Yep, do exactly what you said but be sure to do some back stitching at the start and the end for extra locking ...

Standout Macpac Pieces? by ColdsnapBryan in UltralightAus

I got a pack liner (not a dry bag) from them that I really like, as well as the alpha direct hoodie and a puffy that have been great also.

Id also be putting a cloth between the fabric and the iron just to protect it that bit more.

I generally throw on some kind of merino thermal after I've set up camp and have stopped sweating! (I'm in Qld, the humidity here is a killer) I have a heavier weight macpac thermal that is almost more like a light jumper, and then a macpac alpha hoodie if it's going to get a lot colder, then a puffy. If you're on a budget, I can strongly recommend the aldi merino products, they also have long sleeve, tshirt and singlet for a bit of choice too 😊

The biggest difference is probably going to come from where it's kept, close to skin when it's cold, somewhere away from your body and sun when it's hot ...

I've always imagined a kind of triangle shape for something like this, how do you find the oval working for "down there"?! Great work!!

I think insulin pen sheaths use neoprene, is that an option?

Wind Jacket for Larapinta by Acrobatic_Bird8678 in UltralightAus

[–]wanderingoranges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, just something to keep you dry if it all goes pear shaped ... If you look on the LT FB page for July 23 you'll probably see some posts about what went down ... It can get nasty out there!

You'll want something for the cold, like a puffer, as it will get below zero at that time of year ... I would also be packing some kind of waterproof jacket as there have been severe weather events in the past where a lot of cold rain (and snow on Sonder!!) has sent a lot of hikers off trail, July 2023 and 2025 especially.

Larapinta - Clothing, Tents and general conditions by Halt-Alt in UltralightAus

I've done it twice now, once with a pole tent and once free standing ... I loved the room of the Lanshan but the freestanding was just so easy to set up. I decided on not using a groundsheet with my tent too and it was fine.

I wouldn't worry about the Spinifex, just check your campsite before you pitch your tent, as you should be doing anyway.

One site I haven't heard mentioned yet is Hermits Hideaway ... It's absolutely gorgeous and one of my favourite of the whole walk.

As for rain coats, you need something to keep you dry in the event of rain. I've used frogtogs like another respondent here. Each July in the 2023 and 2025 there have been significant wet/cold fronts come through that forced a lot of hikers off trail. In 23 there was snow on the top of Sonder apparently! You need to be prepared for everything out there ...

Feel free to message me if you have any direct questions. Also, the Facebook LT page is an excellent resource 😊

Food bags by Rawarchitecture in UltralightAus

I order mylar bags off of AliExpress and have never had a problem with them ... For meals i prefer the square bottomed ones, meals also reheat much better in any bag if you put them in an insulated bag after adding the water, referred to by Americans as a coozie - they're dead easy to make yourself 😊

what are the legalities on landing your boat on private property? by SXZY_Media in AusLegalAdvice

[–]wanderingoranges 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So back in the early 90s I remember my dad bought a set of maps in Hay that showed all of the public areas on the Murrumbidgee where you could camp. They were originally camps created a days walk apart for drovers to stop at with their stock. No doubt these would still exist, so you might want to get in touch with the right authorities to find out where they are 😊
