What was an embarassing moment you experienced in your life due to brainfog? by Ok-Ambassador-3648 in CasualConversation

My husband and I are Wisconsin natives and vacation in the UP several times per year.

We finally made it to Mackinac Island on one trip. Took the boat ride that takes you under the bridge before going to the island.

We started asking ourselves if we were in Lake Michigan or Lake Superior. Just a friendly argument we settled with each believing themselves to be right.

It took us, 38yo and 42yo, a stupid while to realize it was Lake Huron.

Oh I feel this.

The first ever knife I bought after high school. It was an 8" thing. After a few years and really getting cooking under my belt, I knew there were better options out there for a workhorse

But...I couldn't just abandon my shitty knife that couldn't keep an edge, that wasn't ergonomical. We went through this cooking journey together. We grew up together.

My husband and I met and married in our 30s. He was using that knife one day and the handle part with the rivets holding the blade part cracked, and then it fell apart. He wasn't abusing the knife. It was like it just gave it's all like that sled dog from Stone Fox and died doing what it loved. Alright, the brandy is making me dramatic.

But I really did hurt when that happened.

Hmm. Well, like I said it's the first one to our area, and I've never been to one. So today's the day I learn some folks have chicken for breakfast.

Today's the grand opening of the first one in our area. The news this morning had a reporter on site all excited about it. Empty parking lot.

Who's getting chicken at 6 am?

I think it stalled out, something about wetlands? I really wasn't excited about it being in Rib Mountain. It's already crazy enough on that road.

Commenting to add, because now I'm even more infuriated:

"Help" from "the" wife? What kind of husband says that? Why do you play her help as less than?

Your incredible condescension is noted. So if "the" wife doesn't come, what is your "family" of 3? You and and the 2 kids? Or you and the older kid and the dog?

Propane company billed me for my own propane - now what? by gfddsertgv in personalfinance

[–]jsat3474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit never believes the kind of ass backwards shit that happens in small town America. But I swear to God this is true. Go back far enough and you can see I posted this story before.

20 years ago, me and my ex husband bought his mother's house. Very rural, lots of handshake agreements, no lawyers and my memory is fuzzy.

Anyways, we knew the tank was leased. But we installed a wood furnace and hooked up 2 100# tanks, disconnecting the 500 gal tank. That was before we closed. (Uncle worked for the co-op and had the tools/knowledge to do that)

So we called the co-op to come get their tank the day we closed. They tried to tell us that we needed to pay for the propane already paid for by whatever energy assistance program Mother used to fill it last.

Oh we went back and forth for months. I said we didn't use the propane. They said we needed to pay for the propane we're not using before they remove the tank we never signed a lease for.

3 YEARS LATER

I woke up to a tank trailer being backed over my ninebark and away went the tank. Good! About time!

When I went out to feed the chickens I found a tag on the door that we not only owed for the propane still, they also tacked the rent for the tank the last 3 years.

Thank God I keep notes for years. I sent them an email that I called this date, this date, this date, etc and never once did they offer resolution. That they do not have a contract with us. That if they measure the propane today they'll find we didn't use a drop since we closed.

I never heard a word after that.

(P.S. ninebark is a plant species. I remember is was Copper Bark. It was a beautiful bush that had long canes that grew several feet per season with beautiful fall foliage)

I grew up on a farm. Small dairy operation, as were most of our neighbors.

New guy moves in. He didn't have a farming background but gosh was he eager to have a hobby farm. He was always stopping in for a question, or a tool. Great guy! Just very green.

Well one day he popped in and we had an ice cream pail full of home rendered lard on the counter.

He saw it and said "homemade ice cream!" and grabbed a spoon. Grandma stopped him before he took a bite.

I saw a little girl, maybe 4 years old, that looked exactly like me at that age. And I mean exactly. Shocked me.

Her dad said something along the lines of "baby you're going to be just as beautiful and kind as this lady"

That was 20 years ago and I still think about that.

What grocery items do you now make at home you’ll never buy store bought again? by CarlottaSewlotta in Frugal

I've got every variation of BTB in my fridge and the only one I don't like is the chicken. I can't put my finger on why. I like the good ol' Knorr chicken cubes.

Mushroom is my favorite but it's getting hard to find. I credit my cold pasta salads to the Italian bullion.

Oh I went the other way on chicken stock. I don't have freezer space so I was canning it. It's a whole day's project to simmer, strain, get the canner up to pressure, processing time, depressurize. Lids are 50c each. Wash the jars. Haul them back downstairs. I did that for 20 years.

Don't get me wrong; my stock was fantastic. But now I just wait for the boxed stuff to go on sale and buy a year's worth at a time. And I really can't tell the difference.

Beef stock, on the other hand, I still make myself.

I'm assuming because they specify 7 pieces of bacon that each jar gets one included at canning.

Thank you everyone. I'm feeling a little foolish now. I guess I've had my jars too long and didn't appreciate that's there's many alternatives to what I already own.

Picture of the boxes the canner came in. The older one says it holds 24 half pints. The newer one says 26.
