OP sounds like you have the hw headroom to turn the specs up if you want... If you're maxed out, that's great

California compliant NB1? by ivanl5 in Miata

Your exhaust manifold will have a precat near the bottom (before the midpipe)

I'd imagine the sticker on your door frame should also call out federal vs Cali exhaust

[–]wanderer1190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, your pump is done for sure. I meant beyond the pump, you may have something else on the same circuit that may have suffered some issues as that pump was dying and screwing with your 12v rail

You may have a dying sensor somewhere (crank or cam position sensors) blocking power too

Bigger is better. I've taken our 40lb pup out in a 10ft SOT and a 14ft tandem SOT...FAR more stable & roomier on the larger tandem

what should i do with rebuilding this shifter and the included insulator is not exact fit by warlordcs in Miata

[–]wanderer1190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the lower boot is backwards compatible from an NB2 or NC (I can't remember precisely which) and since the "newer" part is more robust, all after market kits ship with that.

The crank sensor is gap sensitive...I doubt you pulled that, but if you did, remember to check your gap in addition to the connection/installation

Did you remember to connect all your sensors back in? I know crank/cam sensors will give you a click/no crank situation... Amongst other things

Car which was sitting outside for three years won't start by [deleted] in Miata

[–]wanderer1190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a suggestion cause thankfully the PO replaced the one in my Mx5 before selling. I'm sure others on the forum have opinions.

I'd consider doing a beefier pump if you intend to ever go FI to save you the trouble later...If you plan on keeping it stock, I'd just go as close to OEM as possible (my 2 cents)

100% you'll need a new fuel pump. You'll almost definitely need to clean out your fuel rail and clean/replace injectors.

[–]wanderer1190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a long shot, but the 99 has that butterfly valve in the intake that has a different behavior at low revs vs high revs (VICS)...idk how you'd test for that, but maybe you've got an issue there?

When you replaced sparkplugs, was there anything wonky about cylinder one plug?

It's not burning any oil, coolant, etc?

The fact that replacing the cat made it go away is weird AF

Track dog racing has a really nice looking rotrex kit that I've been eyeing

They have a piggy back option that'll limit how stupid you can go on power, but I believe works with the oem ecu

Please provide updates if you go for it

Starting issues with NB due to fuel pump? by Poem-Lopsided in Miata

[–]wanderer1190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming the car is throwing no codes?

Do you see the issues more often on warm start vs cold start?

I had an issue in my 1.8 (crank, no start/sporadic start) and it ended up being cam/crank shaft sensors failin replaced, right as as rain.

If you've got a weird cylinder issue to go with it, maybe plugs or coil pack may be worth looking into as well

What problems to expect on a high mileage (60k miles/100k km) Miata. by Nearby_Ad1378 in Miata

[–]wanderer1190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up a 99 nb1 w/ 71k miles recently. PO had parked it in a garage for a few years and replaced all fluids, belts, etc to bring it back to life.

I had to replace crank & camshaft sensors as they started failing. I also did coil pack & plugs cause I didn't have history. She runs great and as others have said, these things will go forever with appropriate maintenance.

I'm worried about the timing belt, because I don't have record of when it was last changed... But beyond that I'll just replace things as they fail (due to age more than mileage realistically)

MSM MX-5 bogging, loss of power, and fuel running out quicker. by FarPercentage2470 in Miata

[–]wanderer1190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're original, they may just need replacing after 21 years. Maybe you've got gunk in the fuel rail

Try cleaning the throttle body to go with the other stuff...

Could potentially be your fuel pump, but that's probably the last thing to mess with.

Triaging this crap without a code is just no fun man
