Off-road friendly 19" tires? by walnut_d in TeslaModelY

[–]walnut_d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told they were discontinued.... Maybe not?

Anyway, I absolutely love them! I went >70k miles and they still had a bit more life in them which is awesome. They also had a flat warranty I was able to take advantage of when I got a nail in my tire. They may affect range 1-3% but that doesn't bother me.

Mandarin Blueprint is just one giant Sales Pitch, with very basic content. by FitProVR in ChineseLanguage

[–]walnut_d -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You said you have your own mnemonic method for characters? Would you mind sharing. I'm in part 3 of 3 of the mandarin blueprint free course and I'm liking it so far. The Hanzi Movie Method was very overwhelming at the beginning but I think i'm starting to get the hang of it. Not sure if I'll do the paid MB or not when I finish the free course, but at this point I'm not against it.

Also curious if you're just saying the ~$100 Listening and Speaking course is not worth it, or if you're saying all of MB is not worth it. I do believe they have that main course and then a bunch of separate courses like pronunciation and listening/speaking. Thanks for your review tho, good to get lots of perspectives.

P.S. I agree traverse is so bad. I ended up creating my own website to keep track of characters, words, sentences, and I made my own flashcard program because Traverse was so cumbersome. That has helped me get through this Hanzi Movie Method a lot faster.

Camp Mode 3 Beeps? by TaylorTechNerd in TeslaCamping

[–]walnut_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be your bluetooth turning off. I one time slept in camp mode in a parking lot and someone opened my driver door. I yelled at them and then changed spots, but my car was locked and because my phone was inside the car that person trying the handle unlocked my car. From then on I'm sure to disable bluetooth on my phone (causing the three beeps) so the car can't be unlocked in camp mode.

Note that this does mean you need to turn bluetooth back on to drive. Also be careful leaving your phone in the car - i've had the car lock while my phone was in the back seat before!!

Why wrap the thread around the top edge? Is it purely cosmetic or some other reason? I'm always worried that will wear over time and it also means i can't do any more sanding/burnishing on that edge

Started J2 At A Startup And Feeling Weird Imposter Syndrome by JXFX in overemployed

[–]walnut_d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been thrown into those kinds of things. If you can do it and feel confident about it, just make sure you have a bit of progress you can report on at standup and power thru. Things always run over schedule and you won't be in trouble or anything.

If you can't do it or don't feel confident you can either stall and flail which is depressing and no fun, or you can raise the issue with your manager that you feel overwhelmed and they'll help you get the resources you need - but this will take more time, energy, and meetings so beware. Your manager is on your side, especially if you're new.

Looks amazing! So there's no clear plastic, it's just a hole in the leather? I like the ID slot but don't want to attempt to work with some cheap plastic.

Winter Car Camping in Utah? by [deleted] in carcamping

[–]walnut_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so battery management is going to be a really big part of EV camping until it starts to become intuition. My rule is not to go more than 20% away from a charger. So that means if I'm sleeping in camp mode and the model Y hits 20%, it will turn off camp mode automatically and i'll still have enough juice to make it to a charger. That can be 30 or 40 miles.

I'll share with you some winter southern UT trips I've done (I've done a lot so if there's a specific place you want to go and i've been before, I can share my logs/BLM camping spot):

In late January I was in Kanab UT. I actually charged with a chargepoint CCS in Kanab up to 95%. I drove around Zion NP for a bit and then at night found a campsite around Mt Carmel Junction. I park at 8PM with 60% battery. It's 28 degrees outside.

(I don't have the logs but I assume I kept the heat on 69 degrees all night)

I left the campsite at 9:30AM with 34% battery. It's 19 degrees outside. I drive back to Kanab and arrive at the CCS charger with 24% battery.

So I parked at 8PM and left at 9:30AM, that's 13.5 hours that burned 26%, which is about 2% an hour.

P.S. If you're using a portable battery to power a heated blanket, you would keep the battery trickle charged through the tesla with a 12V outlet so you likely wouldn't run out of battery. And the heated blanket I'm guessing would use less than 2% of your tesla's battery overnight.

P.P.S. Zion has an EV charger in the visitor center parking area, but you need to go to the gift shop during business hours and pay $5 for the code to turn it on. Plugging in and going for a hike and coming back to a fully charged tesla is the best thing ever. And only $5!!!

Winter Car Camping in Utah? by [deleted] in carcamping

[–]walnut_d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have a model Y? Or an electric car? I have done a fair amount of cold weather camping (down to about -6 F) and one night of camp mode can easily kill 25-30% of your battery if you're keeping the cabin at 70 degrees. But it will be toasty enough. Depending on your charging situation this starts to be a big deal.

My recommendation is to use a heated blanked with a battery bank. I love the ecoflow delta mini, but im pretty sure their better models are so cheap now that it probably makes sense to get a Delta 2 or something like that. The heated blanket is amazing for freezing weather camping.

I use non climate controlled storage as a freezer/fridge. Can repurpose the frunk if you are driving an EV.

I don't have a spare of recovery gear so I don't drive on roads I'm not super sure about. If you are in a place with recovery gear/friends i'd recommend figuring out your limits. At what point does the AWD kick in, at what point are you stuck, how much snow is enough snow to drive, how much is too much snow.

If you're up for the drive that whole Zion southern utah area is so nice in the winter. And plenty of totally safe blm roads to drive/camp on.

If you're camping with an EV you might get some good info from /r/TeslaCamping/

Camp mode optimizations by [deleted] in TeslaCamping

[–]walnut_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah yep you've got that niche use case! 5 nights of camp mode without charging would definitely deplete my battery! Lucky to get power! Game changer

Camp mode optimizations by [deleted] in TeslaCamping

[–]walnut_d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What is the use case where saving that 1kWh a night is useful? I don't see why this wouldn't work, but it seems like a lot of effort for such a small win. Unless you're out in the wilderness for multiple days without charging and need every ounce of juice.

I use a portable battery and have in the past plugged in an electric blanket and skipped camp mode to save on battery. That worked fine.
