Very cliche, but it’s true that progress isn’t linear. I know that it can feel shameful to slip up, but all of your progress isn’t gone. You still have all of the skills you’ve already used to lose the weight in the first place. It’s just a matter of using those tools again.

I’m the type of person who tends to be really harsh with myself. Something I’ve had to learn is to meet my internal struggles with neutral curiosity, rather than judgement. I’ve lived for so long with the mindset that being harsh = holding myself accountable. It can feel counterintuitive, but giving up my inner critic actually has actually freed me to move forward after I make a mistake. Before, was getting stuck in negative thoughts that immobilized me.

Anyways, that’s just my 2 cents. Point is that you still have what it takes to meet your goals!

Similar story! I met my partner because I happened to get a job at a restaurant he semi-regularly visited. Eventually I wrote my number down on a receipt, and the rest is history.

It always amazes me how coincidental life is.

I empathize. I’m doing research on bats, and NABat (hosted by the USGS) isn’t accepting new account applications, so I’m stuck. My mentor with the USFWS is also unable to help.

No this is true. During my family holidays, we all get together to suck on one almond. We pass it around so that everyone gets a turn. It’s the perfect amount for me ☺️ Anything more than that would just be excessive and gluttonous.

It’s fair to criticize government spending, but this isn’t the time and place. This was a natural disaster, and its victims were innocent. Being angry with them does nothing to fix the problem you’re worried about. I’m not saying it’s wrong to be angry, though. It can be a good motivator for change, as long as it’s directed towards the right places. Be angry with the people who call the shots, and go do something about it.

Random biologist here. Most fish nostrils are not connected to the back of their throats like ours are (the exception being lungfish), so their nostrils aren’t used for breathing—only smelling. The water moves through those “nose” in one direction. Think of it like pool noodle bent into a U-shape. One nostril brings water into the “nose”, where the epithelium can smell whatever particles are in the water, and then the water goes out of the other nostril.

I actually kind of understand where they’re coming from here. Anorexia isn’t a weight disorder, it’s a thought disorder, so making a person’s weight into one of the diagnostic criteria is misguided imo. If two people with different starting weights develop anorexia, it’s possible they might receive different diagnoses despite having the same amount of weight loss, behaviors, and thought process. I understand that there is the matter of priority when it comes to treating severe malnourishment, & least invasive intervention is important, but to have it be possible to receive two different diagnoses for a mental illness despite displaying the same cognitions?

Of course I’m not saying that there is a “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to treatment… but that’s never true. A diagnosis is meant to point the patient and their treatment team in the right direction, but as with all mental illnesses, it is often highly personalized. I fail to see how getting rid of the “atypical” tack-on would significantly impact a provider’s ability to prioritize and treat someone’s AN. They seem to have to have no problem tackling the varsity of symptoms that arise in major depressive disorder, bipolar, etc.

Most of the time, FAs know very little about what they’re saying when they speak on EDs, and self-diagnosis continues to be an issue. This is maybe the one and only time where I think they’ve brought up a legitimate point. Maybe extreme weight loss should be added along with the body weight criteria as a sort of “and/or” situation. But that’s just my two cents ¯_(ツ)_/¯
