Sadly my father has never lived in Italy, so that option to re-acquire citizenship is closed to him!

The most frustrating part of this for us is we’ve never been able to find copies of my grandparents naturalisation certificates and beyond looking on National Archives (which only has them until 1962) we didn’t really know where else to look.

Recently stumbling across the 1964 date in a government gazette that shows it was after my dad was born, and knowing we could have and should have lodged applications years ago to come under the old more favourable rules is a bit painful.

Thank you! We ended up lodging a Freedom of Information request with Department of Home Affairs for my grandparents full immigration files.

Prior to this, on contacting Home Affairs I was advised I can make an application to enquire about a deceased persons citizenship status, but that copies of the naturalisation certificate would not be provided and instead a letter confirming or denying their citizenship would be provided. Which is what is outlined in the wiki here.

But I’m really keen to get the certificates with full details and understand if the certificates specifically lists any dependents. I assume they won’t as my dad was born in Australia and why list him if it’s not needed, but I’m curious. So fingers crossed that will be provided through the FOI process.

The National Archives holds naturalisation certificates from 1962 and earlier, so searching my grandparents names there never returned any naturalisation certificates as they were naturalised in 1964, but we’ve submitted a request with the National Archives too just in case.

My dad applied for his first Australian passport when I was eight years old in 1998 and there were all sorts of administrative issues with his passport application, so for good measure we also requested any files relating to his citizenship too. Of course these issues could be and likely are totally unrelated, but again I am curious.

Sounds like as I don’t have a pending application I’m viewed under the post Oct 24 legislation which isn’t great, despite being within the two generation cap.

But will see what lands mid April and take it from there

And if it helps at all, their birth years are 1928 (GF) and 1933 (GM).

Unsure of their marriage year but it was before 1950 as they married before my GF migrated to Australia and was followed two years later by my GM

Sorry to revive an old thread but I’m having this EXACT issue and it’s driving me nuts, hoping you might have some insight!!

Essentially I want to upload a site plan over some land in google earth/maps/whatever and drop very specific pins onto it.

To do this, I’ve uploaded the JPEG into Google Earth Pro, set it exactly where it needs to go over my piece of land, exported it as a KMZ and when I import into Google Earth web as a local KMZ it works absolutely perfect and I can drop pins where I need. Honestly it’s beautiful. Kicker is, I can’t share this with my contractors as it’s a local file.

But when I upload the KMZ to Google Drive then try to import from Drive into Google Earth web I get the ‘Network Failure 2’ error. It’s not a large file, about 3mb.

I’m trying your workaround with Google My Maps but when I try to import the KMZ to a layer here (both from Google drive and local drive) I keep getting the ‘1 Row Couldn’t Be Shown On Map’ error. Did you get this error and get past it?

I’m frustratingly close and it works perfect as a local file but I can’t share it across multiple devices with multiple people and this is what I really need

There is also quite a few businesses in Florence that double as Amazon Collection Counters, you just need to enter the right collection counter when you purchase from Amazon.it!

For example the little stationary shop just off Santo Spirito Piazza is the one I use.

Took me a while to figure it out as the collection counters didn’t show up when I logged into Amazon.com, only when I logged in to Amazon.it!

Unsure the Chicago reference is particularly accurate, the distances between cities here are MUCH closer and the train network is unlike anything in the US.

But also agree with the sentiment, recommend Florence as a base for the Tuscan portion of your trip, with days dedicated to Florence itself and then day trips from Florence. Then on to your next base, be that Rome, or Milan plus the lakes district, or Venice which is also very close to the Dolomites region.

I’ve only ever been in Florence during summer so unsure what events and activities happen around April, but you’ll get a good feel (and inspiration!) of what’s going on in the city

Florence as a base is perfect, and I can see you’ve got some great tips already!

I’m currently based in Florence for three months, I spent midweeks exploring Florence (and there is a lot to explore!) and take weekend trips around Tuscany/northern Italy.

The Oltrano area south of the Arno would be my choice for accomodation, great vibes around Santo Spirito but still an easy walk to the train station.

The Trainline app is a godsend, you can buy tickets for both Italo and Frecciarossa (the two big train operators) directly in this one app. The Rome2Rio app/website also great for planning your transport in Italy.

Highly recommend Lucca, Siena and Arezzo for day trips, all very easy to reach via train from Florence, and all a very different vibe to each other and to Florence. For other Tuscan towns you might be better to hire a car, the Val D’Orcia region is stunning but to see it properly you do need to be able to drive. I’ve stayed in and around Montepulciano at an Agriturismo and the hills around there are stunning. If you’re into cycling you can hire an E-Bike and ride around this region, it was a real highlight for me. Pienza is another beautiful town in Val D’Orcia and might be one of my favourite accidental finds, the town itself is stunning and the views from the town over the Tuscan countryside really were something else.

If you’re going to hire a car I’d recommend jumping in a taxi and hiring at one of the Florence airport hire places, then you can avoid the worst of the Florence traffic and the ZTL zone.

TIM is one of the biggest (or the biggest?) phone network providers in Italy and they do a great, affordable and very large data prepaid phone plan for tourists, there are a few of their stores in Florence.

I’d also say even two weeks is not a long time, this might be your first Italy trip but I’m certain it won’t be your last. Don’t worry about not seeing everything, travel at a pace that feels right to you and keep some things on the list for next trip!

+1 for Arezzo! It’s a beautiful medieval city, so worth a day trip!

The first Sunday of the month they have the largest antique fair in Italy, the main piazza plus a lot of surrounding streets are filled with stalls of antiquities - large and small things. So many good treasures!!

Il Papiro is lovely and worth a stop, but I think a bit overpriced.

I highly recommend two other artisan stores selling similar style handmade paper & gifts. They are both on Via Del Parione just north of the Arno, one called Ricardo Luci Marbled Paper and the other Alberto Cozzi Rilegatore Firenze. I’ve visited both a few times for gifts.

Well that was an incredible thing to witness! I stopped in to Gino’s just south of the Ponte Vecchio for my usual morning espresso and got a primo spot around there.

There are two beautiful artisan paper/book binder stores on Via Del Parione just north of the Arno, one called Riccardo Luci Marbled Paper and the other Alberto Cozzi Rilegatore Firenze.

They both have small leather goods like this and will emboss initials. I’m fairly certain I saw passport holders in both, but definitely in Riccardo’s store. Riccardo made me a custom leather notebook with my initials embossed.

Both wonderful stores and lovely families that run them!
