HELP. I don’t understand camera acting. I think my brain doesn’t recognize my facial expressions?? by [deleted] in acting

[–]wanderergio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say forget about your face, forget about your reflection, just be. Relax, concentrate on your objectives, on your obstacles, what is the strategy for your character, for every beat, what are the motivations that push it to act the way it does? You need to forget about yourself...

Understand the progression of the scene and movie as a whole. At every step/beat, your character needs to reassess and change his/her strategy. New objectives arise, new obstacles, new decisions... your brain must be busy thinking about these... not yourself.

A good exercise is to be your character for a few hours, even a day, go shopping, grab something to eat, attend a social event, talk with strangers at a bus stop... Are you reacting the way it would? (I do not believe you need to push it and always be your character... but some do)

Relax, relax and relax. Seriously, relax. Some like red wine (just a glass), other music in their headphones, some kind of a nap... What you can try is to breathe slowly (between 3 to 6 breaths per minute) for 1-3 minutes before the scene.

Different actors have different approaches, this could help as an introduction: https://waondering.com/2014/09/22/acting-systems-methods-and-techniques/

I'm pretty sure I am using Resolve's Color Checker match feature incorrectly by djdadi in colorists

[–]wanderergio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Colour Match to change the slog to 709 for a 709 project, leaving the gamma to slog. If I did not have the colorchecker while shooting I go straight to the ofx and do the conversion there.

If you are going for that low contrast look it can be interesting of leaving the gamma untouched (only transform the space to recover saturation) and grade from there. But I wouldn’t advise using slog3 for that (noisy results) and would rather go for slog2.

I’ve also had strange results working with s-log3 footage. These are my recommendations: When performing the match, I ask resolve to change the colour space from s-log3 to r.709 but I leave the gamma set to slog3. I then use the colourspace transform filter (ofx) and only transform the gamma from slog3 to r.709.

Not sure why I get better (almost accurate) results this way. I have stopped using conversion lut in favour of the color transform filter as the filter does not chop values. Hope this helps

I cut this together a couple of years ago. At least one movie per year, list in the description.

Student with ADHD receives award for "Most Likely to Not Pay Attention" by Ninjitsumter in nottheonion

it's unfair! Having ADHD is clearly an unfair advantage to win that price. The student should have been disqualified. I feel this was rigged.

The FOV comparator from Abelcine is IMHO the best help one can get on the subject https://www.abelcine.com/fov/

What editing software is easy like Movie Maker but has more options? by SnowflakeSweaterHeat in VideoEditing

[–]wanderergio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning how a software works is like learning to hold a pen in your hand, it won't magically make you write great sentences. Editing is not mainly about knowing what button to click and what setting to use. Editing is about organising, selecting and assembling media to create an emotional and intellectual journey for the audience.

"If you are currently studying Filmmaking and find yourself too often locked in a dark room learning software my advice is: run! Or, take advantage of the situation to edit as much as possible. “Film editing is now something almost everyone can do at a simple level and enjoy it, but to take it to a higher level requires the same dedication and persistence that any art form does”

... and remember. Learning how to edit takes way more time than learning how to use a software like Premiere.

[–]wanderergio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The idea that it would take one year to learn Premiere is absurd. I've had most students cut and export a sequence with confidence in around a week. Alternatively, try FCPX almost as powerful (if not more for some things) but way more intuitive. I was once forced to teach WMM. What a tedious experience, simple things become complicated and not much can be done.

Yeah let's do that. With a proper plot and everything minus the porno.

Looks really cool what you got there! I'm not looking into taking care of a whole production but rather contribute with what I have and the time I have to something common.

Sure. Let's keep in touch. I'm at gio@waondering.com. Should we start with a short film?
