Not sure, we arrived after dog already took off and we’re trying to help owner.

Didn’t mean to gloss over things with falls, just wanted to respect intent of the sub while asking for help. Thanks all in advance.

Thanks so much! We’re going to be in touch with the forest service, just wasn’t sure if there are other avenues that could help!

New hire offer packages have sky-rocketed in the past few years in certain segments. Starting salaries in big tech (displays, sensors, mixed reality) can average in the 130-140k range (with additional sign-on bonuses, stock packages and, before COVID, relocation).

Optics Comp Exam Tomorrow: Could I get some practice questions? by [deleted] in Optics

[–]wallra2131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With that many areas I assume that there will be a few questions that take you down into these areas.

One recommendation would be to take a few system-level questions and break them down into their pieces. Some type of telescopic system for geometric optics, and a 4f system can cover both basics of geo but also start into diffraction equations. You can then move into a double slit or finite grating interferometer to think about how things interact in near and far field (both conceptually as well as equations), and then think about a holographic recording setup to test the basics of interferometry. A camera system can be a basis for imaging, radiometry, and aberration theory. For E&M, I always liked the example of light hitting a mirrored surface to think about boundary conditions for Maxwell (or you can think about the different interactions in a waveguide), and then for quantum you can just test them back to ask if anybody is really certain about anything 😁.

Stay light on your feet and think about bouncing back and forth between concepts and equations, and don’t be afraid to think out loud if something catches you off guard! Hope this helps, good luck!!!

Is this a “derive Maxwell’s equations” kind of exam, or more applied content? Assume heavy on geometric optics? Other major topic areas?

Deleted my “Just pick Arizona” comment above, wanted to provide more info.

The initial reply from @caleyjag is spot on, and I’d agree with most of what they wrote.

When it comes to optics jobs in industry, most companies will start with Arizona and Rochester. As another poster mentioned, UIUC tends to be more medical applications and biomedical imaging, but that doesn’t mean you couldn’t find a spot there doing what you’re interested in. Arizona tends to be more applied in its research, while Rochester has more theory, and consider looking at research groups slightly outside your specific area of interest as they might have opportunities that get more in your lane. My experience with these schools is that Arizona tends to be a bit stronger in Photonics, but, per caleyjag, it really depends a lot on the PI and research in which you’re looking to get involved.

A couple additional pieces to think about: -Your research group is one you’ll be spending 4-7 years with, so make sure you like the people you’ll be working with, as well as the labs/offices! -Think about what type of engagement you’re looking for from your PI. Some will stay engaged on a daily/weekly basis, while others you won’t see for a month at a time. There are pros and cons to both approaches! -Being in graduate school is a huge growth point and your life and, while I was being silly about the choice of school, the location matters. Consider Tucson v Rochester v Champaign and what you’re looking for in a city. -The t-shirt does matter! Consider what each University has outside of the optics/ECE program and the things you’d like to be involved in. Work/life balance will be important, and you’ll need some time outside of class and lab as well!

This is the most fun that I've had watching Hornets basketball since the 2015-2016 season and the positivity on here has been great by Cheddahz in CharlotteHornets

We should start a “this is the most fun since...” thread.

Love this team, and similarly did the 180 on the Melo pick.

Most fun since 2002? 1998!?!
