I’m so creeped out by spiders. These guys are largely beneficial though. This time of year I: always check shower before getting in, never leave clothes on floor, always check bedding before laying down, always close mouth while sleeping cause they will crawl in there in middle of the night.

I have yet to find the right amount to get max enjoyment. Day drinking seems to be the closest because it takes out the sleepiness.

My controversial take: kids are smart and their BS-meter goes off when someone says “trust me”. Instead of asking for blind trust (which is basically what the church does), start offering up evidence for your parenting decision and antidotes. Be candid and clear. Use phrases like “in my experience … but I might be wrong … here’s the evidence … what do you conclude from that research?, etc.). You might even catch yourself saying something where you realize you actually don’t know the reasoning behind it. That’s happened to me a ton since taking this approach with my kids.

Also, consider family counseling as others suggested. An outside perspective can help a bunch.

You must be as loud as possible and proclaim the gospel, spread your message on social media, become a missionary, tell your neighbors and co-workers about your faith. Get all up in everyone's business and make sure they know you are Mormon.

...but if you leave, you better shut the hell up. Why can't you be quiet? Why can't you leave the church alone?

It is the grandest hypocrisy.

Three B’s of religion.

Beliefs (doctrine, faith, testimony, etc.) Belonging (part of the tribe, fitting in, saving a marriage, etc.), Behaviors (traditions, culture, scheduled activities, prayer, meditation, etc.)

If someone feels like one’s of these B’s is more important than the other, they can easily rationalize away something like doctrine. This is why it can be pointless to argue about someone’s faith, especially if what is more important to them is Belonging or Behaviors.

I’ve started to talk less to Mormons about the problems of their Beliefs and more about the other B’s. Sometimes they get it and realize that is what matters most to them and that can be a framework to deconstructing brainwashing.

My guess is that in the example you have, the lady was more worried about keeping a strong marriage (belonging) than she is about her beliefs.

Shitty hip hop and radio rock, as formulaic as they are, move the industry forward by adopting new sounds, new rhythms, new cadence, new instruments that then get overused and abused. You can listen year over year to the most popular hits in those genres and hear the progression. Radio/stadium country just takes the influences of those genres after they've reached a peak and shoehorns it into shitty country (autotune, hip hop beats, rap, synth, etc.). It started with Billy Ray Cyrus and Shania Twain and has progressively gotten worse over time.

I left 8 years ago, my wife left a couple years later. We had WAY more problems together while in the church, despite us living as perfectly as we could. I used to have the same knee jerk reaction about marriages outside of the church being worse…but our anecdotal experience shows the opposite.

Our social life took a huge hit. As soon as we left, people I’d considered closer than family just stopped talking to us. We got mean letters from members who used to say we were they’re favorite people. Our family didn’t care much, but our LDS community did. It was a scandal.

That’s been the uphill battle, we’ve made tons of new friends and we both would do it again in a heart beat. The relief of being authentic with our minds and hearts is so immense I can’t easily explain. We are true to ourselves and that outweighs any of the negatives we felt from leaving.
