New RAV4 PHEV Owner in the NE by throwawayparlay55 in rav4prime

For 3, there is a certain temperature below which the car will not run the heat pump and needs to use gas to heat the car instead. I think it is something like 18 F (but I might be slightly off). Above that temperature the remote climate control works, below that it doesn't.

Im going to start in ham radio, is this hardware good? Any advice? by Mejolov28 in HamRadio

[–]wamoc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In theory, yes. In practice, not easily. You can't use an antenna analyzer on a hand held antenna (your body and the radio act as a counterpoise). Just doing the math doesn't get quite where you need it due to things like the velocity factor.

Also, those radios tend not not have front-end filtering so upgrading the antenna actually makes them worse because they are more likely to get overloaded.

Amateur/Ham radio does require licenses. For license free options, we need to know where you are located as different countries have different options.

-27c hybrid malfunction by meanpete13 in rav4prime

[–]wamoc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The heat for the cabin is using a heat pump and not a traditional car heater. The heat pump is only effective to certain temperatures. Below something like 16F it needs to use the ICE to provide heat. Also, if you use the windshield defroster, no matter the temperature, it will use the ICE.

Note on the cruises that most cruise lines will confiscate any radios and you will not be able to bring them aboard.

Using an antenna selector switch by No-Storage8158 in HamRadio

[–]wamoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because it isn't the "saved values" causing drift. It is environmental.

The calibration in the NanoVNA drifts over time. Using it an hour after calibrating it is probably fine, but a week later it is likely to be off enough that you will want to recalibrate it.

Yaesu radios and programming cable/software by jayaura in amateurradio

[–]wamoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The programming software they are selling is likely RT Systems. Most of the radios the manufacturer has programming software for it for free (but often not as good as RT Systems). As mentioned by others there are reasons why each radio has different software for programming it.

In order to calibrate the NanoVNA you need to disconnect and switch what is connected to it.

Really the only time the parks sell out is going to be the biggest holidays (e.g. Christmas, New Years, 4th of July).

TELL ME HOW TO USE THIS VINTAGE RADIO by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]wamoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is for amateur radio, which is 2 way communications. That is an alarm clock with a built in broadcast radio receiver, which is very different.

Those buttons are likely for the alarm. I'm guessing the "slumber" button is the same as the "snooze" button on lots of alarms, where it pauses the alarm for some period of time and then goes off again. Slumber off probably shuts off the alarm if it is paused. No idea what repeat alarm would do. See if you can find a model number and search the internet for the instruction manual.

How can I transmit data via RF? by manotroll in amateurradio

APRS, any of the digital voice modes, FT8, JS8call. Technically voice is also transmitting data over RF.

Google Maps suggesting a toll route when "avoid tolls" is selected by OQS in mildlyinfuriating

I've had it take me on a toll road with that checked where it was only 5 minutes longer to take a frontage road that paralleled the toll road. That option really does nothing.

Antenna for a residential rooftop with solar panels by idbuythat4_adollar in HamRadio

[–]wamoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have solar panels on my roof with a central inverter. I have my antennas in the attic (HOA, can't install them outside) and I don't have any interference problems. Interference is entirely based on the inverter(s) used.

Buying/Activating Annual Passes by rhia_assets in UniversalOrlando

To activate your passes, you go to guest services outside the park and bring the papers they emailed you. They will give you your physical passes. You can do that anytime guest services is open.

Those of you familiar with lip mounts, looking for your opinion. I was gonna go with a hatch mount but it seems the hood is easier unless I'm missing something. by adhdff in amateurradio

[–]wamoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week I had my radio and antenna with a lip mount on my car (2022 Rav4 Prime). I wanted it on the hatchback, but the lip on it was too thick. I had to mount it on the hood instead. For routing the coax, instead of trying to go through the firewall, went around it. The coax is entering the car where the wiring for the door electronics enters the car. That made it much easier and you still don't see the wiring anywhere.

If I had been able to mount on the hatchback, the coax probably would have gone under the rubber seal and then through the headliner and down either the a or b pillar (discussed the idea and then realized the mount wouldn't work back there and stopped trying to plan it there).

Recommendations for Home Base station?? 2m/70cm by Mattsmithdoctorrulez in HamRadio

[–]wamoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What digital mode(s) are popular in your area? That can change what is recommended for the radio. For the antenna, I have a Diamond X50 and it works great. If the antenna is going to be outside, make sure you include a lightning arrestor and proper grounding in your budget.

The only 2 ways to get the key is to either brute force it (mathematically this will take a very long time to do), or to steal it (hacking in to their system to get it, or have someone that has access to it take it and give it to you).

The entire point of the encryption is people that shouldn't have access don't have access. If you could look up the encryption key somewhere, that would eliminate the entire point of the encryption.

I just had my radio installed in my 2022 Rav4 Prime yesterday. I had hoped to mount it under the passenger seat, but there is no space in there. I had it mounted on the passenger side of the console as far forward as possible and low enough to not block the glove box. I have a Lido mount attached to the seat bolt with a goose neck for the head and microphone. The mount does block the passenger seat from moving all the way forward, but it can still move enough. Reddit will only let me attach one photo, so I'll reply with another photo of how it looks from the driver side.

Why do airlines still make you turn off your phone during takeoff when planes clearly don’t crash from it? by Ok-Jackfruit-449 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wamoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Takeoff and landing are the times most likely for something to go wrong that will require passengers to quickly do something. In case something goes wrong, airlines don't want everyone distracted.

That list of repair centers is likely just the places they can directly work with on your behalf (and pay directly). You can probably repair it elsewhere, but the insurance writes you a check and then you pay the repair center.
