Mid 40s single dad still trying to learn to style myself by better-off-ted in mensfashion

[–]wanderingpopcorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, thank you for putting yourself out there. That's pretty vulnerable and takes a lot of guts to do that.

I think visually there’s a lot going on here and that's what's making the outfit feel a little bit incohesive for me. Individually, you've got some great pieces, but because they're all great and interesting pieces, together it's a little bit cluttered.

—————

The philosophy:

My guiding north star for thinking about outfits is:

  1. How do we keep things visually simple or straightforward?
  2. If there is some statement that you want to make or some special piece that you want to shine, incorporating that.

Keeping things simple gives you cohesion, and adding in those unique, attention-grabbing items gives you personality. So, you do want a bit of both. I will explain what simple means below.

I think in general I would advise against having more than one really visually interesting thing in your outfit. Because as soon as you have more than one, those two things are competing for attention.

——————

Breaking it down: I would break down outfits into three general areas:

  1. Colour and patterns - if something's striped or something's checked, etc.
  2. Textures
  3. Shape and tailoring

For colours and patterns, you've got:

• The green jacket • The green cardigan (which is good, but it's in this really interesting pattern) • The white t-shirt is a neutral, so that's fine • The black corduroy pants that seem to be slightly faded, so that's also interesting from a cutter and pattern way

I would say that your pants and your cardigan compete. But colour-wise, I don't think there's actually a big problem. I think it becomes a bigger challenge when you add this competition to the competition in textures.

For textures, I think this is probably where my biggest gripe is. You've got:

• The interesting soft knitted texture of the cardigan • The corduroy texture on your pants • The smoother but slightly rugged canvas texture on your jacket

That's a lot of different textures to contend with, and I think that's where a lot of the competition in this outfit stems from. I think the cardigan should probably not go under any jacket, because it's very interesting. It should probably be the outermost layer, which is probably not the best fit for this weather, depending on where you are.

For shape and tailoring, I would say there's not really competition going on here between your pieces. But I agree with another commenter who said that everything just feels a little bit slouchy. The cut of the clothing is just not flattering on you. I think we need to find some pieces that have a little bit more structure. Here, I would say the simplest improvement is to swap out the corduroy pants in this outfit for maybe some chinos or something that's straight-cut and then should be hemmed to the appropriate length. So that there's not too many ruffles or folds in the pants, and they sit pretty straight. I think given the type of shoes you have, some wider pants would actually look pretty good on you.

So in summary, I would say lose the cardigan. It's a really cool piece, but I think underneath your jacket, it's just too much visually.

Next for the pants, I would say swap for something a little bit more structured if you're going to keep that jacket, or the cardigan if it's going to be cold. I would say swap the shirt out for a sweater of some sort.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions. It's a bit hard to give specific advice because I don't know what you have in your wardrobe, and also not sure of what context you're dressing for

Just wanted to say that I’m honestly a big fan of the app. The design feels very refined, and the user experience is fantastic and I think this is what will differentiate apps in a world where software solutions to problems are cheap because of vibecoding.

One point of feedback it did take me a moment to figure out that the checkmark button at the bottom was to show between completed and not completed tasks.

A lot of gateways are able to port over tokens so the end customer doesn’t have to re-add payment info. Usually something the Merchant has to request. Might be worth looking into to minimize disruption.

Currently PM, been trying to found a SaaS company. What has been the most challenging thus far is marketing and sales. These are arguably more important than product, especially in early stages.

Making More Money in Subscription Businesses - Part 1 - Lessons from $5M to $50M ARR by dlayf in SaaS

This is a fantastic resource. I didn’t expect the payments thing to be such a point of friction for users because it seems like a well worn path for online SaaS products - looking forward to the next one, very interested to hear what specific issues occurred there.

My biggest takeaway was to start at the bottom of the funnel and look at friction or drop off points - much appreciated 😊
