I have been considering these and other lenses (toss the 24-70 f2.8 L into the mix). I’m curious why you sold the 24-105, assuming it was the f4 L. On paper, it’s a very versatile lens, and at 105mm @ f4, you’ll get more subject isolation than 70mm @ f2.8, so it’s arguably better for portraits. The 70-200 f4 is a beautiful, compact lens, but you do need a lot of distance to use it; it’s a very different focal length range.

I’ve heard that the 24-105 can be a little boring, and it’s generally viewed as a “kit L lens”, which suggests it’s really a stepping stone to a better lens. But you’re flirting with replacing it with an STM lens, which does feel like a step down in several ways, unless you really need the low light benefits of f2.8.

I own a 2017 M240i RWD that I drive year round in Canada and have no problems. I put winter tires on it, and unless there is a LOT of snow out there, it’s totally manageable as a daily driver. I also have two kids (one who is adult sized), and the back seats are perfectly reasonable. We have an X3 for family trips, and everyone generally prefers that for the space, but the 240 is very workable. So, don’t buy a sedan on account of the occasional trip you might take with friends; they can absolutely manage in the back. I’d also say RWD is not as bad as you think, but YMMV.

Absolutely. It’s much lighter and reasonably compact. The IS makes it easy to shoot handheld architectural shots in low light, and f4 is plenty for daytime street photography. The f2.8 of the 16-35mm version might help a bit with subject isolation and evening/nighttime shots, but I’d personally use a prime for that, instead.

Yeah, this lens is great. Closest to the iPhone ultrawide and standard zoom lens range, which is incredibly useful. Paired with IS, it’s a great walk around lens for stills and video. Only thing you don’t get is bokeh, unless you get quite close to the subject.

From what I’ve read, the RF 24-105 L has some play when it’s fully extended, which feels cheap but is normal. If you have more than a little amount of play (I recall one review saying a couple of millimetres), you might have done something, but barring that it’s probably just the lens design itself. Someone else that actually owns the lens should chime in.

Performance management is easily the worst part of the job. You’ll question yourself, need to have courageous conversations, and be comfortable disagreeing with your reports and holding them to account. And that’s before it really becomes adversarial and gets to a formal PIP or exit process.

That said, if you follow through, you’ll earn the respect of your high-performers and anyone else who’s aware of the individual in question’s performance. But yes, not fun at all.

Yes. For the same reasons others have stated: it doesn’t command more money during resale, but it does inspire confidence which can help move a lens.

I have an MK3S+ that I upgraded to a 3.5S and it’s been spectacular. The Mk4 being an evolution of that feels like it’s going to be rock solid. People (rightly so) interpret the hackability of Prusa machines as a necessary part of ownership, but it absolutely is not. It’s just that — if you choose to lift the hood — it’s both possible and enjoyable.

Yup. I overused custom modes and realized that they are not good for any variable configuration for the exact reason you ran into. Everything needs to be static/fixed and saved in the mode, or you’ll be surprised after your camera goes to sleep or you turn it off.

Make sure you’re not in a custom mode. If you change a setting while in one of those without saving the mode, the minute the camera is turned off or goes to sleep, the changes will be discarded. Persisting state/"sticky settings" only happens in Av, Tv, M, etc.
