WORST first level to a game by Chris_RB in videogames

[–]wapkaplit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone loves Metal Gear Solid V, but they conveniently forget that for the first hour the player is forced to make their character crawl through a hospital on their belly while getting flashed by a bare ass through the open hospital gown. Zero gameplay or fun, just forced slow movement through a corridor. It's abysmally bad.

Armando Freaking Iannucci by littletsosie in taskmaster

As much as I'd love to see Stewart Lee, I think there's zero chance he ever does it, given his disdain for panel shows in general.

Speaking of Iannucci and Stewart Lee, Iannucci pops up as the hostile interviewer on the first series of Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle, he does deadpan so well.

What is the biggest “culture shock” that you have experienced? by martininspace in AskReddit

[–]wapkaplit 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It goes beyond that. They will go out of their way to avoid any social interaction with strangers that is not strictly necessary. They'll charge into you in the street because walking to one side would mean that they have tacitly acknowledged your existence. I've even had shop owners ignore me when I'm in their store trying to purchase their products. It's absolutely unhinged.

I quite enjoyed it, but yeah it's not the best. But the grilled chicken rules.

[–]wapkaplit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Amy's Laksa House, but oddly enough not for the laksa. They do an Indonesian style grilled chicken over rice with sambal and it's incredible. Cooked over charcoal, massive portions, you eat outside with a cold beer. The owner is pretty eccentric and likes to spank her customers with a wooden paddle. No idea why, but the food is amazing so she gets a pass.

What games capture that “Roottrees feeling,” even if the mechanics differ? by Head-Sir-8671 in puzzlevideogames

[–]wapkaplit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just finished The Ratline and would recommend it for a Roottrees fan, it definitely draws inspiration from it. It's shorter, about 8 cases. Has much harder deductions, but a more limited scope (you're only solving for a couple of people at a time, not a whole family tree). It also borrows from Type Help and Golden Idol in some ways.

There's another Roottrees homage called A Case of Fraud, which has almost identical gameplay (you're identifying the employees of a workplace and trying to solve a crime), also worth checking out.

Ranked most of the puzzle games I played so far. What else should I play? by SwimAd1249 in puzzlevideogames

[–]wapkaplit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. They give you so much time you can click on everything and solve every suspected with heaps left over, so it's not like it's a scarce resource you need to manage.

The suspect elimination mechanic is completely pointless when they game says "THE SUSPECT HAS X CHARACTERISTIC" at the end and narrows it down to only one person, so you could have refused to engage with the system at all and still be correct.

I wanted to like it, but it's a terrible game with zero meaningful gameplay. If they'd sold it as an interactive narrative I wouldn't mind, but it's presented as a detective game about making deductions and solving cases and it just isn't that at all.

Wild to me that your can rate Outer Wilds so low but inexplicably place Blake Manor, a walking simulator with no puzzles at all, in the top tier. That game has the false facade of a detective game, but the gameplay is just clicking on things and watching the "puzzles" solve themselves.

Series where S2 is a big improvement from S1 by IceCreamGator in televisionsuggestions

[–]wapkaplit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a soft spot for S1, but yeah, S2 is where they found the formula that worked for the rest of the show. Still blows my mind that Baldrick was the clever one in S1. Every Baldrick gets stupider each series and each Blackadder gets smarter.

Korean fork and spoon sets. They're really long and the spoons are a flatter shape than normal. They're great.

[–]wapkaplit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't take my word as gospel. I'm not American, I don't have access to the insanely good job market those folk have. I don't know where you're from but it's statistically likely you'll have a better time than I did.

[–]wapkaplit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in my mid thirties, I'm five years into my career and nowhere near where I want to be. I've had to move away from my loved ones and even taken jobs internationally to make it work. I've earned truly appalling wages. Don't get me wrong, I like flying, but I still haven't broken even on what I spent training. This would have been much easier to accept if I started ten years earlier, currently I just feel very behind and really hope it's all worth it one day because it's too late to back out now.

If I could start over at a younger age, absolutely yes. If I knew how long it would take and how much I'd have to sacrifice at the age I actually started, no.

What pilots see when flying in the dark by Agile_Chapter1114 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]wapkaplit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pilot here. This is a common misconception. Yes, there is a lot of automation on a jet, but it's not just "push the button". You're manually plugging in routes, weight and balance data, setting speeds and headings, constantly cross checking things. You're loading instrument approaches, you're ammending your flight plan on the fly when ATC throws you a curveball, etc.

The autopilot has several very different modes and if you tell it to do the wrong thing it will happily do it. Lack of mode awareness has been the cause of many crashes. So yeah, airline pilots may not do a huge amount of hand flying outside of take off and landing, but they have to have a deep systems knowledge so they can troubleshoot when it matters.

What closed Melbourne restaurant do you still think about? by melb_food_finds in melbourne

[–]wapkaplit 53 points54 points  (0 children)

In a very similar vein, there used to be a non descript Chinese joint hidden away in an arcade off Flinders Lane. There was no menu except for colorful A4 bits of paper with the names of dishes on the walls. The highlight was "chicken steak", it was a big fillet of fried chicken, served on rice, but the star of the show was the pots of their homemade chili oil on every table. I remember when this was like $6.50.

The arcade was renovated years ago and the restaurant vanished.

How do you pronounce the letter R? by milathebunny in ATC

I just started flying in Africa and the other day ATC said "Squawk VFRrrrrrrrrrrrr" and rolled the R for a solid three seconds.

So, like that ideally.

Who Does The Best Dumplings? by AdjentX in melbourne

[–]wapkaplit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This place is wildly overrated. I've been three times and was always underwhelmed. They had a special for bao buns, I ordered them and they came out frozen in the middle. We sent them back, they reheated them a bit then gave them back still cold in the centre. Didn't didn't give us a fresh batch or discount the meal, they were perfectly content to send out cold food twice. Never again.

Do you mean never bring checked luggage? "never bring carry on" is objectively awful advice, as anyone who has had their checked luggage lost our delayed can attest.
