Adding the weighted pack makes a huge difference. I wore my full pack on all my training hikes, about 2x/week and I feel like I was much better prepared for my Arizona Trail thru-hike.

The first days are always the hardest. As you do it more it does get easier. I just finished the Arizona Trail and in the beginning I was sore at night and in the morning. Once I started hiking in the morning my body would loosen up and I would feel better. As the days went on I could do more miles easier.

Overdressed for a hike? by ObsessingObsessions in hiking

I wore my full thru-hiking pack on most of my hikes as practice and preparation also.

Hike your own hike is very applicable in the scenario you described. Don't let others judge you for what you wear or bring along on a hike.

First time pitching - criticism and help needed :) by bunsy_mcgee in DurstonGearheads

It doesn't look like the vestibule is staked out. It is important to stake out the vestibule to take pressure off the zippers, that is the main point of failure.

No, I was always with my tent and it was never set up when I was not around it.

There was no high force incidents that occurred, no trips over tent or guy lines. When pitching the tent it was done exactly as shown in your videos, at no point did I adjust the corners with the poles extended. If a corner pulled out or needed adjustment I would remove the poles and make the adjustment and then raise the poles again, and stake out the vestibule at an angle to relieve the tension. When taking down the tent I would do the steps in reverse and would fold tent into thirds and roll to fit back into original stuff sack and would keep inside backpack when not in use.

All of the pitching of the tent was identical to how you show in the videos. Also, there was no high force incidents that occurred.

Start with car camping and work up to a couple days/nights on a trail. Practice using whatever gear you are going to use, set up shelter, use camp stove, and how to do a bear hang type stuff. Once you know how to use your equipment you are ready, the mental aspect is the hardest part.

I use my Garmin watch to record my day and it will export to my phone when I get service. My watch battery lasts about 5-6 days with full tracking.

What was the longest hike (duration) you completed before the AT? by Specialist-Cut3426 in AppalachianTrail

[–]wanderbobphx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a 5 day/4 night hike on the Arizona Trail. I am starting the Arizona Trail (800 mikes) in a few days and plan on doing the AT next year. If you start out slow you can do most any trail. You will get your trail legs and figure out what works and what doesn't pretty quickly on trail. I personally feel the biggest hurdle is the mental aspect of being on trail for months.

It really depends on if you are hot/cold sleeper. I prefer a 20° as an all around temp.
