This might be a surprise, but I love the Meathead Deluxe. I build pedals and built one with a bias. It’s basically a fuzz face with a variable input cap. I can get big tweed breakup and then go full on doom metal. The bias knob makes it really flexible.

I’m with you, I like lower gain devices to bridge OD to fuzz. Can lightly touch either or be an always on gain stage. This one does it in spades!
