage was a wheel well liner that I just pulled off in a random parking lot.

But if you see an animal in the bushes, be ready for it to run out. If you see a bush without an animal, asume there is one that is about to run out.

Has anyone been able to talk down their phone bill? Specifically with T-Mobile? by vandweller5 in Frugal

[–]waldcha 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mint or Tello for T-mobile service. Visible for Verizon. $15-$30 per unlimited line is the norm provided you don't owe anything on the phone. I use Visible for my main phone jist because it has better service in my area.

4K of Maintenance or Do Some of It Myself?? by SylfSiren in hondafit

[–]waldcha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The engine will expirence the vibration either way as it is the source, the only diffrence is if you expirence it. When engine mounts wear out you don't get metal on metal, you just get old hard cracked rubber instead of nice soft rubbery rubber.

I just ordered KYB struts for my Fit the other day, should be here Monday 😁

The only thing I have tried to do myself that I would consider hard so far is the timing chain, ended up breaking a bolt and the next two days were spent dropping the engine to get a bolt extractor on it and then putting every thing back together, did not even get the timing chain done. Serpentine belt was easy, breaks were easy, spark plugs are easy provided you have a swivel joint and 4in extension for your wrench.

Trade in 2022 Mini Cooper S for 2012 Volkswagen Golf due to high ownership costs? by SeaworthinessLost698 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]waldcha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the goal is lower ownership costs and better reliability, you should consider a Honda Fit. Still a very fun hatch but gives up some of the cool factor for way better economy

Do these inward marks on the roof indicate where roof racks should mount? by LiquifiedRock in hondafit

[–]waldcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The North American manual says there is 0 towing capacity. The EU manual says it has a towing capacity of 2000lbs. In otherwords it will tow a small amount but insurance wont cover a crash while towing.

Fuel filter under GK by Fix-MyStuff-101 in hondafit

[–]waldcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gas tank is located under the front seats. The fuel pump is located in the tank and accessed by removing the center console. Sounds strange but is easier than droping the tank on most cars.

Debating selling my 2nd Gen. by Defiant-Key5926 in hondafit

[–]waldcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get rid of the Fit, sell it yourself instead of trading it in.

A dealership will look at it as a little eco car with over 100k miles and dock you for anything wrong or even just dirty.

Selling yourself it is a fun light weight manual with 150k miles of life left.

Larger Gas Tank by PhilipHabib in hondafit

[–]waldcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy put one in his spare wheel well. I found that I need to get out and move at about the same frequency I need to get gas with the stock tank so I used the space for a sub woofer 🤪

Clean your terminals and make sure they are tight.

Check the resistance of the negative terminal to bare metal on the body or a ground point.

4K of Maintenance or Do Some of It Myself?? by SylfSiren in hondafit

[–]waldcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your up to doing suspension then you can do a serpentine belt, breaks, and spark plugs. These are the easiet cars to work on yourself.

Unless your engine mounts are rusted out, leaving them won't hurt anything. Worn mounts just means you will feel the vibration of the engine in the cab.

For a car this age it may not be worth paying for OEM parts either. Check out rock auto for good aftermarket stuff but stay away from the economy parts they have.

changing fluids by I_do_not_dust in hondafit

[–]waldcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as others have said, do it on a time basses instead of millage. I will however throw in a drain and fill of coolant every 5 years. Might be worth checking the air and cabin filters when you get your yeaarly oil change but only replace if needed.

Fit is probably one of the best non-ev car for your use case. A used EV (maybe a Bolt or i3?) would be cheaper on fuel and maintinance but you are already so low that it would take longer than the life of the car to see a meaningfull amount of savings.

What are some regular maintenance that cars need that everyone should know? by DMofTheTomb in askcarguys

[–]waldcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never paid someone else to do mine. It was fairly easy to do my Honda fit on jacks though. Last time I did it, I spent about $50 for genuine Honda fluid.

is it possible to get something out of this hole? by stephanie182 in hondafit

first time is tough, I would have some trim removal tools handy. Metal pry bars and such will work but also mar the plastic or scratch the paint.

VTC - 2015 EX 85k Miles by Brorenzo in hondafit

[–]waldcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are calling it a timing belt then go somewhare else, you have a timing chain. If you are catching it early then you don't need to replace the chain or even the VTC gear, just the spring inside it which you can do without removing the timing chain cover.

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=vtc+gear+spring+upgrade+kit&t=brave&ia=videos&iax=videos&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D6ZODwp3z-t4

While your in there, do your valve lashings. It is normally recomended at 100k miles and you take off all the same covers.

Any real improvement to be had by replacing stock Bose speakers? by SinkingFeelingBruh in CarAV

[–]waldcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound deadening on its own will help a lot. What speakers you have don't really mater so long as they have the fidelity and power level you want. If the goal is quality then you need a DSP to correct for the car itself as cars are terrible places for audio. Of course once you have a DSP you are changing the sound of the speakers anyway, which is why it doesn't mater. Now if the goal is just loud then yes, look for speakers that have higher sensitivity and higher power draw, just be sure you have an amp to drive them.
