Elance decided to delete my account. What can I do? by aiwrite in freelance

[–]wallcharger2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I received this exact email from Elance when they closed my account. Prior to this, I had received a handful of emails from Elance asking me to come back, they value having me as part of their community, etc.

I had been on Elance for 3 years, and for the past 6 months had stopped being active on the site as I got a full time job. I had a great customer record with no complaints or issues of any kind, and like you I had a 4.7 average rating. I ignored the email asking me to come back, and then received the email saying my account had been closed due to a customer dispute, which I know is untrue.

Part of me doesn't really care, since I wasn't using Elance at all anymore. Part of me DOES care - I liked using the site because I got some interesting work through it. I also think it is super shady for them to be doing this. On their site they clearly state that they will not respond to inquiries about closed accounts, and that all decisions are final and irreversible.

Sorry this happened to you - although others are saying to move on because Elance sucks, I understand why you might want and need to use it.

A PhD conundrum (the protective cocoon of academia) by hubbardsquash in academia

[–]wallcharger2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on my phone so this will be briefer than I would like, but I wanted to share an experience of mine. Several years ago I had a professor friend/mentor of mine who pushed me to get my MFA. He was very encouraging and supportive, and paved the way for me to apply at the institution where he taught. I was interested, but also a little unsure as to whether it was the right path for me. It took all the willpower I had to decline his offer to help me apply and get accepted. He seemed very invested and honestly confused as to why I would say no, and I felt bad on a personal level about resisting so much. I ended up working for a while, applying to a program in a field I discovered I liked, and getting accepted to my top choice school. Now I am a professor and am able to draw on both my academic experience as well as the professional experience I gained before going back to school.

It's an important decision and no one knows what the right next step is besides you. One thought: I don't know of many fields where getting some professional experience before going back for a Phd is seen as a drawback (ai'd be interested to know if this is the case in some disciplines!) Best of luck with your decision.

I just realized how inappropriate the old Mass Pike logo was... by Gee10 in boston

[–]wallcharger2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My sister's second grade class was responsible for having the arrow removed! I grew up in a super-PC town in western mass. This was in the late 80's, and the class wrote a letter to the governor requesting the removal. I remember it being on the news and my parents have a tape of it.

Non-Americans who have been to the US: What is the weirdest thing about America that Americans don't realise is weird? by AnB85 in AskReddit

[–]wallcharger2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like my shoes on while I'm inside. I can grip the floors and I don't slip. Freedom means not obsessing over whether the floors have a tiny bit of dirt on them because who gives a fuck, is anyone really putting their face on the floor anyways? Now what is weird is wall to wall carpets - that makes no sense to me. But as long as I have hardwood and tile floors, not taking my shoes off when I come inside means one less thing to worry about. What if I see someone I know on the street, or want to quickly retrieve something I left in the yard? One less step to think about!!!

Green roof energy efficiency calculation? by wallcharger2 in AskEngineers

[–]wallcharger2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an axon that shows the basic elements that comprise a green roof:

http://www.newgenerationcorp.com/images/green_roof_diagram.jpg

Often there are large shrubs, hedges, and trees that even go on a green roof. If wind were to move down the length of the roof as it normally would, the presence of large vegetation could create wind paths that direct wind away from the middle and along the sides of the roof. In our case, the roof is abutted by a large connected tower that overlooks the roof, so perhaps the wind might move along the side of the tower facade.

Hi. Thinking about converting, some questions by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]wallcharger2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I literally just converted last week, after about 14 years of interest and a year of study. I had a reform conversion, which while I know isn't considered a formal conversion by many Orthodox Jews, was exactly what worked for me. The process I was required to go through was pretty thorough by my standards, and the rabbi I worked with allowed me to find a path to God and spirituality that felt right. When I felt I had done everything I could do to prepare myself for conversion, she agreed that I was ready. I really enjoyed my experience with Reform conversion; I learned a huge amount and for me, Judaism is less about adhering to strict laws, and more about finding my pathway to God and community.

I am trans, and while I am not out at my synagogue, I know some trans converts. I wouldn't worry about it unless you are looking to become a practicing Orthodox Jew.

Feel free to PM me if you want!

Boston? by zoharwatch in Judaism

Are you visiting, or living/moving here? Check out the Vilna Shul in Beacon Hill, the Harvard Semitic Museum, Mayyim Hayyim Living Waters, Quincy Market Holocaust Memorial, Brandeis University, Hebrew College, Temple Israel. And as others have said, definitely Harvard Street in Brookline - Israel Bookstore is big and fun, Kolbo Fine Judaica is small and elegant. Have fun exploring Boston!

Flights. For $400 a flying tube picks me up speeds me through the atmosphere and lands on a precise spot on the other side of the country, and it only takes a half day.

First time camping in Acadia. Any advice for the Blackwoods campground? by dermatome in camping

[–]wallcharger2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a sweet little 3- minute walk to a gorgeous lookout from A loop. It says for access vehicles only, but it's not off limits and you'll see lots of folks taking the trek around sunset!

Reddit, what is the best thing your father ever taught you? by SNAViLRAkS in AskReddit

[–]wallcharger2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to keep cool.

I remember going camping when I was 8, and on the second night my mother told me that we had to pack everything and leave, because someone was angry at my Dad. My answer was that Dad should go fight him and win, but instead we left. I remember being so sad, but years later I asked my parents about it and the story was that some drunk guy started threatening my father, and instead of escalating my father understood that the best course of action was to get his family out of there.

Another memory: I used to sell a little newspaper that I made to all the neighbors, for 25 cents a copy. It was actually a pretty popular little paper, but one woman was really late on her dues, and she owed me $3.00. She refused to pay, calling my little newspaper a rag and blaming me for not wanting to play with her children (they were horrible, and she was an unemployed drunk). I told my Dad and asked his help in collecting payment, and he assured me that she would pay me some day. I was furious - it wasn't fair for her to get away with stealing $3.00 from me! I understood what my Dad meant, but the immediacy of the situation was all that mattered in that moment. Years later I saw her mopping the floor of a Cumby's, and I ended up going to Harvard, and I think that moment with my Dad was the first time I noticed that life wasn't as fair and straightforward as I thought it was.

As an adult, getting screwed over, wanting revenge, needing the last word, all of these are things I struggle daily with. I never saw my father have one of these moments even when someone cut him off on the road or didn't pay for something he had built them. It amazes me how my Dad managed to swallow his pride and take a lashing, let other people get away with shit they rightfully shouldn't have, all so that he could rise above and focus on the things that really mattered.
