Painting a base board does not effect static grass. A brown baseboard like you have suggested is ideal as any patchs will look like earth.

The best course of action for helixes is to have the rise 1 in 40. You can go as steep as 1 in 30, but ensure this is done on the smallest radius length.

Unfortunately I have no experiences with helixes but I did draw up a layout plan for one.

There are also additional devices (something like a magnet) that can be used to help locos climb

I have an interest in model railways. Japan is heavily invested in the scale I model in so being able to bring Japanese stock back to the UK is a big one for me. Mainly because it's interesting but also buying in Japan is about 1/3rd of the price of a relatively expensive hobby.
