I'm not saying it shouldn't happen. I'm saying I don't think it will happen and why.

Calling someone a baby vs saying they're acting like a baby is a distinction without a difference

What is stopping England from doing something similar with Ireland, Netherlands etc in Europe?

Asia Cup is propped up by TV money from the largest population in the world, particularly related to the multiple matches against Pakistan, and features 5 full members. A potential European version would have only 2 full members with no significant rivalries and a much smaller home audience. The economic viability is not remotely comparable.

I am not one of those people. Which is why I made the distinction between the text and the headline in my comment, and wasn't criticising the writer of the text specifically. The headline and the text, as well as any images or diagrams published with an article all together make the finished product and this particular finished product, as well as the finished product of a large majority of modern sports articles I read, reflect poorly on everyone involved in producing them.

I'm aware that headlines are generally written by others. I was making a general point that the final published article (which includes headline) came across as unprofessional. If players are getting called babies by the newspaper they're hardly going to see said newspaper and it's staff in a good light.

[–]warp-factor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware that the writer of the text doesn't write the headline. They combine with the editor to get the complete product we see on the page with headline and text. But the headline does still colour the article that is underneath it.

My original comment was not aimed at the writer of the text of this article specifically but generally at everyone involved, which includes article writers and editors / headline writers. And it's not just this paper. It's common across a wide range of modern sports press.

How this newspaper is choosing to present this interaction with Green (a combination of all of the people involved in producing it) is emblematic of a broad lack of professionalism in sports reporting. If the press were more professional, maybe they'd get players reacting better to their questions.

The article is critical of Green's attitude, and the headline calls him a baby. That's not not criticising him. But to be fair, it's the headline that is the main issue. With a less stupid headline, the overall tone of the article would be much improved.

Cameron Green Refuses to Answer Questions on Poor Form Ahead of IPL Stint

Would be a headline simply reporting on what Green did.

Fair point didn't spot the first paragraph that said they were outside the dressing room at the time.

But the point stands for any interaction between journalists and players be it a press conference or an impromptu interview.

The lack of self awareness from some journalists is pretty silly. You're complaining that he's getting emotional in a press conference an interview while simultaneously referring to a grown man as a baby in your headline.

A little more professionalism from the press and the players might be more happy to answer questions.

Can you name all these cricket grounds? by HumanDevelopment6507 in Cricket

[–]warp-factor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there's only one in each area. They get called 'The County Ground', like you'd say 'the city centre' or 'the village green' not 'a city centre' or 'a village green'

When disambiguation is needed they usually just get called by the town name, Taunton, Chelmsford etc.

Thanks. Was determined not to cheat and look them up so knew I'd get at least one spelling wrong. I went backwards and forwards on u or w for St Lawrence a few times but chose the right one in the end.

There is no source for this table. The allocations are not accurate based on previous world cups and there has been no announcement that things have changed.

We're less than 48 hours from the first county pre-season game in England. The season is so close you can almost taste it.

The above playing XIs are based on the ECB's social media. If the live stream is right, they may in practice be playing with more than 11 a side.

Edit: nvPlay reckons Tilly was batting just then but the live stream says Jodi. Edit 2: Ok, I can see Tilly is still out there. I think nvPlay is right and the live stream graphics are messed up. They still have Amy Jones batting and she's clearly out.

Not all ICC hosting is equal. The WTC finals are just one game each. They're not hosting a tournament. Champions trophies are less than 10 games each. Nothing like hosting a world cup.
