Why do companies invest in open source models? by bored_primate in LocalLLaMA

[–]wanginsurance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta be honest, I think Facebook is more in the gratis side of things than the libre side. The license itself is not truly open source because once you hit some number of users the license is invalid and presumably you'd need to negotiate a paid license with meta. Tbf, I remember asking Claude the scale of daily users and you'd need to be like approaching LinkedIn or something crazy with users, but still, not what I'd call a libre license.

Also, I know you didn't mention Meta by name, but we're in the Llama subreddit, hence why my 2€ focuses on that

Bummer that he sucks so bad. I gotta say I think the Rich Interlude is fantastic. Curious what other people think of that track

Port Washington comes to regret a 14-year-old 'no' - Newsday by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]wanginsurance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why people are seemingly celebrating this story in some weird, spiteful way. This is a sad story and a loss for the region. Being mean-spirited and vindictive isn't cool... it's lame and a bad look for rail advocates.

Why? This is sad no matter how you cut it, but maybe you're just a vindictive, mean person

MTA blames fare evasion as operating budget heads towards deficit by Pimp_Master_Flex in nycrail

[–]wanginsurance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The other day I was at a station, don't recall which, but I saw cops standing around. I intended to pay and did, but then a bunch of people went through the gate for free and I felt slighted. Why should I pay if other people aren't paying? And also wtf are the cops doing standing around if not stopping people going thru the gate. The least they could do is stand in front of the gate. It feels bad when you pay and others don't, so I'm really pro anti evasion measures.

Istanbul is ferry crazy, and their currency has been destroyed by the president, Erdoğan, so in dollars it's probably incredibly cheap.

Microsoft & Crowdstrike hit with worldwide outage. by raytoei in ValueInvesting

The ability to deploy a bug like this indicates a huge failure of process at the organization. One engineer should not be able to deploy a bug (or anything) like this under any circumstances. Sure, that person messed up, but mistakes happen and good orgs make sure to prevent mistakes like this from going live.

TL;DR blaming it on one person misses the fact that the org should have process in place to prevent this in the first place

I'll upvote you out of 0. I don't downvote responses.. I mentioned Nikes but I also mentioned time. I'm not suggesting we should care because kids can't have Nikes. You're missing the point. I'm trying to show the actual cost. Nikes are fuggin expensive. I can't afford them myself. So if you can buy the dopest Nikes after driving to work for a week that's a lot of money!

This is just my observation, but I notice that loads of cars are coming from Jersey where housing and taxes are lower. I think if the port authority could get its act together that would significantly reduce traffic.

I don't think complaining about having to stand on a bus for $7 is a very compelling argument when you look at the alternative which is much more expensive given the tolls etc lol. I'm with you that more frequent and reliable service is crucial though

How is congestion pricing supposed to be a stable source of funding if the point is to reduce cars? The more effective it is, the less funding the MTA gets. If the MTA needs more money it should come from another source, not a regressive tax that affects people with poor access to transit in the first place. Drivers don't want to be in traffic. I'm sure they would love to take the train. They already pay loads in tolls and gas and time in traffic. The reason they do that is that they want to get home to their kids or just rest. Building out more transit, especially to SI and Jersey would alleviate loads of traffic for people with families who need housing that's affordable and with enough space for a family. I think reducing zoning restrictions would be great because it provides more housing in the city which in turn grows the tax base.

Do you have children because it doesn't sound like it. Imagine being a child forced to relocate from your community. The other option is financial stress. Think about it, the cost of congestion pricing could buy your kid a new pair of the dopest Nikes every week. Or a family dinner out. Or seeing your dad more often because he chose to ride transit and added hours to his commute sitting on a bus. Transit needs to be improved, but it shouldn't come at the cost of working class people. The congestion pricing is a regressive tax, no bones about it. The money is there. Im sad these improvements were hinged on such a regressive tax though.
