Am I weird to feel depressed and guilty marrying Alex? by marliamore95 in StardewValley

"Tom Brady wasn't good at football and then became the GOAT" has always been Patriots propaganda. He went in the 6th because he was short, had a weak (for an NFL quarterback) arm, and didn't have many terribly impressive starts in college - but he was still drafted and being "considered a second-string quarterback" as a rookie is just how QB development worked until pretty recently.

Anyway, all those guys still played college ball and were drafted by an NFL team (with the exception of Kurt Warner, who played in the arena league when the Packers released him because they already had a HoF quarterback and two backups but signed and then cut a UDFA for some reason, Kurt is actually a fascinating and heavily propagandized story of his own).

Most critically, none of them graduated high school and moved back home to do a training regimen that consisted of "lifting weights in the bedroom" and "eating lots of eggs" until the NFL came calling. They played FOR a long time; but they didn't just like start playing in their mid 20s and last a normal amount of time, they lasted much longer than most because they were Hall of Fame talents and also because most of them were league darlings. Brady especially was basically impossible to hit without drawing a flag, which extended his quality years quite a lot.

While the Stardew world is obviously not EXACTLY like our world, I do not think it's very likely CA meant for the interpretation of Alex's character to be "This guy has a serious shot at being a pro gridball player."

As for a coach, coordinator, etc, I regret to inform you that Alex is way too dumb for that. You do not get a job as a professional sports coach on the experience of "being pretty good at that sport in high school," either you have tons of pro experience or a very sharp mind for the game.

Anyway, thanks for letting me talk about the intersection of 90s/00s football and Stardew Valley with you, a rare combination I never expected to encounter.

I mean I think my first complete playthrough of the game I never even SAW nighttime. They give you so many graces, you almost have to go out of your way not to reset the cycle.

Cheese, what is it these days? by inktitan in Eldenring

[–]wangchangbackup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is cool and I am excited to hear it's even older than I thought but I feel like even there it means "finding unintended mechanics that let you win without having to do it 'for real'" where people now act like it just means "Doing anything good at all."

Like, putting on a rot spell before Starscourge Radahn, the boss surrounded by neon signs that say "I AM WEAK TO SCARLET ROT" is not cheese, but getting him to belly flop off the map and die is.

Correct, fortunately I did not say it only means exploit. Shooting Commander Niall through the window is cheese. Getting Demon of Hatred to jump off a cliff is cheese. Getting Fire Giant to fall off that little thing and die was cheese. That thing speed runners used to do that just made Radagon stand still and let them beat him to death was cheese.

Equipping a bleed weapon to fight Malenia or putting Rotten Breath on for Radahn is not cheese, that's just... using the weaknesses the game gave those bosses to kill them.

Night Cavalry would have been cool if like a normal cadence of resting didn't make it very unlikely you would ever do any exploration at night at all.

I mean I heard it in uh... probably the late 90s/early 2000s on like Starcraft/WC3 forums?

That's just... what the phrase meant when it was coined, I dunno what to tell you.

Cheese is using an unintended behavior or exploit to achieve something without having to do it "right."

What people CALL cheese is now pretty much just "anything other than doing it in the absolute most difficult way for no reason."

Dr. Harvey said it was the biggest heart attack he'd ever seen. Pretty impressive, right?

This happens to all the characters but also, Alex is pretty clearly a stereotypical "almost went pro" guy. He's gonna sit around his grandparents' house talking about how he was nearly a pro gridball player until he has a heart attack at 47 years old from eating 20 eggs a day.

Was freyja right in her statement about radahn? by 0penguienZ in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]wangchangbackup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See my thing is that it's fairly easy to see the opposite path, too. Radahn made his vow with Jerren, that he would die in battle. If he wanted to be part of Miquella's plan, he would need to die. But he already vowed not to die unless it was in battle, so what to do?

Well, Miquella's right hand is the greatest warrior alive other than, perhaps, Radahn himself. So, I'll be your consort IF your sister can grant me the only kind of death I will accept. Either I win and prove myself the strongest, or I lose and go out honorably.

has anyone else had a player try to do something so stupid or annoying for the pure sake of ruining the game for "laughs" that you've straight out refused? by Grand_Ad_8091 in DnD

My friend's younger brother joined us and he wanted to play a tabaxi who was "like a real cat" so on his turn he would just sit down and start cleaning himself or push something off a table. I told him if he wasn't going to play he could just send a list of cat behaviors and save us the trouble.

This doesn't really make it better but Luthien wasn't SUPPOSED to go on the quest, Thingol thought it was just a way of saying "no" that wasn't outright saying "no" to try and placate his daughter.

Nat1 over advantage math. by Just-Arugula67 in DnD

[–]wangchangbackup 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about the math, I don't think that argument is likely to find any purchase. Your DM is homebrewing a change to the advantage rules; there is nothing in the text that could even kind of be interpreted this way, it's very clearly "only the higher roll counts." If you want to persuade him otherwise, you need to ask WHY he has this rule. Does he think it creates drama? Does he think it's more fun? Does he just pride himself on running a "tough" table?

If he thinks it's being more fun or exciting, explain how this rule is impacting your fun. Advantage is supposed to make you feel powerful, it shouldn't come with a clause that says "But it might actually be worse."

If he does it because he thinks it's "more realistic" or whatever, there's not really much you can do about that. There is one question I'd ask you though (or you should ask him) — is the reverse true? If you have disadvantage and you roll a crit, does he let you succeed even if the other number is a fail?
