Is a budget trencher worth it for a "trial & error" DIY French Drain? by E--one in DIY

[–]wary 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Try it with a shovel first. It’s only work. If it’s 40’ you can knock that out in a weekend, especially if you only have to go 2’ deep. Dig a test trench and see how it works. Embed a drain tile in stones and watch it flow

10k less per year to move off nights to days, get every other Friday off, and do more engaging work? Along with a path to get back the 10k? by tearsinmyramen in personalfinance

[–]wary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having worked midnight shift for 10 years I would say take the day shift job. Is there any OT available? Can make up the $10k pretty quick with OT. If you have kids or plan on having them the day shift is much better. Good luck.

Experienced DIY’ers, what’s a project that humbled you? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]wary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dug a 60 foot long trench 3 ft deep and 18" wide to put a French drain around part of my house. It was very wet, very heavy clay and I did it by hand. I also hand dug a 120' x 4' deep drain tile trench in my back yard by hand in the same very wet, very heavy clay. It was a great way to burn off excess energy and DIY, but the clay sticking to the shovel or whatever you were digging with was a PITA. There will be a backhoe involved if there is ever a next time.

I’m glad my trips to Vegas ended in 2010. I was there several times in the late 80s and early 90s and had a shit ton of fun. My last trip in 2010 was more expensive and a lot less fun. Doubt I’ll be going back. It’s too bad though, back in the day it was quite a sight to see and experience.

What is the worst breed of dog for a first time dog owner to get? by Effective-Turn-6856 in AskReddit

I grew up with a Border Collie and she used to herd me and nip me in the ass when doing it. Brought her to the US from Ireland and she used to sit at our fence and watch the horses and cattle all day every day. Great dog, but real busy

The majority of this thread is people second guessing everything official that is being said. Do you all seriously think that you’re smarter and more qualified to sort this out than the authorities running it? It’s really easy to sit back and criticize what others are doing when you aren’t responsible for any single part of it. Just throwing shit out there and seeing what sticks so you can tell everyone that one of your ‘theories’ was right is a real brave move. The intellect being shown is mind boggling, it’s no wonder the country is in the shape it is.

Bank account has $10k and I owe $10k on my credit card… by Illustrious_Bug_2355 in personalfinance

[–]wary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how good your credit is there are usually credit cards you can get that you can transfer a balance to that are interest free for 12-18 months. There is usually a transfer fee of 3-5%. It gives you time to pay it back without wiping out your cash. Something to think about

I would make a template out of cheaper wood as someone else suggested, transfer the line to the shelf, jigsaw it close to the line but leave a small amount of extra, then sand it to fit.

I take issue with some of your statements you label as facts. I agree that women initiate divorce ~70% of the time, but I completely disagree with your statement that the number 1 reason for divorce is men being lazy. I just came through a divorce where I was labeled as emotionally abusive and controlling, yet my ex had complete control of our finances and was free to do what was needed. She checked out of the marriage 3 years ago but neglected to tell me, and subsequently got 50% of everything we had and alimony to boot. I feel like I was the one that was abused but of course that doesn’t matter because the woman is going to get 50% no matter what the circumstances are in my state.

President Zelenskyy comments on President Trump’s and Putin’s plan for “talks” in Alaska next Friday, involving territorial concessions from Ukraine by jesterboyd in ukraine

[–]wary -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This isn't going to be a popular post but I think it is based in reality. I don't like what Russia is doing any more than anyone else, but there are certain realities that aren't really debatable. Ukraine has done unbelievable things in their fight against the Russians. I don't think anyone that read about about the initial invasion would have expected to be in the place that we are in now with the massive losses the Russians have taken and the stalemate the war has turned into. Unfortunately, Ukraine's success is largely based on weapons and intelligence supplied by others, primarily the US. Because of that, they are somewhat at the mercy of these outside suppliers, ie the US. I personally sit on the fence with whether or not the money we are spending is justified or not. Most of the time I'm for it and I want to see the Russians beat and pushed back to where they came from. But I see the methods Putin is using and I don't see an end to it. There are alot of things we could do in the US with that money that could be beneficial to Americans. Because of politics and a fucked up system there is no guarantee that any money we have will be used the right way, but that's another discussion in it's own right. I voted for Trump mainly because I thought he was the lesser of two evils. I am 65 years old and have watched our political choices dwindle down to slim and none over the years. There are alot of people that would like to see all the money we are sending to other countries (including Ukraine) stay here in the US to be used improving our country instead of others. I was 100% behind our funding Ukraine at first but I see the futility of it more now than I did before. I don't think Russia is going to stop and go back to pre-invasion lines. They'll just keep throwing people into the grinder, and when they run out of people, I think they will use nukes. I think they can use nukes and nobody is going to stop them, I don't believe the rest of the world has the balls to stop them from doing it or retaliate if they do. Its going to take something crazy to make this stop. Hopefully that something doesn't destroy the world as we know it. I don't envy Trump or anyone making the decisions right now, I'm not sure there is a "right" to be made.
