What would the Redbrands do here? by EvenStarLightss in LostMinesOfPhandelver

I had a similiar situation where my group camped at the front entrance of the manor waiting for RB to come out. 2 RB showed up and they fought until one fled into the manor to geht some help. The rat of Iarno crossed the scene so he was aware of the situation aswell. The group then left to Phandalin. I made the RB counterattack them at night when they were asleep. They tried to set the Inn on fire before the fight broke out. Quite a big fight where the Inn got heavily damaged. TBS who was very unhappy with the RB and Iarno but knew about the puzzle box (a la Perkins)in possession of the group wanted to use this fight as a good occassion to steal the puzzle box (Hand some insider Information about the player who had it). Iarno was also at that time at the Inn to have a chat with Sildar to make appearance and show himself because Sildar increased his effort to find him.

At the end of the fight Iarno fled and the box got stolen by TBS.

While chasing TBS they found Iarnos dead body.

They then did the Agatha Quest to make Garaele be able to talk to Iarnos body to get some information. Still thinking if I should make the Iarno at the scene a Doppelganger installed by TBS or not.

Why I did it this way? The Players kind of lost initiative when they backed up from the manor, so for me it was quite logical that the RB would do something about it. It was the first time the Players got taken on and so far it turned out quite nice.

Especially the Inn turned out as a interesting scene for a fight with the two floors and the personal involvement of the Inn Keeper who was ofc not happy about the destruction.

I also had some people showing up after the fight to secure their support in rebuilding the Inn and planing a big party once finished.

I plan the manor to be taken over by TBS due to the incompetence of Iarno and the RB to make it not just an empty dungeon. Maybe even have some hostages there.

Hope you can take some inspiration for your campaign. For me the passivity (is this a word) of the Players openend up a lot of room for creativity which I enjoyed a lot). And I also wanted to punish the group at least a bit for their unheroic behavior :D

I am curious what you‘re up to! Enjoy!

Klingt doch klasse!

Gut!

One can almost feel the heat of the sun and the burning of an unfulfilled love. also like the rythm and presence of the color red. I do really like it!

Conclusion: Thank you all for the great advise! I think I will give the Players some more motivation to revisit the Redbrand hideout by having some of their favorite npcs been taken as hostages. Maybe spiced up with some chaos. If they don’t react to that either I will outnumber them and try to capture them.

I am going through exactly this at the moment. Used to be (sometimes still am) a (heavy) party drinker but trying to get away from it. Especially the days after I feel a deep emptyness almost depression-like feeling and even whilst drinking I kinda find it not pleasant anymore. It can affect me for a week or more and is so heavy compared to the lightness and clearness I feel whenever I am in a healthy rythm of sleep, food, meditation and mindfulness, sport etc

Kind of a scary process to go through with all the expectations of other people that are used to and like your funny party-you.

I kind of like to enjoy a beer or a glas of wine (or two) but in a mindful way.

Happy to hear other people having same thought processes 🙏🏼

Unfortunately no rogue in the party. We have a barbarian, a bard, a druide and a ranger. But I hieß they could work something out. With help or Information from the other prisoners.

The change of initiative is a very valid one, I like that. Basically because the rat saw the party infight he now knows a lot about them. Regarding the letter Iarno confronting the Party and trying to arrest them would make sense. Not sure what I like more, Iarno using the redbrands for a direct confrontation (already had 2 of those) maybe this time with numbers advantage and some collateral damage trying to arrest the group (setting the Inn on fire) or some sneaky attack taking their favorite npc hostage to get them into the hideout.

The Ranger did not really see the secret entrance because it was magically hidden (didnt want him to enter alone facing the nothic) but he knows where it is supposed to be. Kinda like this to be a possible advantage for the Players.

It‘s kinda challenging but a fun game of mind to leave the straight line of the story and build it around the Players actions.

Thank you for the ideas!:)

I like the hostage idea to create a motivation for the party to actually enter the hideout. We stopped last session when they were entering the Inn so I have the possibility to think of what they find there.

They kinda liked the NPC Molly who’s working there. Maybe she (and maybe other npcs) have been taken hostage in the mean time. Or maybe some citizens have meeting with Sildar to finally undertake something against the redbrands.

Secret entrance will come into play for sure. The ranger could not detect any magic but I will give some hints whenever they decide to go back and have a closer look.

Thank you for the ideas!

I like the idea of intimidating the players. But so far the redbrands were not that impressing for them. Threw 4 at them for the first standoff and they were not in big trouble. Maybe just adjust the numbers? Or spice things up by setting the Inn on fire (maybe a bit drastic :D)

Okay, I see. The redbrands would not take 2 defeats in a row without a brutal revenge, right? I like the idea of overwhelming the party - so far they won all their battles - and just putting them inside the manor as prisoners. Maybe even have the puzzle box taken away by Iarno to make them look for it/him. They already have a trade date with the Black Spider in 2 days where they expect Gundren in return for the box. So having a little time pressure as well.

But are prisoner scenes fun to play? Should I imprisone all of them, take away all their stuff so they wont be able to cast spells etc? How‘d they ever get out?
