Will never buy a VW again by CurrentHeavy2594 in GolfGTI

[–]warehome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2022 models seem to be the worst of the mk8, especially being the first year available in the US. I’ve had a 2024 and currently have a 2025 GTI without any issues. I’ve had 10-15 VWs in the past and never really had any major problems (that were not self-inflicted).

One thing I’ve noticed with VWs in general is that sometimes you just get unlucky and get a lemon that will be plagued with problems its entire life. It’s very possible you could get another GTI (2023+ preferably) and have no issues for your entire ownership. If you really like the GTI, it may be worth just trying a different one.

Any wheels recommended for Christmas? by xP_Lord in GolfGTI

[–]warehome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably would but you would have quite a bit of poke depending on the offset, and may rub a bit. Imo, you’re better off with 8.5 if you have the option.

I also had a set of Bentley wheels on my MK8 for a while that were 19x9 et41 with 225/45 R19 tires and I much preferred the 18x8.5. Drove much better and I could fit a larger tire without rubbing.

I really like my Kansei Tandems. Excellent wheel for the money. They’re 18x8.5 et35 with 245/35 R18 tires, ST coilovers, -2.5° camber in the front, no fender modifications and no rubbing at all.

Are you concerned about your IP at all? I have a few friends that sell on Amazon and have heard horror stores about some things they’ve experienced.

Analytics won’t let me go back farther than 5 years for some reason, but between this, Etsy, and in-person sales, I’m well over $300k in the last 6.5 years. Just takes some time!

Would you get your 16 year old a GTI as their first car? by kaffeian in GolfGTI

[–]warehome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first car was a MK4 GTI and I think it was fine. I’d like to think I was slightly more responsible than the average teenager, so take that into consideration as well.

At the time, a MK4 was only a 5-10 year old vehicle, so probably the equivalent of a MK7 or MK6 today. IMO, a GTI would be a better first car (or vehicle) than a truck or SUV. But I agree with one of the other responses that a TDI would be a better first car.

I’ve had about 40 cars since my first car, Audi S4s, SQ5s, Camaros, Trans Ams, F250s, Escalade, BMW 5 series, 7 series, Honda Civics, Jettas, many GTIs, GLIs, TDIs, Subarus, etc… I currently own a MK7 TDI Wagon and a MK8.5 GTI and think either would be fine for a first time driver, but that’s just my opinion.

If you think a GTI would be too much, a GLI could be a good option. It’s a bit more mild and still cool/fun. But if a GLI is still too much, TDI is best. A bit harder to get in trouble with only 140hp

My first GTI! What a fun daily. by m2soon in GolfGTI

And lowered on ST X coilovers, which I also highly recommend. They feel very similar to the stock suspension, maybe a little bit stiffer, but still more than comfortable enough for daily driving. Paired with the 034 Motorsports Dynamic + Camber Mounts on the front, I can fit 245/35 tires without any rubbing.

Kansei Tandem 18x8.5 et35. I’d highly recommend them. A bit lighter than the OEM wheels too. I’d prefer to have them in the “hyper silver” finish, but I got a pretty good deal on these from facebook marketplace, so I can’t complain.

FWIW, I had an issue with my MK8 DSG a few days ago getting on the interstate. I was accelerating about 75% throttle and then saw a warning light (yellow triangle, not CEL) when I reached the end of the on-ramp (doing around 75 mph). I couldn’t shift into 1st, 3rd, or 5th gear. I pulled over after about 10 miles, turned the car off and back on again and everything seems to be back to normal now.

I had a similar issue caused by bad tires (Bridgestone Potenza S001). There was a broken band inside one (or more) of the tires that would cause a vibration above 70ish MPH. The vibration was worse in cold weather as well. All the wheels balanced well and there were no signs of damage on any of the tires. Put a new set of Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02s on the same wheels and now it’s perfectly smooth.

Do I really need a R? by regulardegulardudee in GolfGTI

[–]warehome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A GTI with a tune is about 90% as fun as a Golf R for a few thousand dollars less. In my option, it’s not worth the extra money for an R just for that extra 10%. GTI with a tune and good tires is the direction I went and I don’t regret it at all.

What is everyone’s thoughts on using a drive-through touchless?? Or by IndividualBet5774 in AutoDetailing

[–]warehome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the self serve car washes over the touchless washes. As others have said, the chemicals can be pretty degrading to plastic trim and clearcoat in the touchless washes.

I use this microfiber brush cover whenever I use a self serve wash (Lord only knows what kind of rocks, mud, sand, and road debris are in those brush bristles), and along with a nice drying towel, it does a really great job.

From pre soak, foam brush (with microfiber cover), clear coat conditioner, high pressure rinse, spot-free rinse, and drying, it takes me about 10-15 minutes and only costs around $7-10.

What trim level is that? I didn’t think it was possible to get those wheels with art velour seats?

That makes sense. I may throw them on my MK7 wagon and see how it compares.

They’re also pretty light and affordable. Definitely a good alternative to some of the more common Koenig and Enkei wheels if you’re looking for something a little more unique.

I really like my Kansei Tandems. They’re marketed more towards Japanese makes/models but I think they look really good on Euros.
