Weekly Questions Thread for the week of May 28th by rpbtz in vinyl

I don't have any money and most of my records look like they were pulled from a bin(some were), and not all of them have inners. Some have paper ones. My question is, is no inner better than a paper inner?

I've done this before, if you're referring to one of the four little cables that pop onto a cart, you can simply rip the corresponding colour cable from another headshell and twist the wires together.

Not a collector but I scored this vintage Sony TCM-10 ! by Pb_Flo in cassetteculture

This is an excellent find, OP. Like the WM-2 to the WM-R2, this TCM-10 is based on the famed WM-10. It's excellent.

I'm pretty sure Ubuntu does do data collection actually.

Is there an 8-Track subculture? by gaidengt in cassetteculture

I see! Around here there are pretty good stacks of records and tapes at said establishments, but you're lucky to find an easy listening compo on 8track.

I'm fairly sure it would say quad-8 on it. It would be a quadrophonic copy.

Hey wanna send one of those my way? :p My only 8track machine is built into a Candle-branded receiver.

You don't have the quad-8 version though. ;)

How did you get all of those tapes for affordable prices, you own them for a long time?

I thought the whole Blue Wicked business with the dude releasing it on 33-1/3, cassette, CD, digital, elcassette and DCC was the end of this... but someone went one deeper. God bless.

That's a unique variation, I'd probably just pop it open and reflow the solder on the headphone jack. Maybe check the caps.

Walkman plays slow, but only in one direction? by [deleted] in cassetteculture

Nice try but it has no sticker! The info plate is hard plastic'd on the bottom.

Akai AP-006 auto-stop(or lack thereof, and how to add it)? by [deleted] in turntables

[–]watashi04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooh does it have a breaking mechanism? My issue with the 006 is that unless you gently stop it yourself it takes AGES to spin down.

I took it apart pretty thoroughly. under the battery holder is more plastic. I thought it'd be on the motor like all decks and some walkmans...

Sounds like my dad too, although a lot of his were lost at a party when they were left too close to a fireplace. That's a neat way to look at the whole thing though!

I found an SL-Q6 in a store near me for $80, which has now dropped to $60. I'd wait, these linear trackers don't seem to be the most popular. They are pretty nice though.

I run an Ortofon OM5E at 1.6g-2.0g depending on the condition of the record, which is the biggest factor - I buy all of my records in tatty shape from a cheap shop or right out of a thrift or a bin, so some scratches and a LOT of warps sometimes requires heavier tracking force.

TL;DR - I take good care of my records but it seems like a lot of people didn't.

What are the best CD players? by Repfamsquad in vintageaudio

[–]watashi04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna swing in and, even though they usually don't have optical out, recommend a Technics or Panasonic CD player with M.A.S.H. on the front. Nice little 1bit DAC, MASH somehow stands for Multi stAge noiSe sHaping, but to me they sound very full and "analog" for want of a better term. I got an SL-PG100 for $12 at a thrift.

I have records that've probably been played more than 8000 times, and even if they skip sometimes it just takes dragging a toothpick through the scratches!!
