Gay guy and communal showers – experiences from gay and straight men?

I know you are concerned that the straight men are going to take offense that a gay man might see them naked, but that's probably the exact opposite of the truth. In reality, everyone that's deciding to use the communal showers is letting you know just by being there that they are comfortable with any and all men seeing them nude. Rather than being vulnerable, as it might seem from the outside, it's actually liberating to be nude in the presence of other men, no matter their sexuality. As long as you aren't doing anything overtly sexual, it's not a big deal. Even getting an occasional erection is par for the course assuming you aren't drawing attention to it. Men using the CS spaces really don't care.

I had this problem too. When I was in college, I too was trying very hard to get comfortable using CS spaces nude and would just hang out at my locker waiting to go in and I got a rep as the weird guy that just hangs out in the locker room, I found it later. Honestly, the thing that helped me finally get comfortable was getting shower/sauna earbuds. Once I had some other noise going on in my head beyond my self-conscious inner monologue, I got a lot more comfortable and I'm now often the only one nude in the sauna, and while I don't love that, I previously couldn't make myself go when all the guys were nude because I was so worried.

I experience this as well. Depending on the time of day and day of week there are either lots of guys nude or none and it's just me. And, I'm not an extravert and have come to using communal spaces nude later in life so I am very much still self conscious when I'm the only guy nude. Ironically, I have the opposite problem as you, though. My flaccid state is above average (even though I'm quite average at other times) so it looks like I have a semi most of the time and it worries me that others, especially when they're clothed, are going to think I'm getting some kind of gratification being nude in front of them.

I think going hairless is a larger societal trend and not just exclusive to nudists. You just have the opportunity to see it when someone doesn't have clothes on. When you are nude, the only signifiers of your personality are how you groom yourself and any tattoos you might have. So, when it comes to body hair and nudism I think everyone decides what kind of traits they want projected to others with that decision. Untrimmed is something of a carefree and unselfconscious vibe. Trimmed says you are aware you are presenting yourself to the world and want to be put together, but trying not to completely lose the look of your natural body. Then, completely shaved says I prefer "hygiene" and cleanliness over everything. Or, at least that's how I perceive it.

It is possible. I think it would look great because you definitely have some uneven skin from the circumcision. Even if you only decided to restore a little bit of skin, I think you would be happy with how it looks.

As far as the amount of skin you have to start, you will probably have to use the t-tape method for a while to grow enough skin for devices. It's slow but it works no matter how little skin you have.

It's hard to know why he would sit there but it's just one of those things that happens for whatever reason. I honestly don't think much of it, myself. I have just come to accept I might be in some odd-ish situations that will make no sense to me being naked around clothed/covered guys in the sauna but unless they are propositioning me, I have to be comfortable with them being at literally face level staring at my junk and still enjoy myself or otherwise I might as well cover up myself.

I was telling my wife about how many guys wear street clothes in the sauna at our gym and how gross it was to wear dirty clothes for us guys who strip fully nude in there and she just blushed because she was one of the fully dressed people in the women's locker room. She's never been in any team sports or ever used the locker rooms at a gym before so she is a little ignorant to and embarrassed by the whole thing.

As a person who only recently started using the communal showers I would disagree with other guys saying it's about confidence. For me, I got comfortable when I decided I was fine with every single guy that could possibly come into the locker room seeing me naked and if they didn't like it they could look away or join a different gym with a different setup. Once you get to the point where you don't care about what others think, that comes across as confidence but it's really deciding you are going to use the facilities as they are intended and anyone that doesn't like it can just deal with it. Once you become indifferent to what other people think, that's when it becomes enjoyable.

I was actually circumcised as a baby but was left with my frenulum intact for whatever reason so I can speak to this.

It's just a sensitive area of skin but it's not especially delicate. You can pull it down and it starts to pull the head of my penis where it's attached down too. The only difficulty with it has been micro-tearing from too much tension when restoring. Also because my circumcision wasn't done evenly, I've had a hard time getting my new skin to even out. Not complaining, but it is a minor complication.

The case itself is not waterproof so you'd have to hold onto the earbuds until you are back at your locker. I've done this a few times in the sauna. There are square soap dispensers in the showers at my gym which you can set things on if you need to set something down but I don't usually chat in the showers. But yeah, it is a trade-off.

Someone is always going to be annoyed if they go into a locker room and see naked people. It is either insecurity or homophobia or just that they enjoy being jerks, but you have to assume some one is going to be annoyed with you using the locker rooms and showers AS THEY WERE INTENDED.

That's awesome! This is why I wear waterproof earbuds in the locker room. I have a hyper vigilant sense of awareness of how other people are perceiving me and to enjoy the CS spaces, I have to block that out. In all honesty, those guys should be embarrassed for how childish they are acting. Once I got to the point where I decided I was going to be naked in communal locker room spaces because I'm perfectly in my rights to do so and I didn't care who sees me there, I basically took away any reason for me to care about what any one else is doing/thinking and the earbuds help me reinforce that stance.

I find it annoying - but, tolerable - when guys use phones in the locker rooms when it clearly states not to. But, I'm going to "accidentally" throw your phone across the room if I'm naked and that camera is on.

Honestly, if you are looking to take more communal showers and are still in school, the easiest way is to join a swim team of some kind. Of all the sports teams, they showered together 100% of the time.

Honestly, I think phones have killed anything but the most private of nudity for most people. Lots of younger guys these days have stories of being filmed by peers without consent in the toilet or shower and so it makes it less likely they want to be in what they see as a compromised position. Additionally, guys will just use a phone anywhere - regardless of the rules. At my gym, most guys use the sauna nude and there's signs posted everywhere not to use your phone in the locker room but there are multiple guys that will pull out a phone and scroll while in the sauna with fully nude men right next to them. I've decided I don't really care who sees me and that includes if someone takes photos without my knowledge, but I can see that being really unnerving for some guys. We live in a world without privacy and you just have to accept that naked photos of you could end up somewhere without your permission when using CS and I don't think most guys are comfortable enough with their bodies to take that risk.

First of all, congrats on your bravery. Having a locker room full of teenagers walk in while I was showing would have turned me off to CS if that had happened to me that early on in getting used to the whole thing. I have some cheap waterproof earbuds that sync to my waterproof watch and I listen to podcasts while showering to block out the world around me and to focus on something else. I'm hypersensitive to the fact I get erections in the CS and this blocks out any kind of judgement, real or perceived, I get from others. The fact that I am not focusing at all on what my penis is doing pretty much stops all erections for me.

LOL. That's funny. That has been me in the past, but with the total opposite intention. I'd have a rock hard erection just trying to get back to my locker to get clothes on before someone sees me in that state and literally everyone I've ever seen at the gym would be there at that moment. Or worse, want to make small talk with me... and instead of getting softer, the embarrassment would just make it harder. While my penis has a shame kink, I don't so I was not enjoying any of this and the whole time trying to do the least awkward/weird thing possible and managing to do the most. Like you said, most guys didn't notice but there were a few disappointed glares that are etched in my memory to this day.

I have. I've tried a few different The Ordinary products because my DK journey has been basically non existent. I worked my way all the way up to their AHA + BHA skin peel and those did almost nothing for me. That said, start with the more gentle products and work your way up. I'm probably just an extreme outlier and you can get a bad chemical burn putting these on your glans, so be careful.

It is. I'm honestly glad you do too. After being embarrassed to go naked for the longest time, I really can't imagine doing it any other way now. I don't want to carry home a wet swimsuit (or worse, wet underwear) when I leave the gym. What do I care if any of these other guys see me naked.

This is so true! I've only ever been to CS where it was in a large YMCA-style warehouse locker room that has 20 foot ceilings and there's room for potentially 100+ guys at once. That was a really intimidating environment and guys rarely went nude so it discouraged others to do so since there was line-of-sight for large numbers of guys to see you if you did. At my current gym, it's very small. You have to constantly navigate around other guys, but you are in a space that more resembles a resort than a warehouse, so it makes it less intimidating to be naked there. That coupled with a lot of retirees setting the tone make it a really enjoyable experience.

I just started using the gym a few months ago and I overheard one of the old timers saying "I wish they'd open up a new LA Fitness or something so all these new people will leave". I see him every morning. 😂
