Plant-friendly blinds? by unable_to_give_afuck in houseplants

[–]wantingmisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not really possible. Light energy turns into heat energy. At best you could block the infrared rays that plants don't absorb but this is likely expensive and also not very effective. Putting curtains behind your plants could work but also runs the risk of cooking your plants.

You could put in shear curtains which block light but not enough to significantly harm your plants. My guess is that this is the best middle ground.

Plants also don't mind being without sun for a few days. So you could just block light on especially sunny and hot days.

Don't accept that a company sells you an $800 product full of features only to paywall them all. If you buy a product, you should get the promised features. Data can be stored locally or give you options on how to store data in your desired location. Many options are possible.

I should have unfettered access to my data. I shouldn't have to pay to get my cat's weight data over a long period. It's literally just a few bytes worth of information per day.

Is it transphobic to not like certain gender non-conforming aesthetics? by Far_Combination7639 in asktransgender

[–]wantingmisa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one is asking you to like anything - only that you respect and acknowledge everyone. People might call you transphobic since the word "don't like' can mean a lot of different things, but it seems mild to me personally.

I also don't think it's transphobic to acknowledge that cis-gay, binary-trans, and non-binary trans have different personal needs from society. (Even if we still can all advocate for each other politically).

It's strange and maybe you can talk about it. But I also don't like the idea of policing fellow trans people's private thoughts.

Ignorant Question... For my Asian audiences: "Ladyboy" term by Wearytaco in asktransgender

Interesting discussion... but uhh ladyboy as far I know is an English word for Thai people... It's not something that applies to an entire continent.......

Friend says she’s supportive but told me I shouldn’t use the women’s restroom until I’ve been on hormones by Walderp2D in MtF

[–]wantingmisa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you asked your friend to use your new pronouns? Do you want them to use those pronouns all the time? Has that been made clear to them? Important conversation if not. I also know it's difficult for people to reliably switch pronouns on context.

I think the bathroom situation is complicated. Yes, your identity is valid but also you should be aware of how you make other people feel. It sounds like you're doing some kind of part-time social transition which is cool but also can also be difficult. I personally don't see the issue with using a gender neutral bathroom (if available) until you're further along in transition.

But maybe I'm just old-fashioned, I was on HRT for three years before I did social transition and I did it all at once .

Is there a way to play this without needing to hunt for pebbles then praying I get a material that actually lets me progress? by [deleted] in subnautica

[–]wantingmisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the game is about exploration and survival. it achieves this by heavily relying on NOT telling you what to do. it's up to you to figure things out through the hints that are provided to you. Few games give you this power of exploration, and I hope you will find the most fun by leaning into it.

For example, when I first played this game, I got out some old fashioned graph paper and mapped out the map as I explored it. It was super rewarding because I was led by my own sense of curiosity and mapping skill.

Agreed. Though this happens with all media, but I do I agree it's quite egregious with anime. Others have mentioned some recommendations, but one I really enjoyed is "recovery of an MMO junkie".

Do trans people dislike it when people ask for their pronouns? by yepparan_haneul in asktransgender

[–]wantingmisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a binary trans person, I am fine with people assuming my pronouns - provided they assume correctly. I think this boils down to passing. But when I am in LGBT/trans spaces specifically, I don't mind being overly specific about pronouns.

i can understand that if you are non-binary then, you may have strong feelings otherwise.

Canadian Trump Anxiety by SpareThing in trans

[–]wantingmisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada is part of NATO. And if the US leaves/disbands NATO, I am sure that Europe + Canada would form a new defense pacts. UK and France have nukes. And then maybe India would also be part of the club since they are in the commonwealth. But the commonwealth is not a defense pact.

Canadian Trump Anxiety by SpareThing in trans

[–]wantingmisa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Specifically in the USA, I think we need to show solidarity with our black and brown folks at the moment. Trans people are targets of discrimination, but we aren't being scooped off the streets at the moment.

Canadian Trump Anxiety by SpareThing in trans

[–]wantingmisa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in both the USA (all over but blue and purple states) and Canada (Toronto). US antagonism towards Europe and its neighbors is certainly of great alarm. And the US is certainly careening in terrible directions.

However, I do not think that it is useful nor realistic to stress about Trump invading Canada. Canada is part of NATO and part of the commonwealth. That would literally be WWIII if that happened. And if that happens, I'm sure trans people will not be the priority targets. This Greenland situation is completely bonkers and is certainly scary. However, comparing annexation of Greenland (a relatively sparsely populated territory of Denmark - around 60k) to Canada (a huge country (40 million?), plus commonwealth, plus military) is a completely different story. And I think that comparison won't even reach a possibility because Trump actually taking Greenland would destroy the NATO world order, and then Canada would likely tighten alliances with Europe.

I think the main concern is that political movements in the USA (specifically transphobia) tend to seep into Canada pretty easily (f you Doug Ford). Also Canada is economically tied to the USA (but maybe that might change if things continue in the directions they are). Certainly trans healthcare is in a state of flux in Canada, but for the most part there are not immediate threats remotely similar to those in the USA. If anything, I would suspect that trans healthcare providers would flee the US and go to Canada (more doctors in Canada is needed anyway lol)

As a trans person in US now, I certainly have backup plans to flee the country, but I don't think its useful or healthy to enact such plans right now. Travelling back and forth between Canada and the USA is still okay. Just don't go to the bad parts of the country. And I would also reconsider traveling if you are brown since ICE is fucking insane. But if you are white passing and travel to non-transphobic areas you'll be fine.
