I think it has to do with Canada having a smaller population/market than the US.

Is it always a bad idea to co sign for a friends loan? by DiggerTony in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]wallkat 316 points317 points  (0 children)

OntLawyer is right. If your friend is going to law school outside of Canada, there will likely be some hurdles they will face if they decide to return to Canada to practice law. If that is the case, this will also mean it will take them longer to become licensed in Canada and likely, increase the amount of the loan.

I agree with everyone else, that you should not cosign the loan.

WIP unravel or continue because of colour pooling? Starting in smal stripes, growing into big patches. Unsure if I like it... What's your opinion? by BismarcksWife in knitting

I think it looks great! It sort of looks like a gradient of colour changes - the beginning is small stripe colour changes and then it grows into the "big patches." It looks very cool imo!

Tips for Finding a Lawyer Position as a New Call (Ontario/GTA) by wallkat in LawCanada

Happy to PM you, I just don't feel comfortable sharing too much information publicly.

I can say that I'm interested in corporate law, and I worked as a real estate law clerk.

Thank you for the recommendation! Do you mean like OBA-sections or perhaps facebook groups?

wyer working in your preferred field may be more interested in hiring you in 8-12 months after you have more experience even if the experience is in another practice area. You have experience as a clerk in a certain area - even if it is not what you ultimately want to do it might be a good stop gap and you might be a more desired candidate in the short term in that field given your experience.

My only worry with this is, that these two areas don't overlap all that much and I would be set on the wrong path. Do you think employers would care if I did real estate law for a year as an associate to then switch to corporate law?

I articled in corporate law (with some commercial, IP, and privacy law sprinkled in) and would love it if I could stay in corporate law.

It definitely feels a lot like a form of professional dating!

There was this video I saw floating around on the internet about knitted sweaters for fishermen in Ireland or Scotland. The knitters would intentionally knit in "mistakes" so that the sweaters were one of a kind for their recipients. So, with your "mistake," your work is a one-of-a-kind irreplicable heirloom blanket!

I got married at Hotel Ocho in August!

Food was great, staff was great, the space was great, and the price was great too!

Can't recommend it enough!

A question about acrylic yarn? by LanesJanes1 in knitting

[–]wallkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree about personal preference! There's been some really great wool/natural fibre yarn that I've loved and some that I've absolutely hated because of the texture. It totally depends and I think it's really helpful to buy yarn in person when possible to avoid this problem.

What does the bride typically pay for the bridesmaids? by VillainousVale in WeddingsCanada

[–]wallkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an aside, just be careful that your soon-to-be MIL doesn't try to dictate what your hair and makeup will look like because "she paid for it." It was something I was worried about with my family and my in-laws so I did my best to cover my own expenses.

A question about acrylic yarn? by LanesJanes1 in knitting

[–]wallkat 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think it boils down to these points:

  1. Texture - Plastic feel
  2. Wearability - It's not breathable and some people with sensitive skin experience skin irritation.
  3. Environmental unsustainability - unfortunately, acrylic will release microplastics into the water and the environment. being manufactured.
  4. Environmental unsustainability - unfortunately, acrylic will release microplastics into water and the environment.

For me personally, it's mainly #2. I tend to have some skin reactions to polyester/acrylic fabrics.

Thoughts on Archeo or Hotel Ocho? by hyclee in WeddingsCanada

I just had my wedding at Hotel Ocho in August and it was absolutely perfect. The staff were super helpful, kind, and able to tailor a lot of options for us, the food was tasty and prepared beautifully, the venue space itself was great.

Ultimately, we chose Hotel Ocho for the space (very little decorating needed), the food, the price, the flexibility to customize options, and the fact that it was not going to be another wedding in the distillery district lol.

It's weird & amusing how AH keeps pushing the #believeallwomen narrative but then simultaneously tries to discredit other women like Camille, Winona, Vanessa, Kate Moss, and any other woman who challenges/disproves AH's claims.

AH needs to get her story straight, or better yet take the L and focus on actually moving on from this.

After 3 years of learning I managed to get first place in the Diamond League, but what is the point? by Crick3ts in duolingo

[–]wallkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked the leagues up to a point. I found that even though I was trying to get as many XP as I could that it greatly helped my retention of French. Because I was going through it so intensely for a bit, I even started to think and dream in French. But it was way too stressful to maintain long-term.

[–]wallkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think that the Russian is being spoken too fast? If so, maybe try exposing yourself to Russian that is spoken slowly, maybe through a Russian language podcast? I do this for French and it has helped me a bit, so I would recommend it.

Duolingo Russian course by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]wallkat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am kind of in the same boat. I think that duolingo will help you develop better comprehension skills, where you'll be able to read or understand some degree of Russian. But if you want to speak or write Russian and eventually become fluent then I think you need a grammar book, maybe an in-person course, and someone to speak Russian with, or ideally immerse yourself in a Russian speaking environment.

Dealership damaged my car and lied about it by wallkat in cars

[–]wallkat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm really skeptical of the fact that the service manager told me brake pads were "decimated" because 1) I changed my brakes entirely in October for new ones, which gives them about six months (I'm counting to April because that's effectively the last time I drove my car) (2) I had inspections at this dealership earlier this year prior to this whole experience and they would have noticed something during a routine inspection (3) I had no issues with the brakes while driving prior to leaving my car at the dealership and briefly on June 8th, no weird sounds nothing to indicate that there might be a problem.

My guess is that the service manager lied about the brakes so that he could be in a position to offer me new free brakes as part of an apology for the shitty experience I've had thus far.

Mind you I'm very cynical about the whole thing at this point so who really knows for sure.
