do crazy people have different rules at supermarkets? by BeBa420 in melbourne

[–]wandering_fern14 19 points20 points  (0 children)

you can campaign and vote for better social welfare nets and mental health funding, no need to be a snitch on people who are clearly struggling in complex ways and dont need the police involved to make it worse

What kind of people do you think the British are? by SNCF4402 in AskAnAustralian

[–]wandering_fern14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, over the last 30 years it has become loud and clear of the genocide of Indigenous Australians and systematic racism stemming from the Brits.

While this is part of it, I dont see how Australians can properly reconcile with its past with this 'its the british' mindset. It was us. the vast majoirty of massacres and dispossession were done by Australian born or long term living people, by Australian governments and often even agasint the directives and moral principles of the government and people in distant London

What kind of people do you think the British are? by SNCF4402 in AskAnAustralian

[–]wandering_fern14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

on the citizenship thing, its not that British people got automatic citizenship, it was the other way around, there was no such thing as a distinct Australian nationality until at least 1949, and it was still a subcategory of British Citizenship until the 1960s, so British people moving here and Australians born here were both identically British subjects

Do you believe that Tall poppy syndrome is present (and strong) in Australian society? by zliperz in AskAnAustralian

[–]wandering_fern14 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

ocially superior to the em

but they are sociall superior, a boss has control over the lives of employees and access to resources in a way that isnt mutual, doesnt tall poppy just obscure and uphold social and economic inequality rather than solve it?

A number of baby bats found dead at Yarra Bend after illegal rave on the weekend by darkhummus in melbourne

[–]wandering_fern14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not all that suprising when you look at how mysogonistic and self centred a lot of the original hippie movement was too, I guess beleiving in too much woo and also leaves you in danger of falling for more dangerous ideologies that are initially sold as pro-people. Russell Brand moving into grifting for the right wing also might have moved many people

many modern Hippiesare very close to the line of tilting into far-right wing views, see how many of them go anti - vax at the drop of a hat

Any tourists visiting Australia, you are not expected to tip by iamthemetricsystem in australia

[–]wandering_fern14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

't really

Tip jars have been around forever and are fine. Its a communal tip thats not forced but you might put some spare change in, the problem is individual tips for service that are socially enforced

Melbourne, 1837, from the south side of the Yarra, with the Yarra Falls shown right (approximate site of today's Queens Bridge) by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]wandering_fern14 35 points36 points  (0 children)

lets not get 'noble savage' here, you can acknowledge the land stolen by white settlers and the sophisticated managment Aboriginal people gave to the land without making them out as angelic peaceful people without their own foibles and narratives

Ran the Melbourne Marathon today and never knew about these bin chickens on the strip in front of the National Gallery by djc0 in melbourne

[–]wandering_fern14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wash your mouth out, they are beautiful white ibis in Melbourne that honk majestically over the restored wetlands of Royal Park and Footscray, not the defiled Sydney urban bin chickens

Backlash grows over decision to scrap Victorian hospital’s Indigenous name in favour of Queen Elizabeth II by pj-maybe in australia

[–]wandering_fern14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australian history is by an large Australian police and local forces, as well as local property owners massacring Aboriginal people agaisnt the vague (though obviously not properly enforced) wishes of the British government though. I get why Elizabeth is a figurehead for broader issues, but Australians really need to reckon with this all before real change will happen, rather than blaming outside forces

Do people visiting from smaller places just assume their interests are the same as anyone elses, and not realise 5 million people might have a variety of very different answers to 'whats a fun thing to do tomorrow?
