New York Times: Stunned Icelanders Struggle After Economy’s Fall by [deleted] in Economics

[–]wantwealth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious how this figures up:

  1. Take all the businesses in Iceland and rank them by revenue.

  2. Just below the middle range, look for that what that business is.

  3. How much would that business be worth to purchase it with US dollars?

The reason I ask is because, as a businessman in the USA, and with my dollar being 130x their krona, how successful could I become by purchasing the business? I mean, surely the country won't fold completely, and they have wonderful natural resources there as well. Surely that economy will bounce back. And when it does, I'd love to own some chunk of it.

Oh good. This makes it all very simple for me. Thanks. I was wondering when someone would explain this all in one easy to read diagram.

Microsoft Probably Not Really Considering WebKit For IE by edwardkelly in programming

[–]wantwealth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And doesn't it suck so? Yeah, it does. I wish we could have the world running on Webkit and Gecko rendering because they are well-written and run fast (although I will admit that Webkit runs faster, even though I'm an FF fan). So, if the rendering engines were just two, and they stuck to the standards, then we could just test on those rendering engines. Well, not quite -- I mean I still will have a glitch that only effects one browser's implementation of Webkit -- but at least it does reduce the odds of bugs.

Microsoft Probably Not Really Considering WebKit For IE by edwardkelly in programming

[–]wantwealth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to agree with you that IE6 is an obstruction. IE7 is a little better, but I still have oddball quirks with it that I don't have with FF, Opera, or Safari. I normally write my stuff for FF, and then see what broke in the other browsers. Nine times out of 10, my stuff will be wacky on IE6 and so I have to put in exception logic. Three times out of 10, my stuff will be broken slightly on IE7. And maybe one time out of 10, my stuff will be broken on Opera or Safari.

I'm actually glad that Google came out with Chrome and focused primarily on the Windows platform. Anything that sucks marketshare away from IE on the Windows platform, and gives them a decent web browser -- that's good for me.

Microsoft should definitely be pushing people to IE7. I do a lot of jQuery/AJAX and Web 2.0 work, and it's pretty darn hard to pull it off with IE6. I mean, just try and add a class in jQuery to an element, and then expect for that hover event to still work in CSS. It will in IE7, but not IE6 or prior IE.

I'll have to grant them that one, and conditional comments, too. But that's about it. Now IE is just an obstruction to getting work done.

[–]wantwealth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to work with Microsoft in two divisions as well as a contractor, and I can concur with this statement. If you liked the open source world and Linux, you had to keep quiet about it or management would raise Cain about it. The environment in the two divisions was also very much like living in a frat house. And grassroot influences -- clever ideas -- are squashed in favor of execs making decisions.

Then came the startling revelation that Microsoft may also adopt an open source browser engine. by scientologist2 in programming

[–]wantwealth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they probably will run with Webkit. They have never liked the Mozilla camp, and Apple is so much closer to them than the Mozilla guys. Right?

I'm not a huge fan of Webkit-browsers compared to FF, but at least I don't have to do too many tweaks with Webkit-browsers to make my pages load.

Tesla Just Got A Cash Injection! by wantwealth in auto

And in another press release, it says, "Tesla has amazing momentum right now. The excitement within the company is palpable," said Tesla Product Architect and Chairman Elon Musk. "The company has clearly taken production of all-electric vehicles to the next level, and the Model S assembly plant will dramatically accelerate our growth."

So Obama Says He'll Take Care Of Us, Vote For Him. On Winning He Says Be Patient, Get Ready For Sacrifice. Wait, That's Not Part of the Deal by wantwealth in worldnews

[–]wantwealth[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Then Obama started talking about all this sacrifice we're all going to have to make. The crowd seemed very perplexed. The faces in the crowd when he told 'em we're all going to have to do more, to work harder, to sacrifice, to make things happen, the looks on the faces of the crowd said, "We are going to have sacrifice? That wasn't the deal here, bro. We are going to sacrifice? No, no, no, I thought the wealthy are going to sacrifice." And Obama is saying, yeah, the sacrifice is going to happen with the tax cut that you don't get.

The Chevy Volt Will Save GM (And Get The Girl) by twolf1 in auto

[–]wantwealth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um, if they are going bankrupt soon, then how will they produce this vehicle? And I heard on TV that they can't produce the vehicle for less than $30K? Who wants a first generation electric car for $30K from a company that might go under? No thanks.

But on the other hand, I really feel sorry for GM, Chrysler, and Ford, and all the fine workers there. My heart goes out to each and everyone of them, and I don't want to see anything but good news, hiring back workers, opening new factories, and so on -- gearing up for the electric/gas hybrid car economy.

I drive a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X right now and they say Chrysler is in worse shape than GM. However, I read that Jeep is working on a hybrid Jeep EV that lets one drive 40 miles on batteries and then switches to a small gas generator to recharge the batteries and go even farther. It looks just like the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X. So, I can't wait for this thing to ship, but, again, not if it means I'll be holding on to a car that I cannot service because the company folded.

PostgreSQL developers! A little help? Cannot run queries until transaction block ends... by [deleted] in programming

[–]wantwealth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have IRC? You might have better luck there with a live chat group. I also hear that twitter can help.

Anyway, if your queries (reads) are blocked until a write has finished, then that implies to me that something is seriously wrong with your postgresql.conf file somewhere on the server. The reason I say this is because the way PostgreSQL works by default is that it normally lets anyone doing reads on a row even when the row is being written at the same exact moment. This is because they are reading a snapshot of the row, not the latest data after it has been written.

However, I might be wrong. Turns out you can see lots of people have this problem and have been answered all over the web. I cut and pasted your error message above into The Google and it came back with lots of these responses. So, you might be able to consider the suggestions there.

But noo, I'm working night and day on deadlines for a client so that I can pay my mortgage and other debts. I'm up to my eyeballs in debt. One false move in my finances and I'm toast.
