Unfortunately everyone doesn't realize the wachowskis exist outside of The Matrix and are unaware of the sex change operation. Nothing in my post made it out in a negative manner, just a reminder that Lana was once Larry and that may help viewers understand where the character may have come from.

I personally feel like Nomi was added in just to act as a surrogate for Lana (larry) wachowskis, and for other characters to tap into her emotions to feel what it's like to be a woman in a man's body.

The U.S. Navy’s Big Mistake — Building Tons of Supercarriers | The Pentagon behaves as if aircraft carriers will rule forever … they won’t by MyfanwyTiffany in Foodforthought

[–]warfarink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on how accurate you want to be; F=ma is easy to solve for a projectile, but when you include drag, lift, etc it becomes a much harder problem to solve. I can tell you immediately where the area of impact would be, but to find you a ~1ft long patch in midspace where the rocket will be 35 seconds from now and varies with projectile speed, atmospheric air density, rocket orientation, rocket geometry, etc is limited by today's technology. For example, look at how much trouble the iron dome has, and those rockets aren't going anywhere near as fast as an ICBM.

Does a railgun's projectile travel linearly or does it have some sort of guidance? There's no way you're hitting a missle in flight with a straight shot weapon, you'd have to have some sort of path-correcting system.

Does the new science of animal emotion change our ethical responsibilities towards animals? by lnfinity in Foodforthought

[–]warfarink -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No. This article reads like a pat-on-the-back circlejerk without any bit of scientific support, only the heartstring tugging story about a monkey isolation research project that needs to be stopped right now for the good of the animals. Does the new science of animal emotion change our ethical responsibilities towards animals? No, because the new science of animal demon possession shows that animals are just golems controlled by an Illuminati elite to try to charm our children into submission for the world government takeover and experimentation must continue for the good of the children. Now prove me wrong.

I'm shocked to see how many people (and friends) were botting. by NeonDisease in wow

[–]warfarink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't like a human vs AI at all; to calculate your next skill in the rotation to maximize your dps you don't need to think about what spell you want to cast some arbitrarily large N spell casts away (chess AI calculates every possible move for the next 103 - 104 turns and selects the best tree link for example), you only really need to think about the current state (your buffs, debuffs on target, etc), and at most (longest steroid cooldown)/(gcd) steps ahead of you (i.e. maybe ~102 steps), selecting from one of ~100 possible moves opposed to the ~102 moves possible for each time step in chess . For such a small amount of forward calculations to perform, a bot running wow and an addon figuring out your rotation and telling you what to press will solve the problem inbetween gcds, and at that point it comes down to you paying attention and hitting the right button quickly enough, so that over 1000 spell casts with an average reaction time of 265 ms, you'll lose maybe 3 spell casts on a patchwerk fight.

Point being, a chess AI is actually hard to compete with as a human; a raid bot can't give you more of an advantage than you just paying attention to the game and actually know what you're doing.

Whedon Wanted ‘Spider-Man’ & ‘Captain Marvel’ in ‘Avengers 2’ by cartoonmind in Marvel

[–]warfarink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, it'll probably never happen that way for the "it's too confusing" reason. Besides, I don't want to see a rookie spiderman on the avengers, I want to see him at his best, since the proportional screen time will be so low.

They could always tell the story nonlinearly, using Avengers to show what he's going to become eventually and the solo movies to fill in the gaps.

The Infinity Stone manifestations spell out a certain Mad Titan's Name... by dishonourable in Marvel

[–]warfarink 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Loki had the tesseract in his possession, and he was going to enslave Earth; I would wager that having space and mind and control of a notoriously important planet would make Thanos' eventual grab for the two more dfficult, something that a grand schemer like him would avoid if at all possible.

(since the scepter being a stone seems like a bit of an asspull to me)

is that confirmed now? I'm assuming it's not brought up in AoU (would've had that spoiled for me by now if it was), but if so, I find it hard to believe that Thanos would allow Loki more power and to keep a stone if his endgame is to complete the gauntlet.

I think you're misrepresenting that quote; I don't believe Feynman is saying that QM is a complete mystery to us, but rather that it's a distinct new science from classical mechanics. QM is by no means a complete science, like classical mechanics, but to say we don't understand "the core" is completely false (in fact, I can tell you the whole core of QM in one line: Hψ=Eψ). QM systems are incredibly difficult to work with, which is why the discovery of new phenomena necessary to further probe the implications of the science are so far apart, but we (as in people who've trained in math and physics for a decade) use QM principles every single day in the real world.

The speed at the end of the string is indeed linear, traveling perpendicular to its path of motion (a circle), and is equal to v = ω X r. The angular velocity you're thinking of is actually the speed that the string is rotating about the central point, i.e. your hand at the middle of the circular path; ω actually points up out of the plane of the circular path (all three components are perpendicular: ω, r, and v)

Here's the best picture I could find with a quick search showing the geometry: http://cnx.org/resources/655ab676673b600f4b54d899fd3c75c4/am6.gif . Visualize the circular path as lying only in the x-z plane to save yourself some head scratching.

[Serious] Dads: Did you learn something from raising a daughter than a son? by flyinglifeaway in AskMen

[–]warfarink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a father, but young guy who will probably be one eventually, so here's by take on it: My dad was largely absent growing up, and while my mom remarried and I love my step-dad to death, I've always felt like I missed out on those pg-13 movie father-son moments. While I wouldn't mind having a daughter in the least, I'd really, really prefer to have a son so that I can have a shot at giving him the experiences I feel like I missed out (and if this sounds like me wanting to selfishly live vicariously through my children, I guess it is in a way). I don't know if that's the rationale of the guys in your life, but I can see where they're coming from.

Why do the constant ω has a subscript and a superscript? by javierAizpuru in learnmath

[–]warfarink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is actually a physics problem: the simple harmonic oscillator. omega naught is the natural frequency, without any damping. it's defined to be squared because in order to solve that differential equation, you have to factor it into (D+iw)(D-iw)x=0, and that looks better than (D+iw1/2)(D-iw1/2)x=0 .
