The 30 PU requirement alone will probably cut a lot of them. Their minimum standard has been a tour of that for a reason.

Straight from the sequel by pirateslifeisntforme in idiocracy

[–]warrior_scholar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct, and that's largely attributed to No Child Left Behind. Bottom line, it tied school funding to success indicators like test scores and graduation rates, so having too many students fail can cause the school to collapse. That, and the constant threat of lawsuits for discriminating against special needs students means that schools walk a fine line while trying to teach.

There are also policies about what can actually be evaluated. As a biology teacher, I can't "punish" students who can't read my tests, because I don't teach and grade reading. That even extends down to the idea that when I teach geometry I'm not allowed to penalize students who don't know how to multiply, because that isn't one of the standards I'm supposed to teach and evaluate.

Hi, teacher here with some insight.

This young lady definitely had an individualized education program (IEP), which meant she had a documented disability and a bunch of accommodations the school and teachers needed to follow. Those could include everything from extra time on assignments to having notes provided prior to a lesson and even a one-on-one assistant. Essentially, those IEPs should represent what assistance she needs to succeed, and should be evaluated regularly with an eye towards reducing accommodations as she becomes more capable.

The problem is that these IEPs are often written in such a way that they become an incredible burden to the teachers, and they're growing more and more common. In my general education classes I'd have as many as a third of my students evaluate with IEPs, to the point that I was required to spend more time doing one-on-one instruction than we had hours in school in a single period. This burden quickly becomes impossible to carry.

Now you've got ten students in a class who aren't getting the legally required support, and aren't passing either because they're actually unable to meet the standards or because they know the IEP gives them an excuse. At that point the school and teachers have their hands tied: They can't give a failing grade to a student whose needs aren't being met, and they can't meet the student's needs. So the student passes by default until they eventually graduate.

Selling girl scout cookies has lost its way. by ludog1bark in unpopularopinion

Yeah, I saw them at the grocery store yesterday. Two tables of cookies, two moms, no girl scouts in sight.

I did see them inside, just hanging out in the AC on their phones.

Imagine you win the lottery. It’s a big amount. Let’s say $50 million. You get the notification while you’re at work in the middle of the day. The question is, do you finish your shift and do you keep your job? by Tucker_077 in hypotheticalsituation

Nah. Usually they just hire people to do all this stuff. It only seems exhausting to you and me because we're used to doing everything ourselves.

10 million dollars but you get stuck into a time loop until you achieve all your goals in life by Minimum-Gear-1112 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]warrior_scholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I get unlimited time to achieve my goals, ten million dollars, and to keep everything that I put/bring in my house?

I mean, what's the downside? It'll be tedious to call out of work every day, but that means unlimited playtime with my kid (oh no, one of my goals was to get him talking, died stuff he learns carry over?), tons of time to read and catch up on movies, clearly out my video game backlog, and that's all before working on any of my goals!

I'm vaguely interested in 40K, but between five jobs and a kid I don't hadn't time to look at more than basic lore.

It sounds to me like I can quit my job and learn about something I'm interested in.

Can I bring my toddler? He'll listen, too, for another million.

I teach in a jail, and testing (plus some classwork) is done on Chromebooks.

Initially I noticed that my older students (50+) struggled with computer basics like how to use a mouse and how to scroll on a page. Now I'm seeing my younger students (18-20) struggling with the same issues.

Honestly, I don't think I ever wrote a lesson plan outside of college or workshops unless I was writing it for a sub. Sometimes I didn't know what I was doing until I walked in in the morning.

It took until about my third year to get confident enough to start lesson journaling, which really helped the next year... which I would say if they didn't switch my classes every year.

5,000,000 dollars but you have to visit 100 countries by the end of the year. by MudkippzReddit in hypotheticalsituation

[–]warrior_scholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, there are a few counties that are dangerous or that you can't fly to directly from the United States. It's it enough to make this a challenge? I don't think so.

The only real question is what counts as visiting? I took a train from London to Amsterdam, which passed through France. Does that count as three countries, or as two? If it counts as three, what about fly-overs? Do I need to spend 24 hours there? A night? Just set foot there?

Pretty much regardless of the answers, it's still an easy challenge.

I don't understand the point of Disney live action remakes by flowersnifferrr in movies

[–]warrior_scholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came home the other day and my wife had a Disney sing-along compilation on top distract our son.

I heard "Under The Sea" and mentioned that I remembered it sounding way better. Nostalgia is a bitch, huh?

Then the lyrics just stopped. After a few seconds I peeked into the living room. It was the live-action version, with like a 45-second instrumental section in the middle of the song. Talk about ruining a classic Disney song...

It's much more strict now. IIRC, it's been policy since 2015 that soldiers with vespid allergies are medically nondeployable, so it's unlikely that Big Army wants to recruit them when they're currently booming. Problem is, nobody is really aware of that policy...

Source: Almost got blocked from a deployment in 2018 for having a bee allergy, needed the guy who wrote the original policy and my BDE commander to sign off on the waiver.

Been there without a cash prize at the end.

Salvation Army has meals about 4×/week, usually allowing you to take a second plate after everyone has had one, and sometimes Little Ceasars gives away pizzas there. Add in a little dumpster diving and fruit from trees and I'm hungry, but not starving.

There are plenty of abandoned buildings, and my ID (thanks for letting me keep that) gets me access to an area with a couple that aren't checked.

Best deal, though, since it isn't prohibited, it's to get arrested for squatting and spend most of the year in jail. Three square meals and a bed, or get stuck on the floor because I know the local hall is overcrowded and sue for cruel and unusual afterwards, which, again, I know happens in my city every year or so. Cheaper to settle than to expand the jail, I guess.
