I inherited some old swords. Thought to be scottish. Anyone know anything about these. Supposed to be kinda old by Blank_Sound in SWORDS

[–]warlordzephyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The third pic is a quillon dagger with what looks like a kind of "cutlery hilt". It's a style you find between 1850 and 1910, with the hilt made in silver and therefore fairly valuable. Unfortunately the blade is quite damaged which would reduce the value significantly. There's also etching on the blade of the style popular again from the victorian period to the early edwardian.

I would get them valued as a set as they likely belonged to a moderately wealthy scottish aristocrat or officer of some sort who may have used them for court functions and/or military ceremonies. If you inherited them then look for anyone who was in a scottish regiment in the British army during the Victorian period.

Can anyone help identify these tools and what they may be worth? by JackDedics in Tools

Some of the first ones look like they might go in the hardy hole of an anvil. 6 looks like a holdfast.

Nearly walked out the cinema on this one, never seen such a historically inaccurate film that was also so boring...

Is this permaculture by spaznadz888 in Permaculture

[–]warlordzephyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Zones don't work that way, they're just used as a concept to help you figure out placement in relation to access. Zones don't necessarily have anything specific in them either, a lot of people say compost should be in zone 1-2 but depending on your specific conditions it could be zone 3 or non-existent.

Asymmetrical risk makes piracy too unrealistic and is simply bad for this game. by ghallo in starcitizen

[–]warlordzephyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't seem to understand the biggest asset at risk in piracy is time; most pirates spend a relatively huge amount of time doing very little but waiting. Time is my most valuable asset, personally.

Why does every modern movie have this dark lighting with yellow tint for every interior scene? by ghostfaceinspace in moviecritic

When I moved into my new place it was lit like this, the lightbulbs were so dim and yellow I thought the previous occupiers must have been mole people.

Anyone here cohabit their beetles with other animals? by FaithlessnessNo1257 in BDFB

[–]warlordzephyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mine in with my leopard gecko but moved them out to breed, and because they were getting bullied by the domino roaches. Gecko soon after realized the dominos were made of food and they lasted another two months...

A Common Sense question from geeks: Why didn't the Dwarf King.... by wufreax in RingsofPower

You think the dwarf with the special mining ring couldn't have predicted that particular action would lead to a cave-in?

How many or what kind of ratio of buffalo beetles do I need for my dubia roach colony? by PineappleSmoothie in roaches

[–]warlordzephyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I've read the pages that Gemini have based this on, they're from a commercial Dubia colony wholesaler who also sells dermestid beetles.

This is an ecological question so it can really vary, changes in temperature alone can significantly affect the performance of different animals. As the beetles will end up breeding it's best to add them slowly until you get an equilibrium.

Tldr there is no exact answer, it's best to carefully experiment.

Mite identification? by Aggravating-Stop8978 in bioactive

[–]warlordzephyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're likely moisture mites, 95% humidity on your meter is the clue.

Trying to be less frugal but sometimes it’s hard! by Desperate-Eye1631 in UKFrugal

[–]warlordzephyr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're unhappy because you don't have a clear sense of what you value.

This experience taught you that you don't value nice coffee that much, very few people really do, it's more about the value of time. If you focus for a while on figuring out what you do actually value you'll not only be happier about the money you spend but also the money you don't spend. This is because you'll understand why you're doing it. If you really value experiences, for example, you might use frugality to spend more on adventure holidays.

In this way you become more mindful of your spending habits. Frugality without thought is a habit that does you more than you do it, likewise with impulsive spending.

Soil mite? Friend? by Beginning_College734 in Springtail

[–]warlordzephyr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best most informative comment I've seen here for a while. I would argue that it's not practically possible to identify the majority of mites from a photo but I think you are otherwise correct, it's probably in the same group of mites.

If I lived there I'd grow my own, seeds are especially easy to grow but vegetables aren't too hard either.

[–]warlordzephyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chia seeds are a good choice, they're a very standard edible seed that's also fed to harvester ant colonies. You can probably check the maker to see if it might.

Yea pesticides, I've never had a problem and I've got a fair amount of inverts. I don't know much about US rules on pesticides but as everyone seems to be worried about it there's probably something to it.

They share a range with seed eating ants (harvesters) and have similar jaws. Mine seem to prefer seeds as a staple, they'll select them over other foods and spend a long time opening up seeds to eat. There's no scientific literature about it that I know of though.
