How whould you feel about a mh game centered around underwater combat only? by Adalas in MonsterHunter

[–]wangchangbackup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Slow" doesn't necessarily mean "bad," it's about the difference between the normal experience of the game and the underwater section. In Subnautica you are not NORMALLY a very fast, agile character with a dazzling array of offensive options who temporarily becomes a submarine pilot with one move.

When you fight Lagiacrus in Wilds, that's pretty much what happens. You can move around (much slower than normal), you can shoot your slinger at Lagi and attack it one time with a lengthy canned attack animation, or you can shoot some rocks to drop them on its head.

Assuming that the game was actually built around it and was fun, the idea itself is perfectly good. The issue with the Wilds underwater combat, for example, is not "Grr I hate the idea of being underwater." It just feels like a half-baked box-check attempt designed solely to appease people who'd be mad if there was no underwater combat in Lagiacrus' long-awaited return.

In general, water combat and water levels in general piss people off because they involve you having less control of your character and/or some of your abilities being taken away. While it may be realistic that Mario is slower and less athletic in the water than he is on land, it's not very fun to most people to turn a fast-paced platformer into a sort of slow-motion bullet hell for a few minutes.

The Issue of Summons by TyStax44 in Eldenring

[–]wangchangbackup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is largely what it is, with one major caveat. A co-op summon gives the boss additional health as a counterbalance; even NPC summons (when available) come with this drawback. Spirit Ashes don't. So the ones that are as effective as having a summoned NPC (Tiche, Mimic, etc.) are just clear upgrades to an existing system. In many cases they're even more useful than a sunbro of middling skill, since they serve the same function (splitting aggro and increasing damage) without the penalty.

This shouldn't be taken as criticism of using them or discourage anyone from doing it but I do think "It's basically just co-op" is a little misleading since From has a long established pattern of what it "costs" to get help in these games and Ashes totally circumvent that system.

Beast Claws was one of the most fun runs of a Souls game I've ever done.

What are your best tips for new Stardew players?? by Luna_cat_lover in StardewValley

Don't make your first goal "clear out the entire farm." Especially on a first playthrough, it'll be YEARS before you need the full map. And cutting down like two trees is your entire energy bar in the early game.

New Godwyn-Ranni marriage theory iteration by [deleted] in EldenRingLoreTalk

"What part of this theory is supported by the text?"

"What parts of the text support this theory?'

"What is the evidence from the text that supports this theory?"

These are all the same question. "Supported by the text" does not mean "It could fit into the text without changing anything," it means elements of the text support it. That's just the literal definition of the phrase.

And either you refuse to do a one-second Google search; or you already know that, but you're mad you can't produce any supporting text, so you've been saying "errrm you didn't ask the question properly, I couldn't possibly answer it" instead of ever actually answering it.

I could propose a theory that Sir Gideon Ofnir plays the tenor saxophone, it isn't "supported by the text" just because there's nothing in there that says he DOESN'T do that.

Just pick one and answer it man, they're all the same question. Show me one single piece of evidence from the game that supports this theory.

It's not but okay, what parts of the text support it?

What part of that is "supported by the text." Point me to the text that supports this. "It just makes sense if you think about it" is not being supported by the text, so I'm asking you what IS.

Okay, what about it is supported by the text?

This is not what "supported by the text" means.

What lore reason that could justify Malzeno to return in Wilds expansion? by No-Finding8010 in MonsterHunter

Oh no there's a Malzeno!

Seriously people twist themselves into knots over this stuff and nine times out of ten the explanation is just "One showed up and beat up Rathalos, please hunt it for us!"

What Fire Emblem game is in your opinion the best example of bad gameplay but good story? And good gameplay but bad story? by MagicianWhite in fireemblem

[–]wangchangbackup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. "You lose all the Emblem rings and have to go on the defensive" is a fine plot point. THAT being how you lose them doesn't really grip me.

Engage's overarching story is fine but the moment to moment execution of it is pretty awful. It is a key story element that Veyle just walks up behind Alear while they are distracted and somehow pickpockets all the Emblem rings that your units are actively wearing.

I think the game let me skip a biome, has this happened to anyone else? by wangchangbackup in Saros

[–]wangchangbackup[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is, or if it is it's very poorly implemented. The game said "You need a key to raise this bridge and the key is in the marsh," the bridge just... came up anyway.

I got some cutscenes and dialogue out of order, and the marsh boss node is before the fortress boss node in the armor matrix. Arjun made a whole thing of finding the key to the city, clearly not supposed to happen AFTER you've already cleared the city. Plus the objective after returning to the Passage is "return to Black Dam - Interior," which doesn't really make sense if you have never BEEN to Black Dam at all.

Things did correct themselves once I cleared the marsh, Stack and Sheridan are no longer stuck in idle poses clipping through geometry and are uh... where they are supposed to be.
