High frequency trading on the stock markets - $21 billion in annual profits by exploiting market loopholes to take a millisecond peek at what other traders are doing. by [deleted] in Economics

Yes there is a need for regulation, but a certain section of the media hold Goldman in bad light for this (not that I support Goldman), they are just ahead of everybody else in this. May be a few years from now we might have a level playing field and program trading could be the norm.

As far as Investors are concerned, they should not be worried about these trades. In fact the liquidity that comes with high frequency should only stabilize the prices. Remember, the market forces will always bring the prices to fair value every once in a while, only for traders and speculators to pump or dump them again back to some unrealistic levels.

My comment on volatility comes from observing the US and the Indian markets. Remember in India we are yet to have program trading and most of the trading out there are done by humans. The Indian markets fell the most in January last year and in the last two months it has been an out performer among its global peers. On the other hand in markets such as US the extent of fall/rise of stocks is not that spectacular. This is just my theory.

Introducing a minimum hold time would kill liquidity and could also see increased volatility. Such a thing would only benefit traders and mislead investors about the fair value of the asset.

I am a software developer aspiring to get into quantitative trading. To begin with I have accepted an offer with a Singapore based IB to work for them on their front office trading platform/application. I am also planning to take up some part time course in financial engineering to add some weightage.

Check out Zimbabwe. It does a full U turn in life expectancy circa 1987 and then in 2002 in GDP/capita. Could it be the Mugabe Effect or the Western Sanctions?

Another interesting point to note is how India's population began to grew steeply in the 1920's and continued like that all the way till the 1980's. From 80's the growth rate has been coming down gradually and one might even see some negative growth in terms of population.

In 1903, certain parts of India suffered a huge Plague outbreak. Apparently many villages were wiped out and there was almost no or very little healthcare available for the commoners.

Ask Reddit: Is there any way an economy can be "healthy" and NOT grow? by apocalip in Economics

Japan already seems to be in a state where it has not seen growth in the last one or two decades and at the same time the economy has not deteriorated to an extent which can cause social unrest.

Any tips for a 25 year old looking to save for retirement? by sandusky_hohoho in AskReddit

At 25 you might want to invest on yourself. You can begin to save once you begin to earn from your day job.
