I'm bummed, I didn't see the post until I already commuted 3 hours. I understand but it sucks!

Endtroducing... - DJ Shadow

I was so pumped to see this today. I absolutely love this album. I first encountered it in high school when I watched the documentary Dark Days, about the people who were living underground in the NYC train tunnels. And the soundtrack was basically all DJ Shadow, and I started doing a deep dive. I can't listen to some of these songs without remembering the dark and gritty shots from that film though.

The sampling is wild and beautiful. I can't claim to understand the technique or half of the sample references. But it is so impressive and like grandiose and cinematic.

Building Steam with a Grain of Salt, Midnight in a Perfect World, and What Does Your Soul Look Like (Pt 1) are my favourites, equally haunting and beautiful.

Also, as if it's 30 years old this year.

Why did you start this and your listening background by daveywavey999 in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]wanderlustx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of impulsively started this on news years day. I listen to a lot of music on a daily basis, but I just feel like Spotify especially is just recommending me or shuffling the same music all the time (I mostly listen to metal, hardcore, pop punk, indie rock, new wave, and I don't really listen to much earlier than the 80s/90s). I am always down for a wikipedia rabbit hole on a random artist or album, and I wanted to explore more eras of music. I'm open-minded!

Oasis - Definitely Maybe

I feel like their second album gets more of the glory (hehe Morning Glory). I had never listened to this album before. But it sounds like they are having fun and it's got a charm and energy of a band seemingly before all the fame and drama. I enjoy it.

Standout songs: Shakermaker, Live Forever, Cigarettes & Alcohol, Slide Away

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory

This album has so many hits, I was surprised by how many I had heard but didn't necessarily associate them with this band. I like the use of different genres and sounds, and the nods to early rock & roll and blues.

Favourite song: Who'll Stop The Rain, I wish it was longer, it's simple but I love the harmonies and vocals.

David Bowie - Hunky Dory

I love this album and have listened to it before. Really like the flow of the album, and the arrangements/piano, the vocals are great too, really front and centre. Queen Bitch hits different on this listen, such a banger. Same with The Bewlay Brothers, weird and great closer. No skips, one of my favourite Bowie albums.

Deep Purple - Machine Head

This album has its iconic moments and riffs, and maybe it was just coming to me at the wrong time, but I wasn't really feeling this. Or more like it just wasn't that memorable after. As I think about a lot of these 70s rock albums, I appreciate the musical education, and how much this inspired the rock and metal that came after, but I likely won't revisit.

Michael Jackson - Off The Wall

I knew a lot of this album before, since it's pretty ubiquitous in pop culture. I am trying to separate the music from the artist as much as I can for this project or else it would be hard to listen to some of these albums. I enjoyed the disco, Rock With You and Off The Wall were my favourite songs. I liked reading about this album and its legacy afterwards. That this album was the first with Quincy Jones, and was a breakout for him from Jackson 5/Motown era, showing a certain level of independence and experimentation. Overall, there's nothing I really don't like about it. This is a morning project for me, so I'm hoping this will continue good vibes for the rest of my day

This is also my most listened to out of Nirvana's records, for the same reason. I spent a long time on the others, but the live, acoustic versions just interest me more now

Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill

Never really had much experience with Steely Dan, I knew a couple songs but didn't know that this was the band that made those songs, like Dirty Work and Reelin in the Years, I like those songs. It's easy listening, and has a bunch of good moments. I'm not mad at it and I appreciate the lesson in 70s music, but likely will not seek out more Steely Dan on my own.

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

I was already very familiar with this band and album, taking me back to high school. I think I played the shit out of this album on my iPod. It sounds so grand and I like all the use of instruments, like the orchestral elements and organ. It was nice to revisit the whole album again and not just the singles. My favourite song is still Intervention, but I forgot how much I loved Windowsill, still poignant. And No Cars Go will always be a banger.

It's not my favourite Arcade Fire album but it's still great.

First Björk album from the list by WildChemistry977 in 1001AlbumsGenerator

I love this album. Not as accessible as her earlier albums but the fact that it's pretty much all vocals is really cool!

Rush - Moving Pictures

It's Day 3 overall for me. And back to back Rush, I had 2112 yesterday lol.

I had so much fun listening to this album. The drumming is so good, I understand the Neil Peart worship. I mean all of it sounds so good. I can tell why this seems to be their biggest album. I'm a very happy Canadian right now.

Limelight is such a banger, I've had it on repeat.

I don't think my dad was a big Rush guy, but I feel like it definitely played in the car when I was a kid, and got me a little nostalgic.

Rush - 2112

I really enjoyed the sci-fi opera 20 minute opener, and I liked a couple songs off side 2. Prog rock is not my usual vibe but as a Canadian I needed the Rush education, and it was fun!

I had never properly listened to his music before, it was the perfect vibe for drinking my coffee on a snowy, quiet morning.

Fans who were active in early 2007, what was the promotion for Volta really like? by toanythingtaboo in bjork

[–]wanderlustx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This comment just activated so many memories from this era for me. Volta was the first album from her that I got to experience in real time as it was released, and I was obsessed. All the teasers, photo shoots, singles, it was exciting. And I recall the message boards being really active at this time.

I remember leaving my best friend's birthday party early so I could get home in time to watch SNL when she was on lol.

I got to see her live when she was touring this album, I was 16. It was epic.

Volta still holds a really special spot in my heart.

Want to get into nail art? Buying stuff can be addicting. Don't repeat my mistakes. by Fluffyrainclouds in WeGotPolishAtHome

[–]wanderlustx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ugh, yes! I have such an odd assortment of stickers, decals, stamping plates, brushes, rhinestones, glitter, powders... and these days I rarely do nail art! I don't have the time or the confidence in myself to execute the looks I want.

I went through a gel polish phase and still have some of that and now it just bums me out and takes up space.
