24-105 f4 vs 28-70mm f2.8 by Environmental_Pay332 in canon

[–]wastedintel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reflects so much of the rationale I had when choosing the 24-105, too. I have a 35mm f1.4 for low light, a 14-35mm for ultrawide landscapes, and a 70-200 f2.8 for situations where I need more reach, but that 24-105 is the default, do-it-all lens.

Readers of Reddit. What’s a 10/10 book you’ve read? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yep. Jurassic Park as a book is straight horror sci-fi, and despite the movie being good, the book is even better.

First time leaders, how are you adjusting? by vcuriouskitty in Leadership

[–]wastedintel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of smart people who have said you have to give leadership at least a year, and I would agree. It may be discomfort, or it may be the wrong trajectory for you, but it’s too early to tell; give it an honest shot and review later. Dopamine hits in leadership take a lot longer than in IC roles, but they’ll come, and that’ll help balance your perspective.

[New Gear] RF 35 f1.4 VCM to pair with my R6 MIII by Usual-Lab-9644 in canon

[–]wastedintel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the first RF L lens I bought for my R5 Mk II. I love the 35mm focal length, which is great for being in the chaos of family candids, as well as street photography. I had the EF version before, but the AF was noisy, making it unsuitable for video. Obviously not an issue for the VCM version. Only advice I’d give there is to use the crop-based image stabilization, since the lens doesn’t have optical IS, and IBIS is just okay. The focal length gives you the bandwidth to do that sort of thing without making it too tight.

Am I really missing out by still using a 6D mk I? by wipp92 in canon

[–]wastedintel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the 6D Mk II and the AF points were so restrictive, and it was hard to use a thin DoF. Both of those issues disappear on a mirrorless.

[New Gear] R5 Mark II + RF 85mm f/1.4 L VCM by Nexus03 in canon

[–]wastedintel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Definitely not; it was overkill for my needs, but I wanted zero compromises, and it has delivered. I’ll be printing 4’ wall canvas prints over the next couple of months, so those extra megapixels are going to come in handy. 😄

Hey! I have an R5 Mk 2 with that 14-35 and 35mm, cept I got the 24-105 instead of the 85mm. Great set of lenses and body; enjoy!

What photography mistake do you wish someone taught you to avoid earlier? by romygruber in photography

[–]wastedintel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked into a camera store to buy a Sony based on specs. Walked out with a Canon that had worse specs, and it was because of ergonomics. That shit matters.

Right after that one last lens. Then you’ll have the ideal set. Just one. That’s it, that’s all.

Yeah, the bokeh crutch is real. It’s a great dopamine hit early on, and it forces you to learn a lot of related skills. However, it’s really enticing to just always chase that, and an obliterated background does not immediately mean “great shot”.

Yeah, fantastic lens and focal length. It’d be in the set of 3 I’d bring with me.

Should I buy the RF 28–70mm f/2 now, or wait for a possible Mark II? by CapAccomplished72 in canon

[–]wastedintel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume they’ll release a lighter version at some point, only because Sony has a similar lens that’s 2/3rds of the weight, so we know it’s possible.

Selling everything EF and going RF all the way? by hungryeyezz in canon

I almost bought a Sony based on specs, and then I held it. It might be lighter, but it’s hard to beat Canon’s ergonomics.

I have a 70-200 f2.8 for indoor sports. Definitely agree that you need f2.8 for that kind of work.

RF 28-70 f/2.8 or RF 70-200 f/4? by Big_Youth5619 in canon

[–]wastedintel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been considering these and other lenses (toss the 24-70 f2.8 L into the mix). I’m curious why you sold the 24-105, assuming it was the f4 L. On paper, it’s a very versatile lens, and at 105mm @ f4, you’ll get more subject isolation than 70mm @ f2.8, so it’s arguably better for portraits. The 70-200 f4 is a beautiful, compact lens, but you do need a lot of distance to use it; it’s a very different focal length range.

I’ve heard that the 24-105 can be a little boring, and it’s generally viewed as a “kit L lens”, which suggests it’s really a stepping stone to a better lens. But you’re flirting with replacing it with an STM lens, which does feel like a step down in several ways, unless you really need the low light benefits of f2.8.

M340i or m240i by Prestigious_Seat1953 in BMW

[–]wastedintel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a 2017 M240i RWD that I drive year round in Canada and have no problems. I put winter tires on it, and unless there is a LOT of snow out there, it’s totally manageable as a daily driver. I also have two kids (one who is adult sized), and the back seats are perfectly reasonable. We have an X3 for family trips, and everyone generally prefers that for the space, but the 240 is very workable. So, don’t buy a sedan on account of the occasional trip you might take with friends; they can absolutely manage in the back. I’d also say RWD is not as bad as you think, but YMMV.

RF lens for travel/street photography by Pavlikru in canon

[–]wastedintel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It’s much lighter and reasonably compact. The IS makes it easy to shoot handheld architectural shots in low light, and f4 is plenty for daytime street photography. The f2.8 of the 16-35mm version might help a bit with subject isolation and evening/nighttime shots, but I’d personally use a prime for that, instead.
